So somebody says / says somebody in the back.

Many people think what is important is who that somebody is, and who should speak with such "authority". Then in turn, in the following order the sentence would be laid bare as an authoritative one. The student may usher forth this dialectic on any subject. But that's only one way (or rather, a way of not) going about it.

What both an obstinate student and the Tao each indicate, is how the negation dwells in language as a binary, but in more than one way. There is no simple contradiction or negation here, or perhaps there is, and the tao is clogged. It depends on how you read into it.

The words come before the meaning is arrived. That is the way you can "follow" your Tao. Another translation is much more general than language: "The Tao that is trodden is not the true tao".

Authority is too intentional and contrived to be real; it comes before the words. The Tao can be interpreted as resentment for speaking and learning; such a reading is open. But another reading is that there is no real authority to call or point to, only a willingness to read into a situation and learn.
