Yeah, I've heard people claim that AIDS is gods punishment for the wicked. I remember one of the TV evangelists even said that's why Florida get so many huricanes, because of all the wickedness going around. I guess that's why it's so cold in Canada, on account of the coldness of the Canadian's hearts!

After the Sept. 11 attack one of them blamed immorality on the part of America as a reason God had not protected America from the attackers.

Catholicism: Shit happens, and I deserve it.

Mormonism: Shit happens over and over again.

Atheism: This shit's not happening.

Jewish: Why does shit always happen to me?

Hinduism: This shit happened before.

TV evangelism: Shit won't happen if you send more money.

Buddhism: If shit happens, it really isn't shit and it isn't happening.

Protestant: Shit won't happen if I work harder.

Agnosticism: I'm not sure if shit happens at all.

Born-again Christianity: Shit happens. Praise the Lord!

Zen: What is the sound of shit happening?

Islam: If shit happens, take a hostage!

Jehovah's witness: Knock, knock...shit happens.

Hare Krishna: Shit happens. Hare, hare, hare rama.

Rastafarianism: Shit happens. Let's smoke this shit.

I think the "Shit Happens" list has been around for a while. Islam should be changed to "If shit happens, blow shit up.".

In reply to:
In this thread you create a false image of God and then argue against him. That's what a Straw Man Argument does.

"The straw man fallacy is when you misrepresent someone else's position so that it can be attacked more easily, knock down that misrepresented position, then conclude that the original position has been demolished. It's a fallacy because it fails to deal with the actual arguments that have been made."

Seems to me the response to a straw man fallacy would be to point out how the position was misrepresented, in this case you would need to provide a valid arguement that his image of God was false. By claiming his image of God is false, but not backing it up, are you not making a straw man arguement of your own?

I found two different versions. I exchanged the Atheism, and Buddhism in this one for the ones in the other, which over all wasn't as good, but I thought those two were better.

"I think it's useless debating the whole God thing because I doubt it will change anyone's beliefs here. God is God. 'Nuff Said. "
Yeah, you are probably right about it changing people's beliefs, but I like to hear people's arguments and ideas about the matter. I forgot what the straw-man fallacy was, exactly, so thanks.

And yet you repeatedly make one error of logic after another.

No, I don't believe I do. Just because you don't understand what I am saying (meaning you don't agree) doesn't mean I have made an error of logic.

In this thread you create a false image of God and then argue against Him

In this thread I talked about my image of God and the image of God I was taught and I presented my image of God and argued against the image of God I was taught.

Your response to me also indicates that you might not even know what a Straw Man is. I watched you debate with Swami over the Law of Induction where you threw it to the wind as if it didn't matter.

Actually I am quite aware of the Straw Man and also, as to the Swami thing I didn't agree with her point of view, so what?

From all these posts I have to conclude that you have no idea what logic is.

I find this humourous because later you say...

And lastly, I do not think you are dumb, neither did I imply it.

So, I am not dumb, just have no logic?

Pray tell how it is that you determined that no one else had a negative reaction? Not all readers post.

You are right. Good point.

Instead recognize the existence of a third option and understand, hopefully, what a Straw Man argument is so that next time you are trying to state your argument you will not fall into another logical fallacy.

I don't agree with your opinions on everything, why does this mean I don't recognize all options and have no logic? How do you know what options I have considered and decided against.

Best of luck on your continuing education and thank you for posting here.

I am not going to respond to any of your points in the preceding post because I feel that to do so would waste your time and mine.

Cheers,

So many people make the mistake of becoming an atheist or refusing the existence of God because they only understand God through what is defined by the relegious sects. There are numerous conflicts with the way God is described by relegion. Don't you think you should form your own beliefs about God or what he(there is even a misconseption that God is man and should be referred to as HE; but I think it is degrading to God to describe God as being a man or woman) might be rather than accepting the cultures beliefs on the matter?

I think you know better than to base intellegent decesions on relegious heresay.

Shroomalicious said:
If you live a choir life but don't believe in God (or call him by the "wrong" name, like Allah instead of Buddha, for example) then supposedly God will send you to hell, and some say FOR ALL ETERNITY! (Note: In actuality "eternal damnation" only means "God's damnation" because the bible says "eternal is thy name" meaning God, so "eternal damnation" doesn't mean time, it means God's damnation/punishment.)

This theory seems to imply that God has a rather large Ego, IMO. He wants you to be a good person but if you are a good person and don't believe in Him/Her/It then you are going to Hell. It seems like God is putting his desire to "get credit" and recieve praise above ALL ELSE and if he doesn't get credit, and credit under the right name, then he will let you burn for eternity. I cannot believe in this God. I cannot believe in a selfish God, a God who creates only so that his creation will honor him, a God who puts Himself above all others. A God, whom we are told has a plan for us, but whos first concern is His own Ego. The God I believe in wants you to be a good person and cares not what you call him, Buddha, Allah, Nature, the Universe, etc. A God who is not concerned with labels but feelings, not flesh but soul. A God who knows, as Shakespeare once said, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet..."

I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. - Albert Einstein, obituary in New York Times, 19 April 1955

from a hasidic perspective...

in the torah god is described several ways.
~omnipotent: all powerful
~omniscient: all knowing
~benevolent: all good
and there is Scripture to support all those qualities specifically.

yet in life we know that bad things do happen to good people and good things happen to bad people.

now here is an obvious contradiction
so we accept that there are just things that we can't know about god. we are not able to fully rationalize the force that created rational. so we make the conclusion, god is good, all knowing, and all powerful--yet bad things do happen to righteous people. so accept that we just cannot know. If you asked a small child if he could describe the precise velocity and direction of an electron at a single moment, he will not know. yet if you ask the same question to the worlds brightest physicists they too would respond not knowing, but the difference is that the physicists KNOWS he cannot know. So to do we know that we cannot know the answer to the problem.
