Young Children as ego centric...true?
    #11569588 -

So I'm in this very interesting class right now called evolutionary psychology, it's just a human behavior class from an evolutionary perspective.  And something that came up the other day was this experiment where you as the observer can see two girls, one with a basket and one with a box.  The girl with the basket has a marble.  She leaves the scene.  The girl with the box takes the marble, puts it in her box, and leaves.  You are then asked "where will the basket girl look first for her marble?"  Obviously she doesn't know what the other girl did so she will look in the basket first.  But most young children will say that she looks in the box first.  My professor said this is an example of young children not understanding that other people's minds are not their own.

TLDR: Young children can't differentiate between what they know and what other people know.

So I raise my hand and say :"Isn't that evidence that young children actually don't have much of an ego yet?" My logic being that they haven't developed an individual sense of self and thus see less of a barrier between their internal world and the external world.  My professor said :"No, they are highly ego centric, they think that what they know, all people know, and can't empathize with other viewpoints."

I think that's all wrong.  Why would a child be born ego centric?  I think this is an example of psychologist's egos getting in the way of their thinking.

Who agrees/disagrees?

I think your prof. is right. children usually see themselves as the center of the universe. you are egoless when you're born but I guess it does't last very long. or maybe you stop being egoless the moment you're born

See, I would argue that the egoless state persists, and the me me me attitude is just a response to the fact that adults all dote on little kids and treat them like the center of their universe (which they are).

I'll admit the basis for my thinking is personal experience; when tripping I feel like I did when I was a child...in a state of less powerful ego.

here is what I think is happening here...

your professors interpertation = nondualisim.

yours & the majorities interpertation of ego centric = dualism.

If I'm correct and your professor is looking at the situation as children having non dualistic beleifs leading to their decisions, I agree.

I think today's society is pushing the age one starts conforming to dualism younger and younger as time goes by.

This could be less an ego thing then that the trip lets you drop some conditioning and gets you back into that somewhat "beginners mind". Less preconception and more wonder.

I think ego centric behaviour is a good half of existence, but perhaps there is too much negativity associated with the ego. Children are born with egoic-tendency, and start to show signs of it's development by age two. I don't want to pigeon hole children though, some have more "ego" than others. Even as kids are developing a sense of self, they are highly susceptible to their environment and elders, so what type of ego they have would probably be a product of nature and nurture.

I would also guess that children are born with a sense of "oneness", and it makes sense to me that the sense of higher self is also already there. If a child is around adults with over active limbic systems, that's what they will emulate, and pick up "ego" in that way. Adult egos rub off on kids.

Young children tend to be very self-centered in my experience.  Only later do we start to recognize that other people also have feelings and that these are valuable.

I am not so sure I would directly refer to it as "ego" though I find the concept of "Id" interesting.

Applying the concept of Id, a newborn baby, susceptible and responsive to instinctual wants and needs. The baby will develop mentality to achieve a means to having these needs fulfilled.
I think it goes beyond mere survival instinct, into manipulative behaviour.

A baby/child will learn set reactions of the adults, and the appropriate behaviour to be conducive to the desired outcome. I would say that even though it is learned from the doting parents, it is an indication of very strong self interests, and that being the limit in which they are able to comprehend.

To your original post:

I don't agree nor disagree... I have my own personal views, but that doesn't mean anything.
I'm glad you're asking the question... if you're clever enough, create an experiment that will test both hypotheses and determine which one is correct.
Otherwise it's just huffing and puffing. And you're going to lose such a match, because you're outnumbered.
Get evidence or get bent, that's the basic premise to live by when questioning the majority opinion.

Treads with the word ego in them are always a cluster fuck because there's like 20 ways to use it "officially" and an infinite number of slang ways that have gained acceptance.  Basically it just creates a bunch of seperate arguments all pointed at each other, with no hope of resolution outside of mutual understanding.  Ain't that a bitch?

Yeah, it boils down into a semantics argument more quickly than most debates.
