Hitchhiking.
    #9912707 -

Who loves the open road and getting rides from strangers, getting to know them, and just being free?

Anyone ever hitchhiked?

I'm setting out here in the next week or two.

Any places I should go? Travel tips?

Discuss.

Personally... I prefer to NOT get raped in every orifice by strangers and be left for dead in a ditch somewhere...

But thats just me.

I've only hitchhiked once while backpacking, and I would only pick up an obvious backpacker.

I'd head south until it gets warmer.

I've never hitch-hiked, but I'm thinking of trainhopping this summer.

Yeah I like that kind of freedom.

I hitchhiked from BC, Canada to Seattle last year and it was crazy man.
You meet all kinds of cool and weird people. It's one of the best way to travel from my opinion.

You should go where you want too, there's no limits.

Hitchhiking in Alberta, Canada was amazing. Right in nature, elks in the middle of the street and bears. I slept in the wild, which was kinda scary at night ( You have to hide all food )

The trick is to be friendly and open with the people who offer you the ride, they took you after all to have company or share stuffs.

I had this ride from this guy that just wanted to talk to me that his woman left him...
You just have to listen ( Or pretend... )

One thing I was always scared was the put my backpack in the trunk, I always thought they would leave with it, so be careful, and don't accept all rides. Drunks or weirdos.

Anyways,

Enjoy

Get a conceal and carry permit and keep a small gun hidden on your person.

Key word: hidden.

Its not for intimidation, it won't make anyone uncomfortable if they don't know you have it. But if everything goes pear shaped and you wish you had one, you'll REALLY WISH YOU HAD ONE.

I started out hitchhiking 4 hours to Vancouver when i was 15.. first time going to warped tour. I've done that trip easily 2 dozen times in the next 7 years.

Hitch hiked to the kootenays multiple x's.

also been down the sunshine coast..

Hitched from Calgary to Toronto and then Niagra Falls, Buffalo New York and then to West Virginia, then to Florida, then up to North Dakota (i think!?) and then rode trains zig zagging across the states back to Seattle.

Good times - i found it really difficult in the States though, the cops were ALWAYS on my ass threatening to arrest me + it was pretty scary actually.

One time i was shitting at a truck stop and a trucker was peeping in the crack at me - fuckin' weird.

Never been hassled in the states.

People are often very generous.

But when your travelling for a long period of time, or regularily i get sick of telling the same old story about my life. I prefer riding trains.

Check out Digihitch.com forums for info.

In Canada check out Nelson, in the US check out Ashville north carolina.

thats all i got.

madseason is the only person to listen to in this thread.

Hitch hiking is perfectly safe, just use your judgement.

It is also one of the most interesting ways to travel, in my opinion.

I also hitchhiked in South America this past summer.

I have NEVER heard of anyone who was threatened hitch hiking, and i know of at least 30 or 40 people who hitchhike.

The odds are slightly worse if your female.

Remember you are in control, just grab the wheel if shit goes hairy. or carry a box cutter and slash at the veins inside the arms. Lots of blood will freak the driver out and give you a get away...

But seriously... that shits from the movies.

Go out and have a good time. No worries!

The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to selfishness;
From selfishness to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage.

that's all good till you leave the state and the laws change.  Being a hitchhiker tends to draw the police's attention.

I've hitched many times before.

I hitchhiked all over the West last summer. Amazing experience.

This time, I'm thinking of heading south, to where the weather is fair. I'm in Seattle and it's rain every other day.
