First off - don't EVER drink Absinthe neat. Absinthe should be diluted with 3-5 volumes of water, preferably sweetened with sugar.

How to drink Absinthe with style is explained in the attached Flash file, which shows you exactly how it is done.

Do not use the element of fire in preparing absinthe. That "Bohemian tradition" was invented in the olden days of the 1990s, it is backed by ZERO traditions. It is wasteful, gives the absinthe a bad taste and is shocking to behold for one who likes absinthe.

Drinking absinthe neat is like drinking lemonade syrup neat - it is made to be diluted, only dilute (and in my view, sugared as well) will the bouquet develop.

Very true - homemade is where it is at! And with a wok still, most people can secure what they need (the right herbs and vodka to first steep, and then distill it with) legally and entirely offline if they want.

If you want to buy absinthe prepare to shell out the big bucks, and be VERY CHOOSY about where you buy, because prices on many sites are outrageous.

It is also very important WHAT you buy, because most brands simply do not taste like an Absinthe and are not made like an absinthe. Unlike any other drink there with Absinthe is a big risk that what you're getting simply isn't absinthe, because many companies with no Absinthe tradition simply slap together a concoction and call it absinthe, not hindered with any authenticity. Its like you buy a bottle of cola and there's ice tea inside.

I've compiled a small list of absinthes that are recommended over and over on the more reputable absinthe sites, and which have in fact won prizes on the "Absinthiades" which is the absinthe equivalent of the Cannabis Cup.

To avoid you getting ripped off, I've included prices which you would pay for these bottles in an European liquorstore, and in some online deals (minus p&p ofcourse)

These are all absinthes that were distilled using actual herbs, and all are comparable to quality absinthes which you would pay dearly for in the 1800s.

Absinthe Duplais Balance 60% ($30/0.5 liter)

Absinthe Montmartre 65% ($37.50/0.5 liter)

Versinthe, La Blanche, 57% ($30/0.5 liter)

François Guy, 45% ($35/0.5 liter or $60/liter)

Jade Nouvelle-Orléans 68% ($75/0.5 liter or $100/liter)

Jade Verte Suisse 65% ($75/0.5 liter or $100/liter)

Jade PF 1901 ($75/0.5 liter or $100/liter)

Jade Edouard 72 ($75/0.5 liter or $100/liter)

All these absinthes are considered to be good quality "real" absinthes. It is easy to pay the same or more for something that is utter rubbish.

Absinthe originates in Switzerland. Swiss and French absinthes have always been the best, Spanish absinthes tend to vary on the theme a lot and the Czech or East European countries have no absinthe tradition at all, and what their distillers call "absinthe" most often in no way resembles real absinthe.

Just like you'd want your cheese from Holland and your tobacco from Virginia, you'd want your Absinthe from France or Switzerland.

I went to botanical gardens today and got a wormwood cutting. Was wondering what the best way to make extract is on this stuff. Hear you can smoke it and gets you high like weed. I've also read that it might not have any hallucination like effects at all.

Don't do that.. thuijone is quite toxic and not that interesting... Its the synergy in the absinthe thats the key..
Smoking it is just another one of those "legal highs" that just leaves you with an headache..

Well, the real thing would be distilling herbs and alcohol together to yield an absinthe. Essences are added to alcohol of the right strength.

This obviously is an inferior procedure, but in the days of Absinthe's greatest popularity it was the most common way to prepare it.

An essence-absinthe is as good as the essence itself. If you look at much what is marketed as absinthe today, then a good essence can definitely be lightyears ahead of it in quality.

So if people got a good brand of essence and use fine alcohol and distilled water to mix an absinthe, I have little reservations.

Absinthe preferably should be kept in the dark for six months to "ripen". This can be greatly helped by adding a bit of oakwood (not bark!) to it, and shaking it full of air before the storage.

Absinthe is to be diluted with 3-5 parts icecold water.

I myself dilute 1 ounce of absinthe with 3 ounces water, sweetened with 1-2 lumps of sugar (you could simply use 5-10% sugar in water for convenience) and this with my homemade 68 makes it to 17% alcohol, a bit like Port in strength.

I love absinthe! I have tried Absente, the crap north american "absinthe", and Montmarte, and a few which I did not know the names of. Have you tried Ted Breaux's absinthes? Im heading over to europe this march break, going to bring back a bottle hopefully! But all in all, abstinthe is a great drink that is definetly meant to be diluted, and it is also a mysterious drink, one with interesting history and controversy. Bohemian absinthe OR Bohemian absinthe rituals =:puke: Burning absinthe or sugarcubes is such a waste.

Absinthe is taste. Then it is alcohol. Only then is it a bit more than that.

Because of propaganda, and because people STILL believe that it has hallucinogenic effects...I cant even tell you why, there is no real concrete reason, its just BANNED. The law is so dumb sometimes.

