Meditation questions

I have recently begun getting into meditation and so far it's been a great learning experience. But I had questions for the more advanced meditators.

What is the best way to sit? Everytime I sit Indian style my lower legs get numb and sleepy. Am I supposed to sit a certain way?

What about meditative music? Is this recommended for beginners or should I stick to silence? I'll admit though. The music always gives me that boost I need to find my emotions unless that's cheating...

If I meditate and I end it is it safe to do it again or do I have to wait till tomorrow? I usually try to meditate thirty minutes but if it's ok I would like to practice as much as I cab as safely as I can.

there's no right or wrong when it comes to spiritual practice.  there are definitely different paths and methods though.

if music helps you relax and "arrive" as it were, then that's fine, but you should be working toward meditating in silence.  maybe try a mantra?

it's totally normal for your legs to cramp up and go numb at first.  think about doing some leg stretches before you meditate and if you really want to meditate for long stretches you can sit in a chair.

I'm not greatly experienced but I finally started making it an almost daily habit (sometimes multiple times a day) when I discovered a comfortable seated position that kept my back erect. What I found worked best was sitting in a variation of siddhasana, with my butt right on the edge of a pillow folded in half. I keep the knee of the leg closest to me pressed against my perineum per hindu practice, but I have the other leg on the ground with the sole of that foot pressed against the shin of the other. I still can't get my back perfectly straight and after 15 minutes or so my back muscles get pretty tired from being in such an unusual position for so long. I just keep going at it, trying to extend the amount of time and the quality of my stance. Slowly everything is extended.

I find meditation in silence is most fruitful. I follow my breath and that's enough. It's beautiful in it's simplicity. I guess it really depends on what your reason for meditating is. I myself want to enter into meditate quietude, so I follow my breath and let my thoughts wind down until spontaneous thoughts are nonexistant.

If you have the desire, meditate as much as you want, but don't force yourself to do it or you'll tire of meditation and it'll quickly feel like more of a chore than a calm and joyful activity.

oh yeah good call on the suggestion for positioning.

OP if when you sit cross legged, your knees pop up higher than your hips, than you should most definitely have your bum elevated on some kind of cushion.

Do you know how to alleviate that? I hear hit and miss suggestions on stretches but nothing consistent.

this is an indication of tight inner hip muscles.  do your knees pop up when you sit in badda konasana (butterfly or goddess pose) too?

externally rotated poses like: warrior II, triangle pose, and extended side angle pose are good.  also hip openers like pigeon prep, malasana, and badda konasana of course.  it's one of those things that you just have to work on an a daily basis to see any progress.

Cool, first of llmeditation should be permanent until it is natural & effortless & you are in an absrobed state 24/7, like any practice that becomes part of you, it should be done as often & frequently as possible

Id say 5 minutes 6 times a day would benefit you more than 30 minutes of sitting down as you can sit for 30 minutes totally lost in your thought, but doing 5 minutes every now & then you become recentred then go about you daily business, while maintaining awareness

Id always recommend silence, but music can be very great, something you find invoking
Just be inwardly silent when listening to the music :wink:

When sitting make sure you are sat on your bum bones, not your legs, and keep your back straight

What is your goal?

Is there special things you can do for a different goals? Say my goal was to get rid of a phobia, is that possible trough a specific method? 

Btw, today I was focusing on the breath, after my conscious mind became quiet, a lot of dreams/mental movies/pictures came up, after that things started to change and immediatly my heart started pounding so i quit, i dont even know what happened, the physical reaction started first.. :confused:

I use a stool. It makes it very comfortable. It is similar to this one:

I'm meditating for focus and concentration, not so much the insight. I need to find balance again since i've been experimenting with dissociatives lately.

I know this is unrelated but do yall meditate with plants or herbs? I was thinking about using kratom for mediation sometime in the future. It's a focusing opioid agonist. I kind of thing this would be the perfect tool for this. Then again I probably shouldn't cheat.. :P

Oh and when it comes to breathing I just don't wanna upset or exaust my lungs since too much meditation might be overwhelming. I guess I'll have to balance my breathing as well. I don't wanna tire out my lungs.

I take a puff of marijuana via a vaporizer and before the high kicks in I get into position and the high usually blends right in to the mediation.

I forgot about marijuana. I have some of that as well. :smile:

but I prolly won't meditate with anything just yet. That's stuffs for when i'm a bit more advanced.

Don't worry about your lungs...just breath out until you feel your lungs tugging at your to get more air, then you smoothly transition into breathing in until your lungs tug at you telling you to breath out, so you transition into that, and so on....follow your breath for a while and you'll get a feel for this. It will end up as an even and full breath.

As far as intoxicants go, I would use them sparingly and as "treats" so to speak. When I did more yoga I would do it in silence but occasionally if I wanted to spice it up or if I wanted to treat myself I would play some music to accompany me. Turned out that Shpongle was really fun to listen to while doing yoga lol...

Yeah. I guess in this case I'm not ready for any drug. I must first find stability.

And I don't think I've ever heard of schpongle. What else music you like? You ever listen to rock music on meditation? I've always wanted to meditate to some Tool actually. I wonder what that would be like..

Seriously? To pass judgement on the words. To be unaffected by the lyricist. And to enjoy like a film. At least that's what I would imagine when listening to really fine music with full attention.

This is probably the best video on how to properly meditate that is floating on the web.



You will want to eventually meditate in the full lotus posture. This is extremely difficult though for most people and especially if you have never meditated before.

Try doing half-lotus posture 15min in the morning and 15min at night. It's important that you alternate your legs. In morning, put your right leg on top, at night put your left leg on top.

When meditating, do not close your eyes and do not try to suppress or control your thinking. Simply be and stare at the wall. Whether we try to control or ignore a thought, either way we still give it power. Whatever thoughts, feelings, or emotionas that may arise when you are meditating, simply allow them to be. In time, your mind will gradually become more and more subtle. Thoughts will arise less and less.

Your posture influences the mind and your mind influences your posture.
