Not just that.
I mean you got a two partiy. People in those partys are linked pretty good. They have the same mentors aka sponsors.
It reminds me of anyhypothetical situation where you can choose between Hitler and Stalin. No big difference at all. And oyu can choose among them.
The system that is so caled democracy, people used to call oligarhy.

There are many factors, the biggest of which is the media which is truly owned by the corporations.
Through careful cencorship they are able to keep America ignorant and distracted by horse shit. When the election rolls around, the media tells the public what the issues are. Like in the last election, the biggest issue they could come up with to disagree on was social security??
The majority of the American people are disenfranchised with the system. 60 percent did not vote in the 2000 election. They would rather totally not pay attention.
This does not mean that the situation is hopeless, although it seems to be getting worse daily.
The problem, Crobih, is that nobody is paying a shit of attention, and even if they were, they aren't being told anything the least bit controvercial.
The dudes who wrote the First Amendment believed that the free flow of information is essential in finding out the truth.
This is as true today as it was 200 years ago. And now we have secret fucking courts releasing CLASSIFIED rulings...
Imagine the nerve to classify a court ruling....
Especially on a Constitutional issue!
Badamn.
But it can be fixed. It is just going to take a lot of smarts.

Nah, the majority are fine. Look at the history of racism, slavery, the war on drugs and you'll find it took a tiny rich minority decades to instill and create fear in the majority. During slavery times the poor whites were so friendly to runaway blacks that the landowners panicked and had to start passing laws banning whites from helping them.
The minority at the top are the scumbags, we need to remove their influence first. Without 70 years of media influence would drugs really be such a worry to people? 100 years ago they were buying heroin over the counter and not giving it a second thought. It took decades to change that.

....At least if voting is compulsory you know that at least 90-something % of the population are actually being represented...not a hell of a lot to ask once every four or so years, is it??
you get dubya and not even 50% of the people voted... 
People say that in a democracy there should be free choice and any attempt at forced voting is undemocratic, but isn't disenfranchising all felons permanently a recipe for disaster?...you get a section of the nation unable to have any say in what happens politically in the country which can only encourage them to think 'fuck everybody...' in the future

Let me notice something. Its not american people thing that some ladens hate america. Its the problem of american politics. Now, why do you allow that? I guess that is because of the thing that you have no ANY INFLUENCE on american politics.
Knowing that you do not have any influence on american politics, makes your undemocratic country.
Off course it is the problem of most world "democracies". But, anyway, just do not call it the way it is not.

Americans don't pay much attention to politics.
Do not think for one second that the leaders of Congress do not fear the vote. They do. They are just confident in the fact that nobody is really paying attention.
The public COULD change the system if they cared. They don't.

In america the Democratic Leadership Council has is now completely corporately governed, and then think that Bush takes advice and borrows money from Bill Gates. But you can't just blame america, look at Tony Blair and panacea, and McDonalds sponsering his party conferences. And what really hurts is when US gets involved with cheating and lying companies like Enron, then when they go down, the US goes down and everyone who relies on us goes down and there goes the global economy
