I used to do all kinds of hitchhiking around Ontario when I was a teenager. I mostly got picked up by men. Only one pervert that I can think of, and when I told him to let me out he did. I was pretty lucky.
Most of them were rebel dads. They would say things like "Do your parents know what you are up to?" and usually smoke weed with me. Many of them told me that they had daughters who were my age and just wanted to help.
I got to ride in a big transport truck once...another time I got to ride in a sexy little corvette convertible. I hitched a ride across Canada once with a tree planter guy from BC. He gave me benzos. Good guy tho. I wonder whatever happened to him?
I got picked up by a cool chick once, too. She was driving a little beater car and she told me that picks up hitchers all the time, but only girls. We smoked doobies and ended up having a great talk. She was awesome. I don't remember her name.
Now that I am all grown up, I know better...and would never hitchhike. Unless I was totally stranded and stuck. But I don't find myself in those kind of situations so much these days.

I actually got really sick from taking them, and he helped me get better. We got company paid hotel rooms all the way with two beds and he was very respectful. Not every human being on this planet is a scumbag.

but i found this on stumble one day. thought it was amazing: http://www.codysmart.com/hitchhiking.html

why the HELL can't anyone be safe hiking alone anymore? especially females? this is fucking ridiculous.. hiking is one of the biggest ways to get away from everyone and everything.. now it's just too dangerous.

I've picked up hitchhikers a couple of times (mostly in the rain).
I hitched once. The guy was pretty young and drove like a maniac. At every red light we took shots of bourbon and on the way we stopped to see some graffiti he did (very nice work) and when I got home I paid him by smoking him out.

Yeah I wouldn't mind doing it with a mate, a good way to see a country cheaply and meet lots of the "natives".

heres a question for all of you. who would get away with it longer serrial killer hitch hiking and killing the people who pick him up or serrial killer killing hitch hikers he picks up?
and on a side note once i picked up some hippy dude from fort bragg once ( ostly cus he had a kitten with him) and he was a super chill guy. smoked me out. i showed him some sights. then drove way out of my way to get him on the right track home.
there are cool people out there

I was going on a two hour drive once to a big city... I think it was for a party. Anyway, my girlfriend at the time was driving and she's like "this dude seems okay and is going where we're going, let's take him."
So we did. Cleared all the valuables out of the backseat and let him ride. He was a fairly cool guy, obviously a drug user but he was our age at the time. He offered us a joint and I was all for it but she didn't want to smoke up her car so we didn't end up partaking. At the end of the ride, bought him a sandwich and said goodbye and good luck.
Not a bad experience.
Personally I've never INTENDED to hitchhike but I've accepted rides from people on my way to work.
Once was from a cop and I was totally baked, like as in I'd JUST finished smoking five minutes before he pulled up. I had a pipe and an eighth in my pocket but I took the ride anyway. He was a really cool guy it turned out. Talked to him about being a cop for a while and then got dropped off at work.
One of the few "good" cops I've met.
Another time I got a ride from some dude who was obviously gay, about forty and pretty cool. I gave him a card for a free drink at the coffeeshop I worked at at the time.
AND one last experience of note, I got picked up by a guy who as it turned out lived in and OWNED the subdivision I was living in and he was really cool, asked why I was walking and offered to sell me an old Mercedes he had for like half off market price. I looked at it and it was in NICE condition with ALL the paperwork for repairs and everything. It was an amazing offer but I opted to buy a moped instead.
I'd like to hitchhike across the US someday.

If I got to walk I will. I'll even throw up a thumb from time to time. I pick up hitchhikers when my mood feels like it. Haven't done it for a while. But I will probably loose my license and be forced back to prior modes of transport.
if i pick people up they often get me high or throw me a couple bucks, normally pretty cool.
One time i was driving cross country and got to this crazy cool reservoir in the mountains that has hot springs coming down into the res. When ever I'm in the area I'll camp out. Well this was around this time of year. Just got through a bad storm in Idaho drove all day through up into the cascades. As I was pulling into the service road for the res round 2am, i found a man walking down the street wearing a bear skin. I pulled over and he asked if i was heading to the springs. Now this is in the middle of know where. He asked if his brother could come too. I said sure he showed me the skin and said this is my brother. Do you want to be reborn to night? He said come with us and be reborn tonight in the springs. I noticed he was only wearing wool socks and it was raining. He was a really nice guy. I said I'll go and be reborn in the morning. I'll pass tonight and dropped him off at the trail head. I camped out down the road by the river. The next morning I woke up to go take the dog and check out the hot springs. Just a 1/4 mile up the trail. Real nice place. Has been used for a thousand some years. But on the trail as I was walking I started finding bits and pieces of the bear. A claw here a tuff of fur and leather there. Just placed along the trail.
At the spring the dudes clothes were there placed by a tree. He wasn't around. He was just gone, naked into the woods. So i got into the spings and just lounged around. It was almost surreal.

the driver could probable go longer w/o being caught
the hitchhiker would have a steady stream of victims, but "his" killing pattern would most likely leave a trail.
the driver would have fewer victims but I'm sure "he" would be harder to track, not to mention the people "he" kills could probably go missing for sometime before anyone notices

Yeah, there is fucking INCREDIBLE people about the roads.
There this modern paradigm our culture has that all hitching is bad, and on so many levels. Movies like "The Hitcher" and pop culture don't help.
If you want to have a profound, liberating, mind-opening experience, there is nothing like a good week, month, year long hitch. I am so serious.

