I'm not sure what strain they are either but I am certain they are not p. semis' Caps are wayy to big for that.

Besides if you want a positive ID you need to name more than just the habitat they were found in, What was the spore print? etc..

That's pretty dried up but it resembles Panaeolus papilonaceus. Pan. Sphrinctinus and Pan. campanulatus are other possibilties. Not active.

p. CAMPANULATUS OR p. SPHINCTRINUS,

tHE p. PAPILIONACEUS IN sTAMETS BOOK IS ACTUALLY p. CAMPANULATUS.
tHERE ARE SEVERAL ERRORS IN ID IN pAUL'S BOOK, EVEN IN MY MUSHROOM WHICH HE SHOWS.

Yes, they are the "bell-shaped Panaeolus" or Panaeolus campanulatus group.

These were growing directly from the dung most likely. Remember that Ps. semilanceata will be growing in the surrounding grass, and does not usually fruit directly on the dung.

AND... The use of "strain" is not recommended... strain is basically is used to define a certian characteristic of a species.

Yes mj, i'm awared of the permanent confusion about this 3 species. I've read in some guides that there are macroscopical details that relates this pics to papilonaceus, one of them is the umbo.

Interesting Maia,

I have some old taXonomic descriptions of P. papilionaceus from Japan, China and in SOME IN English which tend to make it conspecific with Panaeolus subbalteatus becasue of the facrt they described the cap as flatening with age, someting common in P. subbalteatus and not in the campanulatus/sphinctrinus stage which always have trhe fringed teeth geared edges at the bottoms of the caps.

In Plants of the Gods by Schultes and Hofmman, they show the campanulatus and list it as sphinctrinus with fringed edges but the caps had no mipples on them as in the pictures I posted.
