i picked up my first hitchhiker tonight.
    #10545570 -

i only drove him about half a mile, but a first's a first.  he gave me 3 pairs of shitty sunglasses.  and i felt like a good samaritan.

i feel like hitchhiking isn't especially effective in America's society of fear.  but it's a shame.  it's nice to help people.

I always pick up hitchhikers.  I've never felt uncomfortable with anyone I've ever picked up.  Sure, some were weird, and some were obnoxious, but never threatening.  Hell, this one time a guy insisted that he packed my entire car-ashtray with weed in repayment for the ride.

I'm far from selfless by any stretch of the imagination, but I do try to keep a couple quotes in my head that help me be the person I would like to be -

Kindness begets kindness - Greek Proverb (another way of saying Karma, really)
You must be the change you want to see in the world - Ghandi (ie., if you're an asshole, how can you expect the rest of the world to be nice?)

Once there was a lady, and she was drivin somewhere, she passed a hitchhiker, very odd looking, one I wouldn't pick up,and her car broke down 72 miles later, she had to get it towed and fixed at a local gas station. Oddly enough right across the street was the very same hitchhiker she saw earlier. She was creeped out, and paid the mechanic and the mechanic said wuts wrong, she said, theres a hitchhiker over there, then she looked back and the man was gone, the mechanic thought she was loco. She headed back on her way to her destination, she drove and drove, for nearly every 30-50 miles she drove, she would see that same hitchhiker, she was getting fucking scared and paranoid now.

anyway, she got all scared and paranoid, eventually she ran into some dude who used to be in the army or some shit, so it made her feel safer, she was getting all freaked out as she was telling her story to the guy, the guy wanting to penetrate the seemingly psychotic bitch, tagged along for a ride. She felt better, until as she was driving, she saw the SAME HITCHHIKER!.

then she tried to run him over with her car, but she "fuck i missed"
the hitchhiker. the solder guy, was like HOLY SHIT WTF R U DOING.
shes like, im trying to run over that hitchhiker, so he will stop following me, the soldier guy was like fuck this, im out of here.

as soon as the guy left, the women was just sittin there, bein all scared, she tried to start her car but she FAILED. she gets to a telephone booth to call her mother, someone answers the phone only to tell her that her mother was in the hospital due to stress over the fact her daughter was killed in a car wreck 6 days ago.

heres the actual story i got from here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitch-Hiker_(The_Twilight_Zone)

The story begins with a woman, Nan Adams, who has been in a car accident on a cross-country road trip from New York to Los Angeles. A mechanic puts a spare tire on her car, and then leads her to the nearest town to fix it properly. Just before she leaves, she notices a strange-looking man hitchhiking. Unnerved, she drives away quickly. As it turns out, this is the first of many times that she will see the same man, always hitch-hiking and wanting her to pick him up. She becomes increasingly frightened of him, and when she is stuck on a railroad crossing and nearly hit by a train, she becomes convinced that the hitch-hiker is trying to kill her. She continues to drive, becoming more and more afraid, stopping only when necessary; but every time she does, the man is there.

When she ends up stranded in New Mexico, she meets a different man, a sailor on his way back from his leave and returning to his ship in San Diego. Eager for protection from the hitch-hiker she's been seeing, she offers to drive the sailor to San Diego herself. However, she is still paranoid about the hitch-hiker, and when she sees him on the road and tries to run him over, the sailor, who can't see him, begins to fear for her sanity and leaves her. In Arizona, Nan stops to call her mother. However, the woman who answers the phone, Mrs. Whitney, says that Mrs. Adams is in the hospital: She had a nervous breakdown after finding out that her daughter, Nan, was killed in an auto accident in Pennsylvania six days ago, when the car she was driving blew a tire and overturned. At this point, Nan realizes the truth: The hitch-hiker is not a man who wants her to die, but rather, the personification of death itself, just patiently and persistently waiting for her to realize that she has been dead all along.

"I believe you're going...my way?" he inquires from the back seat, almost friendly.

As Nan accepts her fate, Rod Serling narrates the final lines.

Nan Adams, age twenty-seven. She was driving to California, to Los Angeles. She didn't make it. There was a detour, through the Twilight Zone.
