A Stepping Stone To Higher Consciousness
    #1399929 -

The pursuit of security and power always prohibits everyone from reaching higher states of consciousness... THe pursuit of security and power distorts one's view and creates a seperation from the person and the rest of the world... inflating the Ego.

One should use the ego as a TOOL for reaching higher consciousness. Use it to show you where the negative programming is, and then erase the negative, energy draining programs.
The thing about this is by giving up any desire for security or power, your mind becomes clearer, and it allows you to better access security and power in your life. If you aren't addicted to security or powe, the need for them doesn't exist, so it can't distort your views and drain your energy.
Just some info from a book called Guidebook to Higher Consciousness (with an orange cover).
Peace.

Are you referring to the "Handbook to Higher Consciousness" by Ken Keyes, Jr?

That is a wonderful book. His others are pretty good as well, but the Handbook is my favorite!

Yep, I believe that'd be the one.
Definitely a good-read for everyone on here.
Peace.

It IS a good read, but like most books of its ilk, Keyes starts with some base assumptions about "the way the universe works" without ever stating how these principles came to be known or verified except by the occasional meaningless anecdote.

For example: "You always get exactly what you want." (Not from this book, but I do not have it handy for reference yet Keyes uses similar hyperjumps.)

Actually, I find Keyes basic assumptions to be fairly straitforward and intuitive and nothing like the "you get whatever you want" types of philosophies in terms grounding assumptions, but that is just me. They are based on his own methods which he used to overcome many hardships including being paralyzed and I think they translate excellently into others lives.

Keyes basic point revolves around his idea of "addictions," which for Keyes are the separating notions that people have that insist that reality (or their life) needs to be some specific way in order for them to be happy. These addictions work alright when your kid gets good grades or you get a raise, but they are also always the source of unhappiness in any situation in which reality does not conform to your demands. In such situations, people often try to force circumstances to fit into their addictions (ie their notion of how reality ought to be), but this often only leads to more struggle and pain. Instead of trying this, Keyes suggests that one learns to give up or change (or at least examine) the addictions, which are what causes one to react to a set of circumstances with unhappiness. His method is not about giving up desires or enjoyment, but rather giving up the unhealthy and demanding stance towards these things.

I am not doing any justice to his work here, but I do highly recommend picking up one his books (especially the Handbook). It can be read again and again.

"You always get exactly what you want."

Does seem kind of dumb doesnt it?! I mean who wants to lose a leg or a loved one? I think it is a false conclusion to the idea that we are in control of how we react to a situation and the worst experiences we have can always teach us something if we look hard enough. I dont think we subconciously draw experiences to us therefore getting what we need. Could be wrong though.

I think the important thing here is that they do work. He doesn't say anything like "you always get exactly what you want". That isn't what he has to say. (I know you didn't take that quote from the book, but it is what is implied).
He simply says that basically all human suffering comes from the way our mind is programmed. It is a Hindu belief that addictions cause suffering, which is basicallly what he is saying. He gives you an effective guide for people to realize the root of the problems they encounter, and how to reprogram your mind to not be effected by them.
Like, if someone is making fun of you. This could cause you to worry about your image, what other people are thinking of you, why is he making fun of me, etc. You get all sorts of negative reactions. But the guy making fun of you isn't making you react the way you are. He probably is trying to make you react a certain way, but your reaction is your responsibility, you alone control it. Most people react to their environment automatically, like a computer program. He gives you, step by step, a process for putting control of your life in your own hands. It allows you to react to the environment in a postitive way. Hell, his book can lead you up to cosmic consciousness, if one really wanted to go that far. I myself wouldn't want to be a guru-type guy all the time, but cosmic consciosuness is something I would like to experience from time to time. (Satori enlightment, etc.)
Anyways, I still suggest it for everyone to read.
Peace.
