Oregon mushroom I.D. Request
    #1480199 - 04/21/03 09:57 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Alright, about a week ago I went hunting in my neighbors field in oregon. He has around 30-40 cows, and lots of mushrooms grow in his field. One species of mushroom in particular interested me, so I took a bunch of pictures, and have uploaded what I could.

I didn't keep any of the mushrooms I collected (around 35-40 of this species), but took several prints and kept them... just in case. I really am only interested in the species of this mushroom, and am wondering if anybody can help me I.D. it. Heres some information about them:

The species of mushroom was generally between 3 and 5 inches tall. The (generally) bell-shaped caps were between 1/2" and 1 1/4" in diameter, and brown/dark brown on top, fading to a lighter brown/staw at the bottom, lightening as it dries. The length of the stems averaged 3" long, 1/8" in diameter, were hollow, and were light brown/straw - darker when wet. The gills were a dark brown/olive brown. The spore print was black or dark grey.

I didn't think to look for a pelicle, but I never noticed it on the caps that broke. I noticed no distinctive odor, and no remnants of a veil. I couldn't see much bruising, other than a darkening of the mushrooms where I pinched them (probably due to the water being squeezed out).

Here are some pictures:

I found this group growing against the border of my neighbor's and my property.

Here are a couple more groups of these mushrooms.

This one I found in the middle of my neighbor's field somewhere. The picture came out great, so I had to include it.

This is a close up of the cap of one of the mushrooms I found. It also came out looking nice.

This is a picture of the gills of one of the mushrooms.

This is a picture of the prints of three mushrooms after sitting for about an hour.

These are all of the pictures I was allowed to upload withyin this 24 hour period. I have a lot more, but these are the best for I.D. purposes. Maybe I'll get around to uploading more in the following days. Maybe not.

Anybody think they know for sure what this is?

look like mabey Panaeolus papilionaceus or Panaeolus sphinctrinus. the prints seem to be black, which fits with Pans.

I assumed Pans because of the print, and am glad that I'm not the only one who thinks so. I didn't get any furhter with my assumptions, though.

I'd agree with Panaeolus papilionaceus.

After research of this species, I'd definately agree. Most pictures I find match perfectly in terms of shape, size, colr, etc. Sporeprint black, and remanants of veil alond the edge of the cap (forgot to mention that in first post), are all good solid evidence. That, and in the top picture, you can see the group growing directly next to a pile of cow poo, with a couple growing directly from it.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll have to ave some of these next time I find some (probably this weekend).

Hehe, suppose to be SAVE, not "ave".

Sorry about that

Not active? I was under the impression that they were. I haven't found a source saying otherwise. Mushroom Johns website lists it as active I believe. Anyway, I could very well be wrong.

good luck.

[edit: soem of my friends and i have a theory that everything in life can be refered back to either monty python or thew simpsons. in the case of your signature quote, it is, ofcourse, monty python and the holly grail.]

That's an interesting theory, and I'm inclined to agree. I find myself quoting monty python lines every day, and the same applies to the simpsons

I was just wondering how long it would take for someone to post about the quote. Of course, you are absolutely correct.

I think I'll avoid eating them, it doesn't seem worth it in the end, but thank you.

I only had the quote a couple days, I change them all the time. I changed it again, but this time, I am unsure of the accuracy of the quote, making it more difficult. Good job though. That's one of my favorite parts of that movie, one of many favorite parts.

The quote was (for everyone else):

"This is s'pose to be a happy occasion, so let's not bicker and argue about who killed who"

Damn you're good. I went ahead and deleted it, because I didn't figure it was accurate enough to be used, but when I came back, you had nailed it. I'll have to come up with something better.

The quote was:
"It's like a party in my mouth, and everybody's puking".
