Hitchhiking

I'm considering taking a trip this weekend or the next, but don't know
where to start (what to bring, where to find a ride, how to avoid giving
blowjobs...). Does anyone have any tips, tricks, or stories to share?

Never done it. Never will.

Advice: Take a gun, take a sharp dagger, take brass knuckles, take a baton, take mace, and mmmm oh yea put your thumb out.

Edit: make sure the dagger has a blood goudge

my friend and I (two drugged, college guys) were canoeing for a week or so down a river... we drove the canoes up to the start of the river and stashed it in the woods. We drove downstream, about 220 miles by country highway, to a County Park where the river had a little waterfall that we were scared of going over.

I made a sign (on the back of a beer box) "Need Ride 2 Canoe", we got picked up twice by some really nice country folk (middle age men). We walked a bit in between rides, but nothing more than a mile total. First one drove us as far as he was going, another drove us right to our canoe, totally past his destination.

I was on so many drugs that it was just great... TOTALLY UNSAFE, but a marvelous experience

I have never personally hitch hiked, but I have talked to some seasoned veterans and they gave me some tips.

Number one, bring the herb with you. The person picking you up is likely someone who likes to smoke. Good way to start a convo, hey you want some pot?

Number two, shave and look respectable. Make a sign with your destination on it. That way you look more organised (therefore more respectable).

Number three, carry your stuff in nifty sporting goods packsacks. That way you'll look like a hiker/skier/snowboarder or something. If you just look like a dude who wants a free ride to point b, less people will want to pick you up.

And four (though this isn't always possible), travel with a woman.

great advice, I figured some of that out myself, but definitely a good place to start
