While this is completely unrelated to chicks, it is related to the language barrier. I was hired at my neuroscience internship because there are two post docs from Mexico who had joined the lab recently, and I speak some Spanish. I was hired and it turned out I forgot a lot of my Spanish, but I remembered enough to help the researchers out. When I first met them they could barely speak any English. They didn't even know how to say "How do you say..." Within 6 months I was having conversations with them in English. About a year later they have no problems speaking English and speak it with each other where as they used to always speak Spanish.

But if the chick is living in Italy, she probably won't pick up on the English. Not being able to talk to people sucks. You'd be surprised how quickly people learn the language in a total immersion scenario.
