Deja Vu

What are your thoughts on deja vu? Is there some deeper meaning to it (ex: when our life crosses with an alternate dimension in which another "part" of us resides) or is it just a subconscious relation of current circumstances with a past memory?

I'm quite unsure on this, I'm interested in hearing others' thoughts.

I don't know if there is anything mystical in any dejavu experiences, but I do know that many (, most, if not all) experiences of dejavu are merely a vague sensation of scene familiarity

Yeah, that's known.  The question here is why.  I think the point of this thread is to entertain the implications of the phenomenon.

I think some people don't experience dejavu enough.. or perhaps they experience it too much... either way, my own experiences of dejavu, have shown me that it often occurs when a moment is very much like a previous meaningful moment, but not enough to actually bring back a memory of the previous moment, only enough to excite those neurons and give the current moment a sense of meaning or significance and familiarity that cannot be put down to anything within sensory or cognitive reach.
How do I know? well sometimes a memory of the earlier moment does indeed flicker into light. the scene feels like dejavu until the memory pops up, after which the scene just feels like a sort of repeat of a previous scene

I for some reason experience deja vu quite frequently. It can be eerie, especially when it includes the part where you say "oh, I have the worst deja vu right now."

But look around you right now...where are you? What is around you? What is happening? If you take notice of the details...how many of these factors/details are truly authentic only to this particular moment?

This is pretty much typical brain behaviour, to take note of patterns, familiarity.

If one goes as far as to predict an event (as an extension of deja vu) IMO it is a probability guess. If the prediction proves false, the brain would dismiss any concept of connection.

Deja vu is only ever backward-looking and therefore, meaningless. No new information is ever gathered. I see it soley as a neuronal processing hiccup.

I love deja vu, it is intensely personal, nostalgic and meaningful for me....memories of small and insignificant things from my youth mostly, very much like a salvia experience can produce...it feels like your back there for a brief moment.

I don't get the more typical 'this feels familiar but i am not sure how' experience, it is usually a direct lightning bolt association with another time or reliving of a feeling. My wife suffers epilepsy and has intense deja vu before having a mini seizure (she doesn't have the full blown ones), she can never link it back to anything significant, she just gets the feeling of familiarity.

I have been getting it a lot lately, something about the clean, cold, tangible smell of the Autumn air is setting me off (though interestingly, i never grew up in this country when i was young), i think smell plays a big part and is likely very strongly linked to memory (a handy evolutionary skill no doubt).

I don't know much about the science or leading theories into dejavu, but im gonna have to disagree with this one.  I think the feeling of remembering the present is not a "vague sensation of scene familiarity" in fact its not vague at all, its a very specific "Woah, this has happened before."

I've always felt, when I experienced dejavu, that I had dreamt or imagined (at some previous point in time) the reality which I now, at that moment, found my self in - even if I didn't really remember it. Just a feeling though, nothing but a "whisper" in the back of my mind leading me to think this.

Think of this? Imagine you now stand on the toilet, after just having pissed, washing your hands?

Now, when you actually do this. (No doubt it will happen, unless you have really poor hygiene.)

..will that not be a form of deja Vu?

Now imagine you sleep, and actually dream you go piss, and wash your hands..

..then wake up, and go realize that dream...

Deja Vu? Ehy!? :wink:

I experience very clear Deja Vu's (or until I started reading this thread I thought it was deja vu)

What happens to me is that i'll be doing something, then I start being able to "see" whats gonna happen next. Like to the very facial expressions of people and their movements. Like very immediate premonitions.

Like, for example. once I was sitting on the bottom of some stairs a person was standing across from me near a door. We were talking about something or other then I first realized; Hey, this has happened before, I know whats gonna happen next.

When I realized this, I kinda stopped paying attention to what my friend was saying, I stared off to the floor and I could "see" her turning around and bending over giving her back to me, I could even see the way her shirt was bunched up around in her lower back over her jeans.
Then I thought, whait that never happened and right after I thought this my friend dropped a piece of paper she was holding and turned around, bent over and picked it up. When she did I looked at her lower back and her shirt looked just like I had "seen" it before it happened.

I've always thought that was deja vu. like going trough a "scene" in your life and already knowing whats gonna happen next. Is that what it is?

thats pretty cool, is it pleasant? Doesn't sound like Deja Vu to me, and reading about smell memory also makes me think what ive been calling Deja Vu isn't either. I have no idea what you would call that though.

I have had a couple of experiences of true Deja Vu, but not many, but i can remember those experiences + feelings + the place they happened very clearly for some reason.

I dunno man... most cases of dejavu seem to be vague to reporters. not vague in teh sense that the feeling is vague, but vague in teh sense that the interpretation and meaning is.

Dejavu is often considered eery.. it can only be eery if it is vague. otherwise, it is just a memory and a recognition.

So I probably should have said 'many, most, if not all experiences of dejavu are merely a sensation of vague familiarity' which could be strong or weak or whtvr

i heard, a long time ago and i don't know if it is accurate, that deja vu is processing stimulus from the present through areas of the brain that process past memories, a gross oversimplification i am sure but something along those lines.
