My wife will redeem my life insurance policies, pay off the house, buy a Mercedes convertible and have a string of meaningless affairs in an attempt to divert her attention away from the pain of missing me.
Oh, and I won't have to do any more shit around the house.
-------------------- To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.' Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence. Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains. Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

How can one fraud be superior to another? In ability to scam people?
John: I am getting a name with a "K", anybody?
Sucker: Well my daughter's name was Cathy.
John: I feel that her death had something to do with the head or chest region.
Sucker: Yes, she died from a punctured lung in a car accident.
John: You were very fond of her. I can see her smiling face.
Sucker: Oh, yes! She was such a happy teenager.
John: Blah, blah, blah...ad nauseum.

I think it may have been Tim Leary who talked about the power of the human mind. You know when your really tripping out and time seems to almost stand still. Well you get 12 sec of brain activity after your body dies, maybe that 12 secs will last forever. Maybe I'm already dead and I'm just living in that last 12 sec of brain activity. Maybe my life is just the memory of my life. I also like the "Waking Life" idea of dream after death. Nice. I have read somewhere that there is some evidence to support the idea that consiousness can exist outside of the body when there is no brain activity. This is getting long winded now but I'd say that whatever happens after we die it will be all good! I certainly don't think there is anything for anyone to be worried about or scared of.
"Why not?" -Tim Leary, last words.

waking life was fuckin cool
The idea you discussed: "maybe that 12 secs will last forever" was also mentioned in that movie

How can anyone quantify this? I imagine that you read this somewhere and believed it without question. The original author probably pulled the figure out of the air!
It is documented that the French carried out tests on guillotine victims. They would prepare the victim by asking them to blink when they heard their name after having their head chopped off. One victim continued responding to his name for two minutes.

My personal belief is that while you are alive you have an opportunity to experience something called "faith". This thing called faith can empower you to become a creator in the post-human experience.
I believe that when God created the vastness of the physical world it required faith to do so. Take the biblical example of creation for instance. "God said let there be light" , and then there was light. God had to believe that the words spoken would be fulfilled in order to create light. It required absolute faith. This is just an example of how it might work.
Humans have the opportunity to experience this kind of faith in an existence where we are isolated from the absolute certainty of a God. If there is a purpose to this existence I believe it is to provide us with an opportunity to become creators on a level with God.
To have faith is to find a creative purpose in this life. One that is not destructive in anyway. Those who walk around with no purpose are, for the most part, destructive and have no faith.
Purpose is not given to us, we must find it through faith. To find a purpose you must first believe that there is one.
I am still searching and have alot of realizing to do.

buddha's answer to queries about "what happens after death" was:
a noble silence... ~ ~ ~ brings to mind a master & disciple little dialog: zen student: master what happens to us after death? zen master: i do not know. student: but, you're a zen master! master: yes, but not a dead one! ~ ~ so... what happened to valentine michael smith (THE MAN FROM MARS!!!) after he was lynched by an angry mob of his enemies, and made into a kettle of soup by his friends ??? well: he comforted his grieving adopted father figure (jubal harshaw) & then reported for duty in the human portion of heaven, where he pushed back his halo so he could get back to work ... (or for a more ummmm nostalgic story by heinlein, try his short: "the man who traveled in elephants" --- it's worth the search & not a dry eye in the house...) ~ ~ or how about rumi's poem about changing each time "death" occurs: a crystal, a plant, an animal, a man --- "whan have i lost by dying?" ~ ~ brings to mind the old sufi saying: the man who dies before he dies, when he dies, he does not die (i'm sure it is more impressive-sounding in persian ...) ~ ~ or even long john silver: them as what dies is the lucky ones ...well... ok... ~ ~ or frank zappa (pbuh) quoting his favorite classical maestro, edgar varese: the present day composer refuses to die ~ ~ one must suppose that there is nothing to lose and perhaps much to gain by being as aware as possible when the moment of transition occurs --- brings to mind aldous huxley asking his wife laura to inject 2 ampoules of 100 gamma each lsd as he lay dying 22 nov 1963... attention here and now boys karuna ~ ~ ~ ~
