Thinking about dreadlocking my hair.

I have absolutely no experience or knowledge about this process. My hair is naturally curly and falls just above my waist right now. Why do I want to do this? I don't know. Just kinda feel like it.
Any suggestions?

Um no lol. Well unless you want some stinky dirty ass hair that method is a waste of time.
You can go to an ethnic hairdresser and get them done. I think this way will end you up with some pretty neat/organized dreads. You know like how black guys look with short dread hair its all perfect and shit.
I'm going to end up dreading my hair I just don't know if I should start it myself or go to one of those hair dressers. I kind of want the more natural look, but I don't want them to look shitty. I'm also not sure if I want to go to a dresser and have my dreads look like a perfect wig or something lol.

Yeah, I know. I guess I'll have to shop around and stuff. I kinda like the way my hair is right now (free) but at the same time I need a change and I don't want to be concerned with my hair so much. I'd just like it to be. What kind of maintenence is involved with dreads?

Moldy dreads? Bah! Never heard of this before... the only way it would happen is if you never let your hair dry and kept it continuosly moist or wet, and had super-thick dreads. I know people with some dreads probably 4 inches in diameter without a problem. If you let your hair dry and don't seal it in a plastic bag, you're probably fine!!
When I first wanted dreads, I decided to go get dreadwax and do the whole backcombing thing to knot my hair... some came out, some didn't... some were so shitty I had to cut them out (luckily didn't do my whole head the first time around.) After the summer right after this, I stopped brushing my hair, and wore it in a pony-tail a lot. This started forming dreads and has been continuosly ever since. It's been about a year and a half, and still ALL of my hair is not completely dreaded, but most of it. Natural dreads like this are good, because for 1, you don't have nasty wax all through your hair for months, which is less than comfortable and makes your hair stiff and greasy. As well, the naturally formed dreads look a lot better than what I've seen with most back-combing... though most people i've seen backcomb don't have a clue what they're doing. If you're planning on dreads, conditioner is an absolute no-go, because it will strip them, and most commercial shampoos, if used regularly are a bad idea because of the chemicals meant to smooth hair out, thus resulting in dread loss or no beginning of dreads in the first place. You can get special shampoo for dreads. Instead of doing this, I just don't shampoo my hair often... maybe once a week, sometimes significantly less (once a month)... but I wash it regurlarly with water, which is perfectly fine to keep your hair clean... my hair never smells, grows mold, or has bugs. People use the stupid commercial shit normally because they're taught to... they don't realize natural hair (and body) oils are beneficial, and there for a reason... they protect one's hair (and skin) from detrimental external factors... people that shampoo/condition regularly will have far less healthier hair than those who don't. The cool thing about dreads is that they soak up much of the excess grease (which is necessary to form them), thus the majority of your hair will not be all shiny and nasty feeling. I can go a long, long time, without shampooing, before my hair gets noticably greasy... before I had dreads, and before I stopped using shampoo on a regular basis, my hair would get abnormally greasy within 24 hours if I didn't wash it with shampoo... Shampoo=bad shit. It's not natural, nor healthy... well, some are, but not commercial crap.
Also, making dreadlocks yourself, or more likely, having someone else do it, can take a long ass time. If your hair is to your waist, your looking at an hour or two of backcombing (done correctly) per dread... and think of how many dreads you might need to do. My preference is to let them form by themselves but not brushing my hair... if your hair is curly to begin with, it'll speed the process up quite a lot.
Good luck

Certain people just can't pull off dreads.. and a lot of people do them wrong. For example those with really thin hair types (I am one), dreads are possible.. but they would look like shit even if done properly. Much easier to make phatty dreads when you have thick and coarse hair.

Don't dreadlock your hair! Everyone I know that has done it has gotten bored of them after a while, and you wind up losing a ton of hair when you try to brush them out, or wind up just having to chop them off. Your hair is gorgeous the way that it is

Yeah, my second option other then dreads is to just keep growing it out.
I don't know. Maybe I'm bored with life and expected dreadlocks to spice things up a bit.

These people are nuts... dreadlocks are beautiful... unless your judging by societal standards, then I can understand why they might not be. Just about everyone I see with dreads, looks great. I think they're one of the most creative, and significant commitment(s)/statement(s) you can make with your body. Do as you feel. You'll know if you're down for it or not. Just so everyone knows... dreads are THE natural hairstyle... hair left alone and untampered are dreads.

What is so creative about making your hair smelly and dirty? I honestly don't get it. If it were some sort of original statement, that's one thing. But 346987345 bajillion suburban white kids have dreadlocks and it just looks retarded.

