Anyone with dreadlocking experience help!
    #7350237 - 08/29/07 11:09 PM (16 years, 7 months ago)

I had some friends help me start dreading using the backcombing method and I have some knotty boy wax and other products to use when it's done. My problem is they had to leave early and im stuck with like 1/3 of my head done haha. Thankfully they did a bit of the back.

My question is when they were doing it they managed to bend and break teeth on my "professional" dread combe. Is this normal? I mean, it really seemed like they were doing it incredibly hard. The ones they did came out nice though.

Anyone have any tips? I've seen some videos and I think I have the general idea.

“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child -- our own two eyes. All is a miracle.” -Thich Nhat Hanh

well I assume you have google the methods before. I've dreaded my hair and one others before. Both combs I used ended up with broken/bent teeth. it sucked. I used a fine tooth metal dog comb I got from pets plus though.

What sort of advice were you looking for. They did the back is what helps. I had dreads for about 2 years, and haven't had them for about 2, but when I did I sort of dreaded my hair as it just sort of was too knotty, I had like one for a summer and than did the rest over the course of a week. haha. the back was sooo horrible. But I didn't mind. I kept them up most of the time so blah blah blah.

because your white means absolutely nothing. I understand where you are coming from, but Traditionally speaking many cultures from the Celts to the Mongols had dreadlocks. They weren't called as such, but the point remains the same.

To answer your question, yes, that is normal. Also, I don't recommend using the wax, it'll just make them gross & gummy, and it won't really save you any time on the way to having REAL locked-up dreads. Just stock up on bandanas and prepare to have your hair look like shit for a year or so.

BTW I'm a white guy with ~3 year old dreads, and I get compliments on them all the time.

Why do some people think only blacks should have dreads?

Historically dreads are common in white europeans.

Quote:

The first known examples of locks date back to ancient dynastic Egypt, where Egyptian royalty and commoners wore locked hairstyles and wigs appeared on bas-reliefs, statuary and other artifacts.[1] Mummified remains of ancient Egyptians with locks, as well as locked wigs, also have been recovered from archaeological sites.[2]

The locked Hindu deity Shiva and his followers were described in the scriptures as "jaTaa", meaning "wearing twisted locks of hair", probably derived from the Dravidian word "caTai", which means to twist or to wrap. According to Roman accounts of the time, the Celts wore dreadlocks as well, describing them as having "hair like snakes". [citation needed] Germanic tribes, the Vikings, the Greeks, the Pacific Ocean peoples, the Naga people and several ascetic groups within various major religions have at times worn their hair in locks. In addition to the Nazirites of Judaism and the Sadhus of Hinduism, there are the Dervishes of Islam and the Coptic Monks of Christianity, among others. The very earliest Christians also may have worn this hairstyle. Particularly noteworthy are descriptions of James the Just, brother of Jesus and first Bishop of Jerusalem, who wore them to his ankles.

I dont believe this is accurate. When I finished my dreads (done by myself), They looked great. Nice tight 1/4 - 1/2 inch dreads, evenly positioned. The wax is good, but only use a very small amount once and awhile, and wash your hair with very hot water to rinse the wax out. Keep palm rolling and balling the ends too. It helps to keep rubber bands at the base, and also at the tip. You wanna roll the tip down around the dread and band it that way(personally I skipped the tips and balled them constantly). Ultimately, palm rolling will make the dread as tight as possible, so do it all the time.

Thats about all I got for now. Oh, I had mine for about two years and shaved them off, I had a problem keeping them dreaded at the base were the new hair grew in.

How to get dredlocks

Step 1) Quit your job.

Step 2) Grow your hair out.

Step 3) Abstain from showering.

Step 4) Collect your own feces in a bucket.

Step 5) Run your own shit through your hair, make it as grimy as possible. Roll it into dreds.

Step 6) Remain abstinent from showering, wear potato sacks for clothes.

Step 7) Now resort to roaming the streets looking like a sketched out tweaker bum.

There you have it, dreds!

dont use wax.

use a dog comb.

swim in the ocean a lot while they are super poofy, and then palm roll them to work the salt in/dry them off.

spray your scalp with a solution of say 20 parts water to 1 part lemon juice (stronger or weaker depending on how it feels) - this helps with the itch that the salt will cause.

patience patience patience.
