yeah that label would make me pass on it but i just may have a bottle ordered.

the Jade Verte Suisse is about $100. the Kubler is only $65 or so. both are pretty solid.

For the price of a 0.5 liter Jade bottle I can get a 1.0 liter Duplais Balance bottle and even buy a high end absinthe glass or spoon along with it.

The Kübler.. ya its pretty likely a bottle will come my way sometime soon :smile:

Try that Duplais Balance, seriously :smile:

My opinion leans toward the side of it's a nice after dinner drink I have had several different kinds over the years but myself I prefer the Pernod..although I've never had the brand -Wiccan_Seeker- has mentioned..worth the money ?? depends on how much money you have!! ..e

Pernod Pastis is a nice aperitiv, I especially like it on hot days, one glass will cool you down considerably.

The thing with Pernod Absinthe.. Things like Jade, Duplais and indeed Kubler are made by steeping herbs in alcohol, then distilling the mix with the herbs still in the kettle.

Not so with Pernod Absinthe. Pernod Absinthe is made by taking 65% alcohol, adding essential oils, colorants and additives to it and then filling bottles with it.

This unfortunately is how most cheap liquors are made nowadays but... Pernod Absinthe aint cheap. You pay as much as for a good Absinthe distilled with herbs.

From what I heard, Pernod Absinthe is "nice but not great". I'll gladly sample a glass but I won't shell out bucks for a bottle, not because I know how its made (nontraditional food industry process) and not because I read too many disappointed reviews.

Pernod Fils absinthe from around 1900 was THE Absinthe. Pernod-Ricard of course kept the recipe, the still plans (distillation apparatus shape and materials make or break the flavor of a recipe), the procedure.. But instead of resurrecting the benchmark of quality that their great grandfathers made, they chose to mass produce an oil mix liquor thats cheaper to produce yet priced at least $15 per bottle too high compared with similar liquors.

Pernod Fils absinthe was about quality, the contemporary Pernod Absinthe is about profit.

For $15 cheaper per bottle I'd buy it and it probably will be OK, but given its the same price I much rather spend that money on a traditional Absinthe and be rewarded by a green goddess thats great.

Its not snobbery, they just got greedy and put a big price on a small bottle.

totally agree. i could never put my finger on why i just didnt care for it as much as Kubler or Jade. this make sense. its not that it dont like it.. its just not quite as good as the others.

Two of my favorites are Absinthe Suisse La Bleue Clandestine and Abisinthe Amer. You can't go wrong with either of those.

La Bleue Clandestine is really good. I usually have a bottle of Kubler on hand, I tend to like swiss absinthes.
Wiccan Seeker gave a lot of spot on info here, I'll add another "avoid Czech absinthes" here- they are just wormwood bitters, as they typically don't contain the anise.
If you like anise, you'll like absinthe. Let us know what you get and what you like!

OK a reply to an old post - but that is why old posts are still kept and not ditched. 

Absinthe has never been illegal in Spain - unlike other European countries, and has been continually made here since the 1850s.  I can buy a bottle of Marie Mayans 80% for about €14.  But Mrs Fly hates me drinking the stuff.