There's a big difference between natty smelly dirty dreads and someone who actually takes care of their dreads and cleans them regularly. Contrary to popular belief you can wash dreads, you just want to avoid commercial shampoos with tons of chemicals that strip the hair.

Dreads aren't dirty, nasty or moldy if you take care of them right. However, I suggest you make sure you're willing to commit to them for a matter of years before you start. Don't be one of those people who give up and try to painfully comb them out.

Dreads are NOT smelly and dirty if maintained... obviously that's one judging by societal standards, because society sees dreads as dirty... why? Because it's opposed to their cut-and-dry purty, purty supermodel outlook. That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard, and heard so many uneducated, non-experienced people say: "They're dirty and smell!" Bull-fucking-shit. I've got dreads... they're clean and don't smell. In fact, most people I've ever met that have dreads, have clean hair that smells, like, well, nothing! Poor hygeine is what results in dirty/nasty hair. If your hair is knotted, it does not mean it's dirty or smells... however, yes, some people that don't wash themselves will obviously end up with dreadlocks because of such reasons, but this is not the standard to judge the rest of dread-bearing humanity. People would not continually dread their hair if it was so wrong. And it IS a statement... a statement to prove those wrong that believe that dreads are 'dirty and nasty'... it also is a statement against any company, corporation, group, or individual that presses and pushes the false view of beauty onto the world. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

No seriously man... commercial shampoos and conditioner strip your hair continuosly (if used regularly) from natural oils that DO PROTECT YOUR HAIR... I don't know what I'm talking about?!? I don't see how you figure. I've done the research, have you? Just because shampoo and conditioner makes your hair smooth and shiny, does not mean your hair is healthy. Health is a natural balance... NATURALLY most people do not have shiny soft hair. Society will say these things make your hair healthy because it looks 'pretty'... but there is no basis for this... they put minimal amounts of plant extracts and vitamins in your shampoo to help benefit it, what you don't know is that the amount are so miniscule, and prepared in a fashion that doesn't benefit your hair at all, except for maybe the time you're washing it (if that). It's all a fucking advertising scheme to make money! Can't you see or comprehend that? They create an image from time to time, and push it so that everyone thinks they need to 'be that image' to fit in... it's not because they care about your health or give a fuck about you... use your brain for a few minutes and the answers all become apparent.

Don't do it unless you are one hundred percent committed to the dreads and all they represent.

That is what I've always thought. Remember, that shit is PERMANENT. You can't get your hair dreadlocked and then change your mind 3 months later. You're going to have to cut them off. Someone mentioned brushing them out...but I don't think that's really possible if the dreads are done properly in the first place.
Your hair is gorgeous. I think you should just leave it the way that it is. If you're really craving some change, you should get a drastic haircut and maybe some colour. That's what I just did! Well, I didn't colour it, but I cut it chin length short. Felt really good too.
Let us know what you decide to do!

Haha, Amen. Boxes are limiting. To aspire to be 'normal' seems to be a practice in trapping oneself in mediocrity and from reaching ones full potential. BORING!

just remember, they put wax into your hair to make it dread - so when you are done - you have to cut the hair off.
I had 2 roommates with curly hair who went dred, and after a summer or so, wanted to go back to normal - They were both told the wax could be removed at the time they were getting it done, but it couldn't, and they had to get baldies.

Hey MOTH
I had my hair backcombed by a friend a few years ago. I kept up with the dreads for only 3 months. I loved them, it was really a fun process to watch and do. I washed my scalp once or twice a week with Dr. Bronner's tea tree oil castille soap (it contains no chemicals, just oils). I soon realized that the dandruff I'd had since I was a teenager was more noticeable because I no longer used a blow dryer and it would get blown out of my hair. I was afraid that the dandruff, invisible to others when I wore a bandana, would accumulate inside my dreads and form nasties. So, I cut all my dreads off to 1" length in front of a mirror almost 1.5 years ago.
Whatever you do, who cares. If you take care of the dreads, they will not smell. There is a societal myth about the correlation between hairwashing and overall cleanliness/health. Hair is dead. It doesn't need as much attention as, say, your teeth or any other living part of your body.
Just know that combing them out is impossible. Don't EVER use wax. Roll your dreads everyday when you have an idle moment. It takes a conscious effort sometimes to do this.
I got shit for having dreads, being a white female. I got shit for having my hair shorter than many males.
Who cares?
Even if you don't do the dreads, may I suggest as CherryBom said, cut it all off! It's one of the most liberating feelings! You'll feel naked, free... And then donate it to Locks of Love or something.
