Terence on DMT: An Entheological Analysis of McKenna’s Experiences in the Tryptamine Mirror

Terence on DMT: An Entheological Analysis of McKenna’s Experiences in the Tryptamine Mirror of the Self

I found this article very interesting. The Author, Martin Ball, is proposing that all psychedelic experiences are a mirror of the self, because all is One. You be the judge.

http://www.realitysandwich.com/terence_dmt

In the popular imagination, Terence McKenna is a name intimately tied to DMT (dimethyltryptamine), machine elves, aliens, and 2012.  Though now deceased, Terence's musings on DMT continue to influence explorers of altered states of consciousness and his writings and lectures have left an indelible mark on popular psychedelic culture.  Largely through the internet, Terence's accounts of his DMT experiences are easily accessible throughout the cyber realm, where he is largely presented as a heroic explorer and radical thinker, challenging us all to embrace a profoundly enlarged view of reality - namely as experienced through DMT.

Yet, are Terence and his wild accounts of DMT and the machine elves all that they are made out to be?  Is Terence a ground-breaking, reality-shattering explorer of the far realms of the psychedelic universe?  Is he a torch-bearer leading us to a grander vision of all that just might be?  Many seem to be convinced that the answer to these questions is an emphatic and undeniable "Yes!" despite the obvious reservations of more "rational" and "traditional" thinkers.  Indeed, it is often the radical ontological and epistemological shift implied in accepting Terence's accounts that attracts many "counter-cultural" thinkers and self-styled explorers of consciousness. McKenna's ideas are un-conformist, and it is his image as an outsider and free-thinker that makes him appealing to so many and why they are so eager to absorb his reflections on his arguably quite strange DMT experiences.

I find Terence's reflections on his DMT experiences to be valuable and insightful for a very different reason.  When analyzed from the perspective of what I call the "Entheological Paradigm," Terence's experiences do not present us with an intrepid explorer discovering new realms.  Rather, we are presented with a clear picture of an individual who is unable to recognize himself in the mirror of tryptamine consciousness.  In short, Terence's experiences boil down to one fundamental truth: They are the experiences of someone who is consuming very powerful entheogens, yet is failing to recognize the projections and creations of his own ego while in that state.  From the perspective of unitary consciousness, Terence appears to have never managed to transcend his ego and therefore appears to have failed to realize the genuinely true potential of the entheogenic medicines he ingested.

Yea, that's what I'm thinking.

So, you have some people who believe that the external is the self, and others believe the external is the external. But isn't ego how we interact with each other, so both of these ways of understanding these drug experiences can be equally useful. I feel like there needs to be awesome balance that could make it really fun and enjoyable, yea know? :awesome:

I'm :high: too, so that might have not made any sense

Reading now. I always noticed McKenna never spoke of Oneness, which disturbed me for someone as bright as he, and as stooped deeply in the tryptamines. One of the first times I did mushrooms I saw directly the energy field we're all a manifestation of. I got it straight away...

This guy is pretty harsh on McKenna btw

Terence McKenna didn't seem to care much about enlightenment. He was more concerned with society and culture, whether its galactic or terrestrial.

To say his DMT experiences are all projections of the ego is a bullshit thing to say.  Just because he wasn't awakened doesn't mean his experiences weren't valid as experiential evidence.  And also, even though he wasn't awakened, he was certainly knowledgeable when it comes to mystical shit.

Yea I think he is overly harsh too... I feel both of these worldviews are useful when interpreting these experiences.

Its gets tricky when one tries to say what is "out there" vs "inside," or a "projection of the ego" vs an "external entity".

My view is more holistic, yet very hard to convey in words.

Its really both, there is no "out there," everything happens inside you. However this doesn't deny the existence of other consciousnesses, machine elves included.

For example, even what you consider external physical reality exists inside of you and is highly symbolic of the themes that your soul is going through. Your closest friends will often act as mirrors for different aspects of yourself, reflecting back to you your own foibles as well as strengths so you can see them more clearly.

