15 million children die of starvation every year and I'm burning in ecstasy
    #15018867 -

  •     In the Asian, African and Latin American countries, well over 500 million people are living in what the World Bank has called "absolute poverty"

  •     Every year 15 million children die of hunger

  •     For the price of one missile, a school full of hungry children could eat lunch every day for 5 years

  •     Throughout the 1990's more than 100 million children will die from illness and starvation. Those 100 million deaths could be prevented for the price of ten Stealth bombers, or what the world spends on its military in two days!

  •     The World Health Organization estimates that one-third of the world is well-fed, one-third is under-fed one-third is starving- Since you've entered this site at least 200 people have died of starvation. Over 4 million will die this year.

  •     One in twelve people worldwide is malnourished, including 160 million children under the age of 5. United Nations Food and Agriculture

  •     The Indian subcontinent has nearly half the world's hungry people. Africa and the rest of Asia together have approximately 40%, and the remaining hungry people are found in Latin America and other parts of the world. Hunger in Global Economy

  •     Nearly one in four people, 1.3 billion - a majority of humanity - live on less than $1 per day, while the world's 358 billionaires have assets exceeding the combined annual incomes of countries with 45 percent of the world's people. UNICEF

  •     3 billion people in the world today struggle to survive on US$2/day.

  •     In 1994 the Urban Institute in Washington DC estimated that one out of 6 elderly people in the U.S. has an inadequate diet.

  •     In the U.S. hunger and race are related. In 1991 46% of African-American children were chronically hungry, and 40% of Latino children were chronically hungry compared to 16% of white children.

  •     The infant mortality rate is closely linked to inadequate nutrition among pregnant women. The U.S. ranks 23rd among industrial nations in infant mortality. African-American infants die at nearly twice the rate of white infants.

  •     One out of every eight children under the age of twelve in the U.S. goes to bed hungry every night.

  •     Half of all children under five years of age in South Asia and one third of those in sub-Saharan Africa are malnourished.

  •     In 1997 alone, the lives of at least 300,000 young children were saved by vitamin A supplementation programmes in developing countries.

  •     Malnutrition is implicated in more than half of all child deaths worldwide - a proportion unmatched by any infectious disease since the Black Death

  •     About 183 million children weigh less than they should for their age

  •     To satisfy the world's sanitation and food requirements would cost only US$13 billion- what the people of the United States and the European Union spend on perfume each year.

  •     The assets of the world's three richest men are more than the combined GNP of all the least developed countries on the planet.

  •     Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger

  •     It is estimated that some 800 million people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition, about 100 times as many as those who actually die from it each year.

My biggest problem today is maybe putting in some new globes and finding an earth/ground issue on my aging car. Maybe I'll eat a delicious Indian Tikka Masala... if I want, or maybe I'll drink some green tea and try and lose weight. And I'm in the 'lower' middle class of Australia! And in my abdomen and sometimes around the back of my head I feel this awesome love/ecstasy which I've found exists when you realise all your thoughts are false.

I'm more or less in heaven.

And every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger.

15 million will go this year, all children...

wtf

Nature is going on.  Without minimizing the suffering you see here, in nature it's perfectly natural. Where I grew up in Michigan in very cold winters when there wasn't enough browse for the dear they starved in droves.  The ones that managed to survive set the stage for a repeat at some time in the future.

For every human who feels that life is bliss millions feel suffering and I'm not talking physical but mental.

What's going on?  I can't tell you ultimately but if Veritas is correct then what is going on is what "can" go on.  This may go on as long as the earth exists and if there is life elsewhere for what we would call an eternity.

Here's what I might suggest for someone in your position. Be very grateful and enjoy to the max.

Oh and pray that reincarnation is a myth because the odds are not in your favor for a repeat anytime soon.

The price of forming a committee(s), to conduct these studies and produce these numbers, could have been gone to feeding hungry people in our own countries and abroad.

My opinion on charity.  I don't care if you don't support donating or not, you life, your choice.  But if you do support giving away your excess, I suggist the following:

The list of people you should give to and in what order:
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Neighborhood
  • City
  • County
  • State/Providence
  • Country (nation wide charity)
  • Neighboring countries
  • What ever is left

The more you help those closest to you, the more you receive to help those further down the list.  Besides can you really find peace in the fact that some kid you saw on T.V. got whatever donation you surrendered when there is probably some human down the street, a few blocks away, or just a city away dies in a developed country?  Literary, you could have seen them a few years ago and stood 5 feet from him, yet you will never even been within earshot of whoever your sending the money to.

And to answer your question O.P.; business as usual.

Yeah, I think about that shit a lot too.  Its an accident of birth and some good luck that I got a good smile, financial stability, and a backyard full of cactus that's always ripe for the nibbling.  Resources aren't equally distributed and we benefit from that inequality.  I lay the blame on Jesus, the scumbag.

Every year 15 million children die of hunger etc..

This is only in proportion to the people we have alive today.  Just 200 years ago, if 15 million children died, it would be a HUGE deal.  Just nature IMHO

Not quite,
Billions are donated every year to undeveloped and developing countries by so called rich countries, and the citizens within.
Most of it ends up stolen and sold. Somalia is a great example of that, the army steals the food for the soldiers.
Also, go visit these countries that accept western donations and see what happens when a boatload of clothes arrives at the charity distribution center. In 1 or 2 days, go to the central market and see hawkers and vendors selling much of the donated clothing.

It is human nature that is the bitch indeed.

All according to plan.  Those with the access to resources consume and successfully reproduce, those without access, tend to die.  Just like flies jockeying for a prominent position on a pile of shit.

Compare those billions of dollars to the amount of money thats circulating the globe for each individuals use and for gifts for people close to that person. I didn't say the list ends at friends or family. I only said that most of the money we have goes to these two groups. It's how nature is. We will most likely only take care of ourselves and the people that are close to us and mean something to us.

No dispute on your reasoning of, and method of giving.

Just the nature business.

I'm not saying that it's a bad thing. It could be a wonderful thing, if the worlds money supply and resources were evenly distributed. Society and human nature has the potential to create equality or at least abolish poverty and it's not going to happen IMO. It's been that way between 10 to 20 thousand years or however long society exists and any huge change would have to entail the collapse of our societal pyramid. The bottom of the societal pyramid is getting bigger much faster than the top and the bottom is the part that is suffering the most. Unfortunately I can do nothing about it, except for being depressed or ignoring the sad reality. It was the same when we were still a part of nature, but there was a lot less people suffering and the suffering probably didn't have such extremes as we do now.

How can we get that number from 15 million up to 24 million?

You probably won't live to see it and neither will I. I'm willing to bet you 1,000,000,000$ that it will eventually happen though.
