enlightening experiences with psychdelics?

Here is a question that has been exercising me lately: Can the experiences that are provided by LSD, psilocybin, mescaline really be called liberating, enlightening? Do they really change lives? Or do these substances play with us, make us feel, while we are under their influence, that we are really onto something important, some key truth--something great that seems simply weird the day after when we are sober.There are a lot of spiritual teachers who say anything you get through psycedelic experience is just foam--it melts away and leaves yhou where you were when you before you ingested.

its not like you are 'under the influence' of a drug but instead for the first time you are able to be free of unwelcome influences...

I remember what I think about when Im on shrooms, it makes me think of stuff I SHOULD be thinking about instead of what I actually think about when Im sober.

I think when one thinks about psychedelics, and has never taken them, whenever they do decide to embark on a journey, it will be something completely different than their expectations.

the important thing to remember about all of this is that it is solely depended on what YOU choose to take from the experience

there are a lot of people that seem to think that this is just some magic pill that will instantly make their life a bazillion times better just because they take it, and often times these are the very same people that have a moment of clarity at the time / do nothing to change their situation / and then bitch about how it's all just smoke-n-mirrors

all the shrooms can do is just simply show you a different perspective...it's still up to the person that's taking em to do something with that information  :craven:

and if you want examples:
  • I *saw* that my grand mother's church was just a buncha self-ritcheous assholes that were putting ona show for the rest of the world
  • so I stopped going
  • I saw that my mother's crack-headed friends were just taking advantage of me, and dragging me down to their level
  • so I high-tailed it outa there
  • I saw that writting could only 'show' the reader so much of what I wanted to portray
  • so I switched gears to persue film instead
  • I saw that porn was about the most lucrative business on the planet...but also one with the most problems (potentially anyway)
  • and I figured out how to cash in on that scene without having to be an active participant
and it all comes down to three basic proncipals in the end:
  • the information you get during the trip
    (which you have no real control over)
  • your interpretation of such things
    and probably most importantly of all:
  • your reactions to your 'eppiphanies'
because simply knowing what 'ought to' be done, means nothing unless you take time to go through with it  :craven:

I just recently discovered the greatness of the fungi. Since I started "tripping" this summer I feel like my life has taken a much more positive route. My relationship with my parents have improved dramatically (I once read somewhere that mushrooms improved communication), I have a better outlook on life, I realized that I had a problem with heavy drinking and pretty much cut that out. So I guess I feel "enlightened".

Beware of false promises that psychedelic drugs offer. You think you have found some insight, or perhaps answer and further understanding to the human dilemma........but answer me this.


Did you really need "Drugs" to make you realize that your "Drinking" was really harmful? Or could a little mindfulness on your situation have figured out that habitual/chronic alcohol abuse is bad for you  :rolleyes:

I'll admit that it's not an absolute 'neccessity' per se...but that doesn't means that a good healty kick in the pants doesn't sometimes help  :wink:

HOnestly they do.......but there are so many "Enlightened" dudes around the forum preaching the Gospel of Psychedelics that it encourages me to argue against it. There are allot of new members and new psychedelic experimenters in the forum. What kind of message are we sending if every post is 100% Pro psychedelic liberation :shrug:

I wouldn't call it enlightenment.  I would call it more of a pure experience of reality.  Just dealing with the raw data your senses and brain are computing.  When im tripping i forget how fast im supposed to walk, what kind of things to say to strangers.  Basically all the culturally learned things imbedded in my psyche are thrown out the window.  And i just experience my reality in a more unique just raw way.  And that can attribute to noticing some things in our society that are "the way things are" that are fucked up.  And you notice that things don't have to be "the way it is."
