Dreadlock Question

hey, well i started dreading my hair about 2 weeks ago and I have a question about maintenance.
Some of the roots of my dreads are really really loose. is there anything other than palm rolling and twisting i should be doing to secure the roots? will they naturally just tighten up as time passes?
anyone have any tips/advice?

hmmm your way about getting dreadlocks is strange. Most dreads dont expect dreads to just come of dreaddome in two weeks.
My locks didnt become locks over night. It took almost a full year.
But i had a philosophy and a meaning behind them. I didn't make them, i didn't try to form them. I just let it grow and let it flow.
You dont want tight roots. You will never have tight roots. Your hair grows from the base ya know... Tight locks pull hair. After two years or so your locks will be solid like the mountain of zion.

Oh no i perfectly realize they are going to take time. That's part of the excitment for me, watching them grow and mature. i just really don't know what to expect with them in the early process as i have only really been in contact with mature beautiful tight dreadlocks.
As for pictures... i'll be sure to post some as soon as i can.

Do what ever you want to.
The more they get wet the stinkier they get. Saltwater/ocean water helps to tighten them. Learn about foods/vitamins that help strengthen your hair.

No, i certainly have not put any wax or tightening spray or any of that shit in my hair. i just kinda sat down one day and knotted some up and knotted more and more and more until my whole head was done.

They'll always be loose for the first .5-1 inch out, it just takes that long to knot up. I'm amazed any part of them is NOT really loose after just a couple weeks. I assume you backcombed to start off? And contrary to AliceDee, I'm pretty sure that sleeping right on your dreads helps.
Good luck!

hmmm see most of them are loose for the first .5-1 inch out but some are like loose 2 inches out... i guess it doesn't make a difference. they ARE baby dreads... I dunno i guess i'm just afraid they are gonna fall apart. like i said i just wanna make sure i'm not doing anything wrong.
and yea i backcombed like the first inch or so and then it was a lot of twisting and pulling and ripping if you know what i mean. I also went to the beach a little bit and have been playing with them QUITE a bit. Don't really have much to do at home so i play with them a lot.

Yea, playing with them is key. That's where I screwed up. I had dreads for 3 months (got them last August 24th) but took them out when the roots were just giving me too much trouble. I'm still kinda frustrated about that too, I really wanted dreads. The roots started to come together at a pace that was just too great for me and it was just not possible to get them to do otherwise. I took them out instead of having my whole scalp becoming one big dread.
That and my scalp has always been trouble. I have to wash my hair/scalp every day or it gets way too oily and it starts to flake/crust by the evening of the second day. I guess I just wasn't cut out to have dreads, I hope they work out for you though, good luck man.

i found in the first few months making a mixture of like one lemon to one litre of water and spraying that on my head helped quel the itch.
as for the roots, well you've seen my dreads Ani, the roots aren't too dreaded, even after almost 2.5 years. put the root between your middle and ring finger, and swirl it around, clockwise, pushing against your scalp. this'll cause the root to get tangled and poofy. then palmroll down towards the root to "compact" some of the poofiness. then repeat. again and again and again. until your arm feels like it is going to fall off
good luck, and as sheik said, one can't overestimate the power of ocean-water.

mine are reaching near the middle of my back. a few more years, and some time living in india and/or senegal in the upcoming years with non-stop ocean access will bring em down to my ass. unless i can't take the freaking heat and humidity and in a moment of crazed weakness, chop them off

my thoughts exectly! if you want to have dreads you have to let go of your relationship with it... just let it be!
the only thing i do to my dreads is pull them apart if they try to form mega dreads... it's been about 10 months now and i'm getting there slowly (i should really go to the beach a few times and see what that does) i kinda wish i didn't go all natural like that for the sole reason that if i gave my self a choice i'd section the dreads diffrently (they knotted twards the back of my head because i'd tie my hair... so if i sectioned them i'd groupe them diffrently ) but the best part of having dreads (for me anyway) is not having to worry about my hair! i can tie it in strage looking ways and not give a fuck anymore
so yeah... just stop caring and a year from today you're gonna say "damn those are some fine looking dreads "

i have 2 cowlicks too, one in the back and the other is effectively 'invisible' i.e. it resides in the left corner of my forehead but a receding hairline has effectively done away with it. the hair across my crown still all goes in one direction (to my right) tho and it sucks.

Hmmm see i guess i see it differently than you guys. For me for some reason it's become like my little pet, the things i take care of. I put a lot of love into them you know? Is pend time with them. I dunno it prolly sounds cheezy but I dunno. My hair feels like a seperate entity growing out of me. It's weird, i'm also really high so i might be getting a little too excited about them and wanting to be very descriptive.
I dunno cause think about it, they change and mature with time so it kinda is alive in it's own way. Anywho... yea i don't have anything else to say.

I would suggest against any palm rolling and general playing. Palm rolling is pretty rough on already stressed hair. I found that when mine were first locking, I would run my fingers through them to separate them and end up breaking off loose hairs that had just knotted. This left me later on with fat dreaded ends and skinny, and I mean skinny, like a single hair holding them to my scalp type of of locks. I have been really good this past few months and have not played with the back ones at all and noticed the other day that I have some new locks starting out of loose hair. Its a process, its a journey, its very spiritual to me and I take it a little serious. Im not Rastafarian, or Hindu or a Sufi, although before I locked my hair I did some research on the roots of them. In some cultures they are said to hold spiritual energy with the the head and body. To me its a little of each culture, I lock my hair because I do not care for my appearance, nor care if people like me for my looks or not. Some people do them as a fashion statement, my reasons are entirely the opposite, I let it grow, do not comb it and just let them do their thing, it is very natural. Although I have found that wearing a hat can certainly help knot loose hairs at the base. In a few places, 2, 3 and even 4 locks have begun to knot together at the base and I imagine in a few months time I will have the start of some very thick locks. Anyway this is just my 2 cents, enjoy your journey Ani, you'll never forget it

"This left me later on with fat dreaded ends and skinny, and I mean skinny, like a single hair holding them to my scalp type of of locks." That's what i'm afraid of.
I didn't i guess realize also how much maybe you're supposed to let it go it's course. A friend of mine is always telling me like "oh you gotta do this, otherwise this is gonna happen" and keeps like obsessing about the way i should be working on them and what not. I guess i lost track of the "let them do it's own thing" idea behind it.
Well i certainly wouldn't like to call them a fashion statement. i mean yea i think they look cool and all but yea i can't say that i would do something soooo... hmmm extreme and long term to my hair just cause it looks cool you know?
They are kind of a reminder to me that i can be what i want, that i don't have to fit a mold. And i kind of see them as a work of art too. Oscar Wilde says "one should either make art or wear art" I feel like i'm doing both. I mean think about it, they are beautiful and they challenge peoples' beliefs. shit i gotta get ready for work... I'll continue this later.
