My problems with this country
    #2124593 - 11/20/03 10:22 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Okay if it weren't for the problems Im about to address I would be willing to die in an instant for this country. First off how the fuck can marijuana be illegal?? At least make it legal for all cancer patients, I've seen people close to me go through chemo and they were sick and unable to eat, if they could have smoked a giant fatty perhaps they would have been able to eat thereby helping them get through it better. ALso the Idea of property tax makes me soooooooooo fucking angry. Its ridiculous my mom pays about 8,000 dollars a year in property tax and my dad pays about 50,000 grand a year in property tax. You cannot truely own land because even after you buy it they tax the hell out of it. And even thought its "your" land if you dont pay the taxes you'll lose the land. GOD FREAKING DAMNIT this country can go fuck itself. Man I could understand paying property tax once but once a year. COme on. My dad has millions of dollars so its not a big deal for him, but It makes me so angry to think that my mom who barely makes 30,000 a year has to pay 8,000 dollars of that in property taxes. Yeah I know that you are thinking she should probably move out of her house to someplace cheaper-but why should my mom who owns the house (no mortgage she got it in the divorce) have to give it up because she has to pay tax dollars she really can't afford to pay. I lived in that house for 15 years, ever since it was built (not right now cuz of school) and the thought that my mother might have to give it up because some fucking asshole said well if you own land you have to line my pockets because Im a greedy fucking asshole who is going to misappropriate your tax dollars. Some of the things we have spent money on for this country are A-ok with me but when my familys money goes to stupid fucking things like affirmative action it makes me angry. Sorry for the long post just needed to vent.

I agree. You cannot truly own land if you are being charged for it on a yearly basis. I own my shoes, but there is a 1 time tax for buying them. I own my place but a bunch of fat greedy politicos can arbitrarily decide to charge more for taxes at their whim. We are never really land owners, just glorified serfs.

I'd like to be able to check out a book with out it ending up in a "database"

and while we're at it I would like it if my Liberian wasn't under a "gag" order...

hum... so you mean...

as long as the moon shall rise
as long as the rivers flow
as long as the sun shall shine and the grass will grow
let me listen I will learn to speak the old language
yes I yearn to bathe in blue skies and fall apart from the world of machines, regain my feet and my pounding heart
no do not be fooled we don't need these things
don't be slaves to hardtack, sugar or the coffee or the bacon fat
won't give our hearts away not for that not today
won't trade my pony for the iron rail
no freeway stack for the game trail
spring strong sweet tall green grass grow - buffalo!
I will take my brush from the warpaint, my foot from the warpath
when you understand it is sadness that drives the wrath
trust no more the forked tongues of the great chiefs in Washington
I see blue skies bleeding - colors screaming
some invisible thing is the enemy now and if I knew it's name
I would call it out loud come out and come clean
won't trade my pony for the iron rail
bare-back fresh track down the game trail
spring strong sweet tall green grass free wide run wild river flow

clear sky moonrise long ride home
buffalo!
buffalo!
buffalo!

I often ask myself this, pretty much anytime I see someone smoking:

How can pot be illegal when cigarettes are legal?

unfortunately - it's something we have to deal with. really. we don't have these rules b/c 1 person made them up - it was a group of people who felt the same way about a certain thing - it was a group effort of people. Of course you're not going to like everything about this government, but you gotta deal with it. Thank god we aren't ruled by a King and what he says goes and we have absolutely NO say in it. Atleast here we have the tiniest amount of say... it could mean nothing but we atleast have it.

well Im pissed because my dad has literally millions of dollars whereas my mother doesnt. She really struggles to pay for it whereas its obviously no problem for my dad. It basically makes it impossible for lower income people to afford decent places. My definition of decent however may be slightly skewed since I come from a wealthy family though.

just a moot point, but most ppl don't realize that in the US you never technically own land, you just own the rights to use of a determined space (usage rights, mineral rights, etc.)

that makes sense tho cuz wed eventually run out of land cuz the kids would just inherit it if they didnt get taxed the house could sit there for 50+ years without anyone going near there..

There isn't some filthy rich dude out there spending all that property tax cash, it's the income of the city or town you live in. It pays for all the roads and overpasses and streetlights and parks and workers and everything else that it takes to run a city. Property tax rates are set by the value of each piece of property so everyone is pretty much paying their fair share. There aren't too many first world cities that don't have property taxes, it's not just the States. The logic behind it is that anyone who owns property in a city must help pay the expenses associated with running one. BTW, I pay $1300 Cdn/yr on my house and lot and I think that's pretty reasonable.