That is not to say that your friends are just there to serve you as symbols, because from their point of view you are a symbol of some portion of them. Nothing exists independently, what you see as a consciousness is one perspective of a holistic event co-created by many different other consciousnesses. To put it crudely, you would be the yin and the other minds would be the yang. Any experience is an interaction between different minds, who's boundaries define each other. And yes, at some level it is the same mind looking at itself.

So mckenna's DMT trips certainly would exist the way they do because of his own mind, but that does not mean these weren't conscious entities he was interacting with.

possibly. there are a bunch of possibilities, i suppose, as no one can say for sure what it is or is not. but during my experience i felt like i was no longer in my living room. it was strange.

I think this guy has a good idea but he clearly doesn't understand that which Terence was trying to do.

I don't think Terence ever said that what he saw was the ultimate reality and that if anyone had a different experience they were wrong. I like Terence a lot yet at the same time I do think this author has somewhat of a point. Terence did have a little bit of an ego and I think it carried through into his DMT trips, however I don't think that invalidates everything that he witnessed on DMT.

I mean if he let go of his ego and melted into divine union with anything and everything, then the author is right he probably would not have had such fantastical visions. But, ya know, those fantastical visions can be a lot of fun and stuff, and I think fun and enjoyment of life are some of the most important things.

Knowing the end all be all to the game of life is no fun. I think Terence knew this, and I think he delightfully danced around words to convey the idea that one should enjoy oneself and never take anything too seriously.

Terence himself laughs at what he says half the time, that's because it's fucking way far out. He knows it, but he cannot deny that that is his interpretation of his experience.

I think the author is really onto something, but I think he would have a better way of communicating it in a way that doesn't totally bash Terence. I haven't done DMT but everything i read about it makes it seem like the most confusing confounding thing there is.

Let the author tell us about DMT in his words, his experiences. Perhaps what is experienced on DMT is just a reflection of one's preconceptions. After all Terence does talk at length about how DMT and other tryptamines have an often times Celtic or Irish flair to them, which is clearly a reflection of his own upbringing and culture. I don't think Terence ever claimed that the divine reality was in fact Celtic and all other motifs were invalid lol.

Dude any one who's had a true dmt experience knows(me for instance). T just put it in his own different way. but i do agree with Toad. who put it so eloquently.

i believe a dmt experience is when it  allows the user to endure quantum things beyond human comprehension. Like very important times in your life.  IE being born ( the soul enters the body) when you sleep ( small dose allows the unconscious to explore a universe of possible times places things aspects depths and feelings think about it!) and :frown: DYING! which sucks.

my aunt died when i was like ten. very sick. my mom and uncles were there as she was taking her last breaths. when i got older about 20 she told me that when my aunt was dying that she slowly topped breathing. just slower and slower. but continued to be "entranced" as my mom described it. until she finally, while in a trance, and passed away.

she said she didn't focus really on anyone.

i really believe she was entranced by dmt.

DMT is astounding!! and so BIZZZZZARRRRRRRE and warm and happy and scary (at times)
everything our dreams are.

our unconscious mind needs just a little dose of dmt when we sleep at night and with that when can experience all those emotions and depths that is our dreams. (even tho i know it hasn't been scientifically backed yet)

dmt is like a reality packed in a molecule capable of taking us to places in our mind. in our past. to different peoples life. to

but now when i smoke it??I think its like bending the rules of nature and the way things are to happen in this universe. because normally your not supposed this stuff to experience this unless ( in theory) if your dying or being born!! hahaha

but of course darned ol human discovered how to do STB and now hes experiencing something quantum go figure.

dude.... when i smoke it .... "ITS" like "" YOU THINK THIS IS REALITY??!!!?!?!
OOHHH LEMME SHOW YOU WOW OW OAOAOSOWOWOAOS SPINNEY TWIRL WARMTH SCARED HAPPY LAUGHING. IM OK WOW

DMT is the shit

wheres the post to talk about dmt spirituality? i wanna rant with some fellow dmt crusaders
