From yahoo.com headlones:
Reuters Photo Canadian PM doesn't think Bush is "a moron" (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, attempting to head off an embarrassing spat with Washington, has quickly distanced himself from a senior official who reportedly called U.S. President George W. Bush "a moron". Opposition legislator Jason Kenney told parliament he believed the comments -- which were reported by several newspapers on Thursday -- had been made in Prague by Chretien's communications director Francoise Ducros.
Mpore at yahoo.com on this matter.

That still doesn't change the fact that Bush is indeed a Moron...

That's debatable, but i'm not surprised a canadian felt the need to "tell the world"
you (generally) probably don't want to know what we think of the Canadian PM......

This kind of thing always makes me laugh. Jean Chretien has kind of a habit of making jokes that get him in hot water. The fact that english is not his first language doesn't help. http://www.bayrak.ca/politics/chretienquotes.htm

When holding a press conference on Free Trade with U.S. president Bill Clinton, Canadian prime minister Jean Chretien was asked what he thought about all the drugs that were entering Canada from the U.S. He responded: "Well, it's more trade." After a tense moment of silence and some muffled laughter Clinton leaned over and whispered something in Chretien's ear. Chretien immediately blurted "Oh drugs! I thought you said trucks!"

Actually I would be VERY interested to hear what Americans think about our P.M. considering the vast majority of Americans still think our P.M. is Pierre Trudeau...

from my limited knowledge about it, I think that canadian activities of late (at least in regards to their interaction with the us) certainly earn MY seal of approval.

Boy, that's real funny.
Good old Trudeau...boy, he sure had spat's with the American presidents. Richard Nixon called him an 'asshole' to which he responded by saying 'I've been called worse things by better people'
Trudeau asked America 'why should I care what the idiots in the pentagon think?'
One high level american official called him 'a leftist high on pot'
Coolest PM ever.

Although I despise Trudeau for what he did to Alberta while he was in power, I do think that he was probably the best leader we've had. He was an extremely intelligent individual that spoke his opinion openly...whether or not you like him, you have to admire him.

The NEP eh?
The Nation Energy Program of the early 80's
I don't think it was bad for Alberta. I think that's a lie perpetrated on the people. The NEP essentially was about bringing Canada's onwership of it's oil to about 50%, and about using our advantage as a net energy exporter to make energy cheap for Canadians.
Alberta has 80% of Canada's oil, so the protest from there was "your taking a provincial resource to use for the country, if one province controlled it, it would be better for that province (us)'. A selfish position, especially from the point of view of the rest of Canada.
The NEP provided a mechanism for endless government loans to buy back Canadian oil interests in our own borders. That failed because at the same time, the Bank of Canada raised interest rates to somewhere around 22%. Not a good time to go into debt.
The made in Canada price for energy was defeated by the greed of oil producers who would rather charge the world (scarcity) price.
Peter Lougheed and Alberta won the battle, the NEP never got very far. I think Alberta (and the rest of Canada) is much worse off under the present regime. It's not like the non NEP oil money goes to Albertans generally, mostly, it's in a few private hands. You as an Albertan are paying a ridiculous price at the pump, and the small proportion of money the Alberta government does get is mostly squandered on things like corporate welfare. Yes, the Alberta government is VERY into corporate welfare.

The legacy of the NEP was billions of dollars going into the federal coffers at the expense of Albertans...The overall effect was to bring resource activity in Alberta almost to a halt. Western Canada became a less attractive place to invest and as a result provincial revenue was siphoned east...The energy program followed a long history of economic alienation fromout east... railway rates, monetary and other policies that worked to the advantage of Central Canada worked directly against the interests of the West.
The NEP almost completely devastated the Albertan economy...if it wasn't for the NEP, Alberta would have experienced a mild recession instead of widespread misery.

ANd he loived with Claudine Longet who was married to Andy Williams and they smoked pot which was cool. I later found out after I posed the message that it was an aide of his in europe who made the quote. The aide said somrhing about not remembering making the quote but offered to resign and the pm refused the resignation.

Hope they decriminalize the pot there though.

Not a very intelligent move for Canada. It's the same with the Germans: how do they help themselves with critical comments about the USA. They need the USA a hell of a lot more than the USA needs them. A big reason why Canada can afford the socialized medicine is due to the fact that they don't have to worry about fielding a viable military because no one will fuck with them because they are next door to the USA.
The Canadians love to complain about the Yanks, but if not for the Yanks, the USSR or China would have annexed Canada long ago.

Wow, USA USA USA!!! You guys have met perfection. Yup yup. I'll be the first to admit my country isn't perfect, but you seem to think your country is. You also seem to think that someone(not our PM BTW) in our country calling your leader an idiot is merrit to break off all ties with Canada. "Not a very intelligent move for Canada" I'll be sure to let her know. I think Bill Maher said it best whe he said that America should strive for perfection instead of calling people who call for improvement "traitors". People say "I don't like how America deals with oil" and you reply "Well that's your problem! I like America". It's like the famous quote "either you're with us or against us". There is always room for improvement.
