Thinking about dreadlocking my hair.

I have absolutely no experience or knowledge about this process. My hair is naturally curly and falls just above my waist right now. Why do I want to do this? I don't know. Just kinda feel like it.
Any suggestions?

Where can I go to get it done? Do most people do it themselves?
I definitely DO NOT want moldy dreads. EW

Um no lol. Well unless you want some stinky dirty ass hair that method is a waste of time.
You can go to an ethnic hairdresser and get them done. I think this way will end you up with some pretty neat/organized dreads. You know like how black guys look with short dread hair its all perfect and shit.
I'm going to end up dreading my hair I just don't know if I should start it myself or go to one of those hair dressers. I kind of want the more natural look, but I don't want them to look shitty. I'm also not sure if I want to go to a dresser and have my dreads look like a perfect wig or something lol.

Yeah, I know. I guess I'll have to shop around and stuff. I kinda like the way my hair is right now (free) but at the same time I need a change and I don't want to be concerned with my hair so much. I'd just like it to be. What kind of maintenence is involved with dreads?

Moldy dreads? Bah! Never heard of this before... the only way it would happen is if you never let your hair dry and kept it continuosly moist or wet, and had super-thick dreads. I know people with some dreads probably 4 inches in diameter without a problem. If you let your hair dry and don't seal it in a plastic bag, you're probably fine!!
When I first wanted dreads, I decided to go get dreadwax and do the whole backcombing thing to knot my hair... some came out, some didn't... some were so shitty I had to cut them out (luckily didn't do my whole head the first time around.) After the summer right after this, I stopped brushing my hair, and wore it in a pony-tail a lot. This started forming dreads and has been continuosly ever since. It's been about a year and a half, and still ALL of my hair is not completely dreaded, but most of it. Natural dreads like this are good, because for 1, you don't have nasty wax all through your hair for months, which is less than comfortable and makes your hair stiff and greasy. As well, the naturally formed dreads look a lot better than what I've seen with most back-combing... though most people i've seen backcomb don't have a clue what they're doing. If you're planning on dreads, conditioner is an absolute no-go, because it will strip them, and most commercial shampoos, if used regularly are a bad idea because of the chemicals meant to smooth hair out, thus resulting in dread loss or no beginning of dreads in the first place. You can get special shampoo for dreads. Instead of doing this, I just don't shampoo my hair often... maybe once a week, sometimes significantly less (once a month)... but I wash it regurlarly with water, which is perfectly fine to keep your hair clean... my hair never smells, grows mold, or has bugs. People use the stupid commercial shit normally because they're taught to... they don't realize natural hair (and body) oils are beneficial, and there for a reason... they protect one's hair (and skin) from detrimental external factors... people that shampoo/condition regularly will have far less healthier hair than those who don't. The cool thing about dreads is that they soak up much of the excess grease (which is necessary to form them), thus the majority of your hair will not be all shiny and nasty feeling. I can go a long, long time, without shampooing, before my hair gets noticably greasy... before I had dreads, and before I stopped using shampoo on a regular basis, my hair would get abnormally greasy within 24 hours if I didn't wash it with shampoo... Shampoo=bad shit. It's not natural, nor healthy... well, some are, but not commercial crap.
Also, making dreadlocks yourself, or more likely, having someone else do it, can take a long ass time. If your hair is to your waist, your looking at an hour or two of backcombing (done correctly) per dread... and think of how many dreads you might need to do. My preference is to let them form by themselves but not brushing my hair... if your hair is curly to begin with, it'll speed the process up quite a lot.
Good luck

This is the best site about dreads, and I've heard good things about their products online and in person.

I think that site will answer most if not all of your questions..

I tend to think a lot of people look bad with dreads(I'm pretty sure I would). But it might just work out for you.

Certain people just can't pull off dreads.. and a lot of people do them wrong. For example those with really thin hair types (I am one), dreads are possible.. but they would look like shit even if done properly. Much easier to make phatty dreads when you have thick and coarse hair.

Don't dreadlock your hair! Everyone I know that has done it has gotten bored of them after a while, and you wind up losing a ton of hair when you try to brush them out, or wind up just having to chop them off. Your hair is gorgeous the way that it is

Yeah, my second option other then dreads is to just keep growing it out.
I don't know. Maybe I'm bored with life and expected dreadlocks to spice things up a bit.

I highly recommend against it. You have pretty hair already. Don't make it all nasty.

These people are nuts... dreadlocks are beautiful... unless your judging by societal standards, then I can understand why they might not be. Just about everyone I see with dreads, looks great. I think they're one of the most creative, and significant commitment(s)/statement(s) you can make with your body. Do as you feel. You'll know if you're down for it or not. Just so everyone knows... dreads are THE natural hairstyle... hair left alone and untampered are dreads.

What is so creative about making your hair smelly and dirty? I honestly don't get it. If it were some sort of original statement, that's one thing. But 346987345 bajillion suburban white kids have dreadlocks and it just looks retarded.
