Depending on your hair type Dreads can be a very very big commitment.. If generally takes about a full year to get them to fully lock up.. Today there are soo many great products and shampoos for dreads that you can use everyday.. Don't be dirty and make sure you wash them every 2 days.. They take alot of work in the beginning. Some people use a neglect type method and they usually turn out looking like dirty shit sticks.. A respectable woman won't come near you with some nasty greasy ass hair. So if you choose to have them, do it right! I would use Dread Head HQ products exclusively.. The make the best wax, shampoo, and have great maintenance tips and tricks. They also make an awesome product called "locking pepper" it's amazing. Plus there locking accelerator is A+. I had a good friend who had dreads for 6 years.. And these were not nasty neglected grease sticks. They were clean looking full of body and volume always smelled nice and were washed every other day. He got soo many girls when he had them and everybody loved his dreads. But he always always was working on them.. Working on the roots constantly, root-balling loose hairs, palm rolling and waxing every other week. He had an amazing maintenance schedule.. One week he would use locking accelerator, the pepper, and make root-balls and root rub all week.. During that week they looked kinda frizzy. Then the following week was his palm rolling and waxing week.. Trust me if you have very thick very straight hair dreads are def work. Also if you want to look respectable and clean they take alot of maintenance.. You don't want to look like a greasy dirtball haha. Anyway if you need any info PM me I have a wealth of knowledge about dreads and an amazing website I can link you too. Take it easy.

Dreadlocks look awesome, but are fucking gross; depending.

I knew several people would say this.  Dreads are gross when you have like 3 gigantic ones, or when you look like the pic on the front page.

And some people don't take care of their dreads.

But as long as you take care of them, they'll be clean, neat, and won't smell.

My uncle has dreads to the floor.

He's 58 and has not cut his hair since he was like 17. The only reason they don't drag is because people step on them and break them off.

Great convo starter for him. I say go for it, if you don't like them then cut that shit off.

No I'm not stupid I'm right. Those products are A+. They are by far the cleanest, fastest and easiest way to lock your hair.. Sea water? Sea water right out of the ocean is just dirty and not a good thing to use. It does not work well at all.. Dread Head HQ makes the best dread lock products in the world. Visit there site and check the stuff out. Maybe even try using it before you talk shit.. They make great shampoos, locking accelerator (clean sea salts are in the ingredients) the best wax and there loose hair tool is a great tool for dreads. If you want clean, healthy, nice smelling and perfect dreads those products are for you. Yea you can get good results on your own with your own methods.. But for somebody totally new to dreadlocks or somebody who wants there hair to be clean and look professional they make the best products by far. Look at all the pictures posted on there site.. Mostly everybody has healthy, clean and beautiful hair. Not dirty, greasy, shit sticks that are all different sizes and loose hairs everywhere like most of the dreads I see at festies or Phish shows... Most of the dreads I see look terrible.. Some people have nice dreads but most don't. There is nothing wrong with using top of the line products for top of the line results.. God forbid if you want to look professional and clean.. Not everybody wants to look like that guy posted in this thread with that beaver tail haha.

fucking scenester.

"zomg dreadlocks are such a cool hairstyle, let me go to the salon and pay $400 to get them done"

do whatever the fuck you want to your own hair, i don't give two shits. but don't call your chemically aided fashion statement dreadlocks.

these are dreadlocks

all you need is the ocean, the sun, maybe some lemon juice & coconut milk if it itches, and a good dry soap like dr bronners or mysore sandalwood to wash them.

DO NOT WAX YOUR DREADS. It makes them sticky, smelly and gross. If you cut a dread that's been waxed regularly the middle will be filled with disgusting goop you can squeeze out like a tube of toothpaste I GUARANTEE IT!

Fuck Dreadhead products, if you can't manage your dreads on your own, or make your own products to use (very easy) then you don't deserve your dreads IMO. Don't be a lazy bastard.

