I've never had real absinthe but I'd say if your finance is stable then get some.

mainly its just very high alcohol content..with various herbs that make the experiance more vivid and slightly psychedelic.

if you get the real stuff...with good amounts of the herbs i hear its quit diff then reg booze.

Do you like the taste of anise (or licorice)?  That is the predominate flavor of the drink.  It is fun to play with, but if you are expecting some kind of high, other than getting drunk, you will most likely be disappointed.

o i know...its more noveltly than anything...but i have heard some differance. US absinthe has a limit on the thujone levels. Id get a non us absinthe.

i hear it just makes things more vivid and colorful...but yea mainly its just a lot of alcy hah.

1) If you call psychedelic mushrooms boomers, there is a good chance you are mildly retarded. Maybe it's because your mom flicked your soft spot when you were an infant, maybe you were dropped on your head, or maybe it's because you ate lead paint chips as a kid. Either way, I just thought you should know. :tongue:

2) I've had the real absinthe before, the expensive ($100+ per bottle) stuff with very high thujone content on several occasions. The stuff I've had has been from from France, Czech Republic, and Switzerland. The only difference between absinthe and other liquors is it get you very drunk very fast due to it's high alcohol content. Most stuff is at around 140 proof. Some people claim colors are more vivid or it's a more lucid drunk, but placebo is real and they were drunk as shit when they said that, lol.

3) If you do get absinthe, please for the love of god don't just take shots of it. Prepare it the right way with a slotted spoon, sugar cubes, and water. It's actually pretty refreshing when prepared the right way.

I drank it a fair amount in Europe.  First off dont worry about the pussy method of pouring the shit over sugar and other pretentious nonsense some people might have you do.  Get the motherfucker, pour the shit into a fucking glass with ice, and sip it.  It's not bad tasting actually.

As for the effects, I always felt like I was more 'up' then when drinking normal liquor.  The effect is not intense but I felt like I was more clearheaded, almost like I had a mild stimulant while drunk.  As for psychedelic effects, it's hard to say really as I was generally trashed at the time.

Absinthe just gets you tremendously drunk without you realizing it until it is too late. Especially if you prepare it as you should (all the sugar ritual, etc).

Keep a bottle of nice cold water on the side and something salty to pick at.

Nice big baloon glasses, and sit around a table with some mates, somewhere dark and relaxed, with a few joints of great weed and watch the night fly away.

The stuff is just a stronger version of Pastis, which the french start drinking on terraces in bars at mid afternoon and keep at it til late as possible.

hey op,

how would you obtain your absinthe? if you are planning on getting it through the internet or any source other than a direct connection to someone in a place like the czech republic, then its a waste of time. 

the green colored drink that has been popping up around the USA recently is NOT the good stuff.  True absinthe is brewed with wormwood, which imparts thujone into the drink.  it is thujone that makes this drink mystical and different.  all thujone containing drinks (ie brewed from wormwood) are illegal in the USA.  if you are seeing anything that says its legal in the USA or can ship to the USA, then they are selling you absinth (no "e" on the end).  This is merely a green liqueur that is flavored with spices like anise (licorice) that yields a similar taste to absinthE but is not in any way brewed with wormwood (thujone). 

i recently spent a few weeks in the czech republic, which is one of the few places in the world where you can get the REAL thing.  i bought about 100$ worth of it and backpacked all around europe with it and tried to bring it back to the USA, but i learned the hard way at customs that there are very clear (and enforced) differences between what you can obtain and possess here vs in prague. 

unless you are going to brew it yourself or you have friends in the czech republic that are willing to secretly and illegally ship you some of the good stuff, i think you will be disappointed.

