Do shrooms have long term mental effects?

Does anyone here think shrooms have medicinal purposes for mental disorders? I've been depressed for like the last 4 years and I'm starting to finally feel like a new person, almost like I've been reborn. I dont seem to dwell on things as much and am not as anxious. I was just wondering if shrooms would help me see the world in a different light? I've always wanted to try them and I finally comfortable with my mental state. I know if I sit down and trip with a few close friends my inhibitions will be gone and i will really enjoy myself, but do these feelings stay? I plan on a level 2-3 trip for my first time. Can't wait till harvest! Peace!

yes i think they and the rest of the psychedelics do. this was my reason for going to school there is a psilocybin study in the treatment of OCD wrapping up at the university of arizona. the FDA has also approved other research protocols for LSD,MDMA, and ibogaine. check out the good folks over at MAPS if your considering this path i would advise reading as much info as possible, research then research some more. only you know if it`s right for you

it is true that there are some experiments to see what (if any) medicinal value any number of drugs have. however, to consider psychedelic mushrooms a medicine is a bit foolish. the problem is that the mechanisms by which said psychedelic works is only partially understood - as are most things dealing with the human brain/cns. but that's just technical.
if you feel comfortable and that you are ready to experience this wonderful substance than by all means go for it. i'd advise you to keep your dose low (1.5-2g dry cubensis) for your first few ventures. as far as long term mental effects, that is highly variable. personally, i find that in the few days to weeks after a trip i have a renewed positive outlook on life - so in that sense, it does have some after effects. i also have heard of a very very small percentage of people going through a psychotic break (usually on a larger dose of mushrooms or acid) and having trouble dealing with the aftereffects for quite some time. just know your mind, substance, and source, be prepared and begin with a positive mindset.

Everyone's favourite medical professor, Dr. Timothy Leary, experimented with shrooms to rehabilitate prisoners incarcerated in maximum-security penitentaries. The results were somewhat inconclusive, but if reduced to a Yes or No answer, it would be Yes, they were helpful.

Yes. as for what those long-term effects will be; that's up to you, yourself, and your other self.

go for it, but i suggest low dose, and a very safe setting. have some xanies on hand if you can. also, if your on meds, stop taking them for a week before the mushrooms. some people disagree with this, but you dont want them mixing with the mushies and doing weird shit inside of you i definitely wish you best of luck :-)

I'm taking a Kava Kava and Saint Johns Wort supplement right now. Would that be considered a Med? I saw another thread about St johns wort and Shrooms, do they mix? I dont know anyone that takes Xanax. Will alcohol help calm you down if things go wrong?

dont take the st. johns wort when you take the shrooms. the kava should be fine. alcohol will make a trip dull, but i dunno if you'll feel better. meditation or pot make a bad trip go good

Well I'm a stoner and I also meditate. So I should be able to control my mind and tell myself everything is ok? Do you have self control while tripping?

In reply to:

I find that I have self control, although I have been around people who seemed to loose their control. But these people had high stress and took a large dose.

you say you meditate so you should be fine just breath and follow your breath, doing this before the trip will clear your mind meditation is the best disipline for psychonauts, it makes your trips go better and also helps you integrate them into your daily life also as Terrance McKenna would say "if you lose your way smoke a bomber" i wish the best of psychedelic sucess to you

I think that smoking is worse for your mind in the long-term. When I was smoking 3 to 4 times a week I started going insane/depressed/anxiety in my mind, couldn't stop losing things, got the worst grades i've ever had, mom noticed that I was just being a lazy bum. A lot of people really do deteriorate with frequent smoking (burn-outs). I don't think shrooms will ever do that to me.
I'm trying to restrict my drug use now to trippin+drinkin
