IMO It's definetley not halluciagenic in anyway. Although, it does have a unqiue type of alcohol intoxication.
The effects are so suttle that if you drink too much your likley to be just very drunk and not notice the thujone.

I agree. Absinthe is portrayed as being hallucinogenic but it's not even close. The source of that rumor was all the people who went crazy from drinking it all the time back when it was so popular in Europe. Scientists attributed their hallucinations to the thujone (which is neurotoxic in large quantities) and didn't really study it further.

They did some new studies recently on old, original bottles of absinthe. The thujone content was so low that there was no way that it could cause hallucinations from neurotoxicity. Turns out the crazy people like Van Gogh were just fourth stage alcoholics who were experiencing delirium tremens.

Imagine that. They drank 140 proof liquor every day and became fourth stage alcoholics. Who woulda thunk it?

I've had a lot of different types of Absinthe. Whenever a friend or family travels to Europe I ask them to pick me up a bottle. One trust-fund kiddie that I knew at Emory used to order a different bottle from different places in Europe every month and we'd always sample it the night he got it. Almost set his room on fire a few times while preparing it too

The only real difference I've noticed with good absinthe is that you are much more alert and aware of what's going on than you would be if you were drinking something like whiskey. It's one of those that you can drink and read a book. Shitty absinthe just gets you really drunk really fast.
