Altered consciousness. Tripping and meditation.
    #1042786 - 11/11/02 10:09 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

They way I would explain altered consciousness is when you transcend your senses and are taken to a place not explained by the five senses. You go to a place removed from how you experience the world normally. Once you experience life in different eyes, you gain a better understanding of yourself. (A stupid analogy is....if you only ever drive one car, you may tend to think all cars are like yours, and you may not understand people who don't see eye to eye with your opinion. Also, you never know what another car feels like, maybe the way your car breaks felt normal to you, acceptable even, but now that you have driven another car you see that most cars break so much better. Now that you have driven someone else's car you better understand your cars shortcomings and also your cars advantages...I hate analogies! Especially ones about cars and football.)  You can achieve this in a few ways, of which I have "successfully" tried lucid dreaming, tripping and meditation. Altered consciousness has allowed me a way of stepping outside my consciousness and from there I could see myself without opinion or bias...it is the most educational thing that can happen in my opinion.

Meditation changed me and continues to change me. It helps me understand myself, and then understand others and understand nature. That sort of total understanding brings a calm tolerance to your state of mind and changes you so naturally, that you almost don't notice. My new understanding/loving reactions to every situation in my life is so automatic. I don't attempt to be a better man, I am a better man (than before)...it is so natural. I am now very calm and collected and all my piers noticed the change when I first started this, a long while ago.

I definitely have bad days and I have frustrations and I get pissed off at stupid things...but its so different now. My bad days are so few, and the bad days are so less severe...nothing is ever that bad. Also, I just don't have anger like I use to. This is a good place to insert a relevant qoute by Ghandi; "I claim no perfection for myself. But I do claim to be a passionate seeker after Truth, which is but another name for God." I don't claim to have all the answers...just most of them

When you meditate you go to a place without emotion, without bias, in other words absolutely nothing to "color" your thoughts. In fact you go to a place without thoughts...and once you are there, you think. You simply see things the way that they are, starting with yourself. A way I explain mediation is...The mind is like a lake, the truth is like the moon and emotions are like wind. The wind blows, causing the lake's water to be disturbed so you cannot see the moon's reflection. The more the wind blows, the more disturbed the water is, and the worse the moon can be seen. However, if you stop the wind from blowing the moon's reflection becomes as clear as the moon itself...and isn't that nice?

That isn't to say that emotions are bad, not at all. However, it is to say that desire curves your natural way of thinking, what you might call "common sense". The more you hate someone, the more likely you are to do something foolish in a fit of rage, for example.

All the above is only my opinion.

Zazen Meditation, an introduction and instruction on how to do it.

indeed it is, and the best thing is that your analogy had absolutely NOTHING to do with cars or football!

How does one clear muddy water?
Through stillness.

And how does one become still?
By going with the flow.

I get "high" when listening to music....
I feel like I am on an opiate or have smoked myself calm on weed.

That was wonderfully enlightening. Very good metaphors. You have a good interpretation of life. I love the moon wind thing, it makes a lot of sense:) Continue thinking!!
