Now, he is often protrayed as a scoundrel, but here is the real version.

He got taken in by a scam artist and was mighty pissed for leaving his family, home and job to follow some nutjob for years. Payback, muthuh fuckah!

Think I am being fascetious? If you saw a dude perform miracle after miracle, would you trade in a spot in heaven for a few thousand dollars?

From some of the stories I've heard a likely one seems to be that he was into a earthly revolutionary who would help the jewish people overthrow the yoke of the Romans. When he finally realized Jesus was talking about an emotional or psychological revolution he though that was totally lame and maybe even scary.

He didn't even keep the money, depending on which of the versions in the Bible you decide is "infallibly authored by god".  In one book he throws the money away in the temple, hangs himself somewhere, and the jews take the money and buy a field to bury paupers (Matt 27:5,6); in another, he bought the same field himself and then went and exploded in it, lol. (Acts 1:18)



The whole Judas=Sinner thing never made too much sense to me anyways:
  • I.  How exactly was Judas "betraying" Jesus/God?  He did exactly what Jesus wanted him to do- he was at the Last Supper when Jesus talked about how he was going to be killed as preordained and how he was willingly goin along with it.  Without Judas having told the Jews, the sins of humanity would never have been forgiven, as Jesus never would have been killed.

  • II.  Additionally, since Jesus is held to have lived a life without sin, yet knew Judas would tell the Jews as had been foretold and he confirmed at the Last Supper, how could Judas telling the Jews have been a sin?  Wouldn't Jesus's acquiescence and facilitation of this allegedly sinfull act have been a sin itself?  If so then Judas must not have sinned, because Jesus cannot have sinned since he lead a sin-free life.