On a side not, girls always used to say I was alot sexier when I had dreadlocks, I got alot of ladies.

Look first off who said anything about chemicals? You obviously never seen the site I'm talking about.. They sell wax and shampoo and tools. Where is the chemical?? Where do you see $400?? The huge kit on there is only $40.. They give you the best directions. I know alot about dreads I had them a long time... They are just a hair style... What else could they be? They are hair.. They give you directions how to make your dreads. By backcombing and palm rolling and using the beeswax. Then they give you directions for the shampoo. It's a great shampoo no added scents and it leaves no residue (very important for locking your hair) it has no smell but works great on your dreads. Then the locking accelerator (which is sea salt based spray) to help the knotting and locking. Then they give you tips and tricks on how to work with loose hairs how to help get the newly grown roots to lock all kinds of cool stuff. Plus everything they sell is vegan friendly, not that I care I eat meat but some people do.. Those dreads in that picture are dirty and he probably never washed them... Maybe like once every 5 years or something.. It's important to wash dreads every few days to get rid of oils and residue in the hair. These don't help dreads form. People want to look professional.. People want to look clean, have a respectable job and not smell.. People automatically think dreads are dirty and smelly because they don't know anything. By keeping your dreads clean and neat not only do you look more respectable but you knock out all those stereotypes about dread locks.. Why don't you take a look at the site? I'm sure after you see there products and things you will agree that they make amazing products for dreads.. They have the best products and tips for somebody new to dreads and for somebody who has had them for years..

There is nothing wrong with beeswax.. It doesn't build up like you say unless you don't wash your hair frequently.. Yea you can make homemade stuff but why? I think dread head makes the best products by far.. I used there loose hair tool all the time to pull loose hairs back into the roots of my dreads and then up into the middle of the dreads. It was a great little tool. The shampoo was the best.. The wax was amazing and smelled good.. I never had any success with any other stuff. I had a black friend who used to use Murray's Beeswax haha. That stuff was just Vaseline basically. I never had loose hairs, my dreads were never fuzzy, I washed my hair every other day so I always had a clean head, I looked clean and respectable and my dreads were fully locked in under a year... It took alot of work.. In the end tho it was all worth it. How come you don't like waxes? Also what kind of shampoo did you use? Tea tree shampoo I heard was good but I never liked it too much..

Could you learn to not type in such large blocks of text? It makes it hard to get past your second or third sentence.

Do not use wax. It's a waste of money and time and it can get very messy very quickly for somebody who knows fuckall about what they are doing.

79towncar, you wash every 2 days? Kudos to you, man. I couldn't stand doing that, and it may actually be dangerous. If your dreads don't get a chance to get bone-dry before your next wash you are going to get some heinous mold growing inside those locks, which will smell atrocious.

As for dread "products", you don't need to bother with them. Just buy a nice smelling natural soap, or stick with good ole Dr. Bronner's.

Just stay away from the wax, it will save you a lot of trouble in the end.

Saves money, you know your getting good quality stuff, because it's your own quality control, it's all natural, which most people with dreads tend to care about.

I have nothing against the shampoos, I had a bar of the knottyboy bar shampoo that I used once a week, but homemade products are the best IMO.

The one piece of advice I always got from people with dreads for a long time, or used to have dreads, was to NOT wax, for the very reasons I mentioned above, I've not actually experienced it. Though I maintained my dreads just fine with good ole palm rolling and love, and I'd say they looked great compared to some/most. I used a crochet hook to reel in all the stray hairs, and that was the most complicated thing I had to do.

For homemade products I used this recipe, which works awsomely:

Na I don't work for them I just like there stuff. Yea I wash every 2 days.. I always squeeze them out real well then blowdry....

Yea you def must get them dry or else mold could be a problem.. I will admit its a pain..... I just can't have dirty hair tho.