Im not sure what you are talking about.  I found real Absinthe all over Western Europe, and I wasn't particularly looking for it at first.  Also I can go walk down the street and find it (thujone absinthe) in a bar here (Washington DC)

hi i like absinthe but only for the flavour like pernod or ouzo but there is nothing special about it the wormwood does not give you vivid colours or hallucinations, all i can say is i can drink a lot of it(70cl and it is 68 percent even the cheap stuff is in the 50s) get real drunk but i dont feel sick and the next day i feel alright but thats just me everyone is different,so it really depends on your tastes :thumbup:

in general, i agree with this.


in the old days/old country, when you ordered absinthe you were given a small shot in the bottom of a glass, a pitcher of water, a spoon, and a sugar cube. it was up to you how you wanted to prepare it.

essentially, there is no "right" way.. just the popular way and your way. the popular way can vary greatly depending on the region you are in.

i have 4 bottles of absinthe in my liquor cabinet right now.

any restrictions that were in place on absinthe in the past were 100% lifted in (i think) May of 2007. most stuff you buy in the store is "real" absinthe.. whatever that means.

the only difference between what is commonly believed to be "real" and "fake" absinthe comes down to the simple measure of the quality of the product.. the comparison between Jose Cuervo and Patron is a good example. some absinthes are cheap and shitty (Lucid comes to mind) and others are really amazing (like Kubler or Jade Vert-Suisse) but you will have to pay for them.

paying $60-$100 per bottle isnt actually that bad when you consider you will be dilluting it 3-5 times with water. it will last a lot longer and its not something you can drink on a regular basis.. you need a certain mood to really appreciate it.

there are no hallucinogenic effects. because of the atmosphere, and the way it is drank, it creates this different type of drunken haze that isnt quite so easily describable. its just more of a relaxed, after dinner type thing as opposed to a "lets get wasted bro!" kind of mentality.

if you buy an absinthe that is making the tujhone levels a main selling point, or youre getting one because it is green and other is white they you are doing it wrong. a lot of absinthes are totally clear or cloudy white when water is added.. no green at all.

personally, my two favorites are Vert-Suisse and Kubler. both are Swiss.

You dont need a special absinthe spoon or fountain either. the fountains are great but they can be expensive for a nice one. they wont help or hurt the experience. a normal fork and pitcher (poured very slowly) will do just as well.


hope this has been somewhat informative.. i didnt expect it to be this long but whatevs... there is a lot of bad information floating out there around absinthe..



EDIT: if you would like to get a taste for Absinthe then pick up a bottle of Cartreuse. its pretty similar and a little cheaper if you dont want to spend $100 and run the chance of not liking it.. (most people ive given it to really hate it)

I've had several different brands of imported absinthe, some shittier than others. It's a very lucid drunk or as someone else put it, gets you very fucked up before you realize it. At the end of the day though it's mostly just alcohol and nothing special. If you want to drop some money on an interesting liquor then go for it, but I wouldn't plan my night around it.

If you're looking for a high absinthe doesn't do anything. Some people say it does but it really doesn't, it's just licorice flavored booze. If you want the licorice flavor just get Ouzo.

Kubler and Verte-Suisse are great.

Pernod is decent too.

all should be available in your local liquor store. Jade Verte-Suisse might be a little tougher to find but not impossible.

How much do the brands you mentioned run on average? The liquor store near me has shit for selection when it comes to absinthe, maybe 2 or 3 brands.

Although it will probably be shit, I'm curious to try Marilyn Manson's brand of absinthe, Mansinthe.

i think Kubler runs about $70.
Vert-Suisse (depending on the liquor store) will be closer to $100. sometimes more because they dont have it instock but they will order it for me.
Pernod usually comes in around $60.

yeah you can go to the bar and order it, and it may even contain some thujone.  however, its legal because it has less than 10mg/L of thujone, which under the law is classified as thujone free.  of course, they won't say that on the label.  the good stuff (and still illegal in the usa) has around 3 times that level, which you are correct in saying can be found in quite a few european countries now, but cannot be legally obtained in the usa

the ban that was lifted is what allowed for that loophole, but doesn't really change anything  with respect to getting what most of us are actually looking for

from dept of homeland security:

The importation of absinthe is subject to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations (21 C.F.R. 172.510 and the Department of the Treasury’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau regulations (27 C.F.R. Parts 13.51, 5.42(a), and 5.65. The absinthe content must be “thujone free” (that is, it must contain less than 100 parts per million of thujone); the term “absinthe” cannot be the brand name; the term “absinthe” cannot stand alone on the label; and the artwork and/or graphics cannot project images of hallucinogenic, psychotropic or mind-altering effects. Absinthe imported in violation of these regulations is subject to seizure