The main reason for the ban was the belief that it caused a syndrome distinctly different from alcoholism called Absinthism. This sickness was supposed to cause addiction, hyperexcitability, epileptic fits and hallucinations. These clams where later found untrue.

Another interesting point to all you who think wormwood is such an important and potent substance:

"The theory of a previous gross overestimation of the thujone content of absinthe may have been verified by a number of independent studies. Based on the current available evidence, thujone concentrations of both pre-ban and modern absinthes may not have been able to cause detrimental health effects other than those encountered in common alcoholism."

The pre-ban absithe had no higher thujone content than the present day European legal absinthe.

Actually that is not true.
Early mass-produced absinthes that were made by mixing essences sometimes had enormous thujone content.

But people should get off the whole "high thujone = get high" mentality. There needs to be a bit of thujone in there, but if there's more than that, things will get unhealthy rather than more interesting.

The thujone and anethole in absinthe act a bit like strychnine. In low doses it is a subtle kind of stimulant, but in doses that are too high severe cramping, convulsing and anxiety set in.

Thujone is best understood as a substance that has an exact opposite effect to valium.

There is something "extra" about absinthe, and it is that subtle stimulant effect of the convulsive toxins. This gives the drunkenness a clarity and sparkle not shared by most other alcoholic drinks, as certain GABA neurotransmitter effects cancel eachother out.

But it is nowhere near remarkable, and if you drink more than a few Absinthes, you'll simply end up drunk, with the virtues lost.

The virtue of abinthe lies in the low or modest dose range, in the phase between sobriety and drunkenness.

Hey! anyone have any recipes for home made absinthe? I just started propogating a little wormwood cutting I got from this botanical gardens I went to. I suprised and happy to see that they had wormwood!

In a nutshell:

ABSINTHE D'PONTARLIER

25 grams Wormwood
50 grams Aniseed
50 grams Fennel

this was steeped in 1.5 liters of 47% alcohol overnight

in the wok still it was distilled to draw off 1 liter

----------------------------------------------------------


It is very tasty but in my view if your herbs are good and you grind your fennel and anise and steep for at least 12 hours, then you could make it:

25 grams Wormwood
33 grams Aniseed
33 grams Fennel

and the result would still be quite strong!

Kudos, Wiccan Seeker, for the great thread on such a misunderstood topic. 

I've been an absinthe fan since I came to Japan for a study abroad semester.  Decent absinthe, although hard to find, wasn't prohibited here and I ended up going to an absinthe tasting party and buying several bottles to take home.  Since then, I've been ordering absinthe online from Europe and recently, I've been trying the new American brands.

My favorites are just about anything from the Jade lineup, with PF1901 being the best absinthe I've ever tasted.  I also like Kubler and Clandestine Swiss-style absinthes.  Versinthe LaBlanche was an early favorite due to its sweetness (also has a bit higher thujone content if that matters to you.)  In America, Lucid is a pretty solid choice too, but it's not very complex - just a clean, yet watered down Jade.  I've also tried Sirene from Chicago, but I wasn't really a fan.

Czech absinthe is an atrocity.

So I picked up quite a hobby and now have about a dozen bottles and spoons along with glassware and a fountain.  Even grabbed an antique spoon during my last visit to New Orleans.  For me, absinthe provides a clear-headed alcohol buzz and a great taste.  Love the stuff.  Can't wait for the market to expand in America.

Now that it is available here, I would actually guess it would hurt the absinthe market, overall...

Since most all average folks buy it only due to the mystique and propoganda driven legends of hallucinations and it being "forbidden" here for so many years, I'd guess that once everyone realizes that is all just a myth and it is no different than any other liquor, just a LOT more expensive, sales will slow to a snails pace here in America... 

(though I am sure curious teenagers/college kids will probably always still buy it for the novelty)

I've only had absinthe once.  It was great though.  We didn't even know it was absinthe at first.  We started drinking it neat and then some dude watered his down and when it changed colors he was like "woh, look at this guys."  Then me and a friend made the connection and got some sugar to do it right.

I have not read this thread, sorry I am getting ready for work so am kinda doing a few things at once, but I thought absinthe was legal in the US now, like the real deal stuff.

Mrs Fly won´t let me buy it - I get too brainless on it.  Absinthe has never been illegal in Spain and has been made here for 150 years.  Last time I bought a bottle of Mari Mayans I paid about €14.

Spanish Absente has evolved away from being an oldtime Absinthe though.

Duplais and Jade are good brands and you pay through the nose for those.

I once steeped an ounce of wormwood in vodka. The resulting green stuff was incredibly bitter, I mean just crazily so. I would use a small amount in tonic which made for a decent drink. The effect was subtle, but there was definitely something to it that was mildly psychoactive, and quite pleasant.