I always loved using wax.... Always made mine look neat and clean also it keeps them from drying out.... I maintenance them every single day..
The first week I work on balling loose hairs and pulling them into my roots... I rub the roots... Then I use locking pepper or accelerator to just help out with making knots. That week they are frizzy and pretty dry.. I don't use wax that week.

The next week I use alittle wax and just palm roll everyday.. They usually look best this week.. They don't look dry or frizzy at all. They look perfect.... I had problems at the beginning because they are thin... But I'm happy now because They are sooo full looking and don't look flat against  my head..

Some people I see... It almost looks like they are missing hair or loosing hair.. You know what I mean??
They are either too big or flat in the back from sleeping on them..

I don't think there stuff is overpriced at all. The shampoo is $10. That's cheap to me. I only bought two wax jars... It has lasted me almost 6 years... I still have alot left too.

Krishna you don't have to be so hostile everything I've posted I've posted because I do think it will help somebody's dreads out.. You understand? What do you have against wax or special shampoo?? Do you think they should be formed natural??

I had a good friend backcomb my hair.. That's how I started mine out. I just wanted neat rows and uniform sized dreads..

Thanx for the vid.. I can see what you mean by making you own stuff like this.. I did actually try a rosemary spray in the beginning... It came out good and smelled great too... I used it after ice hockey sometimes...

I would spray it on after I took my helmet off for the ride home. Anybody who playes ice hockey knows how bad that smell is... So for the ride home I used the spray..

In the end tho It was just more convenient to buy stuff from online... I always had great results and loved the way my hair looked.. Yea everytime I talk to people about dreads they all hate wax..

I never had a problem tho and It works for me.. I do have to basically melt it out of my head when I wash it... But I only use it 4 days out of a month and I wash my head 15-20 times per month...

So if you never used waxes.. What else did you use in the beginning to help your dreads mature?? Do you have any other recipes for dread stuff you can link  me to?

Also do yours ever dry out real bad? Or have any breakage? What do you use to keep them from getting overly dry? Just sprays like these and regular shampoos??

If you want dreds, don't wash your hair, go in the ocean every day, don't comb your hair.

Also there is a technique called 'bat combing' where you take your length of hair and extend it out with your fingers, take the comb and comb backwards towards your head. It basically starts knotting up your hair.

It's important that your hair is clean when you are attempting to grow dreads... You shouldn't wash them for about a week after you backcomb them but after that you should keep them clean. Dirty hair does not lock well..

You need your hair free of residues.. Salt water does work but you should always boil it before using.. Ocean water is dirty as hell. Boil it then use.. If you want dreads then grow them.. It's not hard and doesn't take long...

You can have your hair fully locked up in a year if you use the right methods.. Make sure to keep them clean.. That's very important.

I was thinking of getting dreads, and I was going to use a dead kit as well...

Your standards are ridiculous dude.  I wanted dreads not as a fashion statement, but as a statement of my feelings and opinions.  Kind of like me wearing a t-shirt that says "society's pressures and it's effects are stressful, tiring, and break me down...I have decided to more fully pursue my own individuality and break off from trying to associate myself with the norms, any norms of any image, or class"  When I was thinking about dreads I wanted to get them as a way to push myself into not giving a fuck about trying to please other peoples expectations of me.

Although I would not be a shepherd, or a poor man, or a wandering travel whose dreads came from uninterrupted natural progressions, that does not make my intentions and goals any less honorable or genuine.  Just because I do not have the freedom from society to let me hair grow out to become dreads, does not mean that I do not want to say the same message those with dreads wanted to say...in my case, "fuck the limitations and pressures I feel on myself, caused by an un-accepting and impersonal society"

The only reason I didn't get dreads is because I didn't want people to judge me by them, to not try and consider and learn and accept my true character, because they have these expectations for me because of the typical character traits associated with having dreads today in the U.S....I learned its tough to be yourself, but being yourself starts with you creating your own paths, not following the paths of those who held similar beliefs.
