You're absolutely right and that's what I keep tellin myself. I got 1 shot before getting all settled down into the daily grind of work.
Did you go over with a certain amount of money? Or are you goin places, workin a bit and makin some cash before movin on?
I was wondering how that works with travel visa's and whatnot.

i just came with money. when i work, it's only for room and board. so i'm afraid i can't really offer any advice on how to get under the table money.
i'm also not the person to ask about visas. i didn't even get one. i just came over with a passport and a one-way ticket. i'm six month overstayed right now.

i dunno about in the states. but here it varies between countries. for the most part, it's fine so long as you're on a small road, an on-ramp to a highway, at a toll place, or asking in gas stations/rest stops.

Awesome! It's always been a fantasy of mine to pick up a hitchhiker. Maybe I'll give in the next time I see someone who needs a ride.

one thing that i HAVE to say is this:
NEVER turn down a ride. you do not know how long it will be till you get another ride. trust me. this may seem like "hobo bullshit" but trust me its much better to be ONE EXIT down the road, than at your current spot..........
trust me.you can get fucked over hardcore, by turning down rides, especially close to night, its happened so many times to me b4 its not even funny. just take that next ride (and avoid a midnight bust by a cop......trust me)
i totally disagree. i keep a road map and i think strategically. i consider how hard it is to hitch in that area, the sort of place they'd drop me off at, etc. i don't often turn down rides, but sometimes you have to. you don't want to get left in a place you know you'd have a shit of a time trying to get your next ride.
see thats exactly what i mean by "hobo knowledge"... what may work for one person totally doesn't work for another. just follow your heart is really the only thing you need to know about hitchhiking/bumming in general.
from experience though, ive been stranded before in places because they were only taking me a short distance, and I turned down the ride...you are always going to be on the same road, so the same cars are going to be seeing you. just 1 mile down the road, is just 1 mile you dont have to walk. just sayin.
it is preferable to be nearer to bigger towns because there will be more exiting traffic, but if its a choice between being in 1 spot for however longer, and being 2-3 exits down, i will always go 2-3 exits down. its just screwed me so many times.
the one time when I would turn down a ride, is if the person can only get you to an exit with a prison nearby. prisons tottally screw you out of getting rides.

so TRB - was talkin to my friend actually about what the deal is with expired visas and travelling and whatnot. They'll see you stayed past the expiration date when you go to fly back to America prolly. I mean at that point youre leaving anyway but IDK there may be some repercussions for it.

Overstay a visa and on your way out they will stamp your passport to prevent you from future re-entry, for a period of time up to the discretion of the border agent. My girlfriend is Israeli, Jews know all about that overstay business, lol.

i'm not flying out from within the schengen. i'm going to go into the UK first, where i don't have any sort of expired stamp. it's just a matter of luck as to whether or not my passport gets scrutinized passing into the border. i've talked to people who say sometimes they check closely, other times they don't even flip past the ID part of the passport. so we'll see.
and if they ban me from reentry for 5 years, oh fuckin' well. haha. i've seen plenty of the schengen. rather intimately. i've got several other foreign lands at the top of my list to visit next.

I think I'm goign to do this when I'm done with school. My friend will be working in singapore by then. I'm gunna sell my car, get together some cash, and get to singapore. From there, work where shes working if I can, then head over to mainland and get up towards Russia and then from there head back across Europe. That way I don't need to go through the middle east. IDK so many ideas. I don't even know... haha.