I've been hitching since i was 16. Mostly to Vancouver and back, but i also hitched a ride from calgary to toronto.
Hitching in the states sucks, its illegal in most states, state troopers are pricks. I had a hell of a time hitching from florida to vancouver, so i mostly took trains.
I've met many super cool people hitching who kick me down drinks/food/money - most just want an ear to listen, or someone to keep them awake for a long drive. Most people that pick me up are male, and have hitched before. I've found since ive been 21 (im 22 now) that hitching is pretty hard.. I wonder if i lost my innocence?
I've had rides smoke joints and give me cocaine before. (this is very common.)
I get many rides with "spiritual" people.
Id rather ride a train or a bus now a days, im tired of telling the same old story when hitching, also tired of seeing cars pass me by.

That's really too bad. I'm only 18 and I never thought of how it'd be in a few years. Well I have, but not the reality of it, I guess.
But, I totally feel you on the whole same story thing. It can get so repetitious.
Do you enjoy hopping trains? I have a cousin who prefers that over a hitch ANY day.

yeah ive picked up hitchhikers and also gotten lots of rides, mostly in northern california. you can get raped/murdered anywhere, and besides, if someone tries to murder you when you are going 80 down the freeway, and a struggle ensues... its just not smart, you'll crash and both die.
i got picked up by this girl, she had one of those automatic gps map things, i dunno what they are called, and she told a story about someone who had one of the talking ones. it said "take a left here" and the person swung the steeringwheel and they went flying over the curb and into a store.

last i hitched was i think july. my girlfriend and i just did a short one from san fransisco to big sur. it was rad, we even got a ride in a convertible. then we got to big sur and snorted about 40 + mgs of 2 cb.... it was too intense, we couldnt even move for about 3 hours, not a good trip. lol, i kinda have a fear of needles and thought the all of the dried pines on the floor were needles. hehe. but i also did reach this...... place i get to on high doses..... with 3 peaceful beings sitting cross legged and communicating to me that it wasnt time yet and not this time.

when i was 19 i went to europe for travel and hitched a little around spain. this one time, it was late april, andalucia, and the weather showed it. it had been raining on and off all day. i was poor and the only thing that i had on my mind all day were these bomb looking ice creams i'd seen in malaga. anyways, like i said, the weather was rather poor, mostly gray, definitive clouds looming over the wheat covered country side, with the occaisional radiant burst of sun rays hitting the far off lands. i wasnt hithin anywhere in particular, just going vaguely. i'd been picked up by an off duty cop going home who gave me candy, picked up by farmers and fishers who'd never left southern spain, let alone europe, been picked up by motorcycle, all in the course of a single day.... but mostly, i remember the girl....it was and stays one of the most emotional days of my life. i got let off near sunset in a small hardly-pass-for-a-town town, mostly just a road with a few stores. the first place that was open, i walked in. i ordered the ice cream i'd wanted all day and wolfed it down. i asked for tap water and thats it. after beating around the bush, i got the balls to ask the barkeep who owned the land behind the bar, it was a big farm, by the way. instantly, the lady asks, with out any hesitation, why? do you need a place to sleep? i reply with shocked eyes that yeah, id love one. she gives me a spot to set up my tent and i give her my thanks. i get inside and start writing in my journal. i was a bit emotional at the time, i kinda took off to europe cause id walked in on my gf of 2 years in bed with someone else. i was all set up in my tent when i hear a mans voice yelling. shit, i thought, he's prolly gonna kick me out. and so i peak out, and theres 2 men and a little girl about 10 feet from my tent. the little girl, not older then 7, 8 looks up at papa and he says its alright, go on, and leads her in the right direction. the little girl runs up and hands me a brown baggie with a bottle of juice. her shyness has her running back to papas side, and i say thank you very much for your kindness, and he just waves and says good night, and they walk away. inside the tent i open the bag. it had water, sandwich, fruits, veg, a whole fucking meal, man. could you believe that shit? good people? fuck, i started to cry, and right then, i shit you not, the rain came....

haha i think the first time i hitched, id gotten in a fight with my old man, i think i was 17, and i tried hitchin up north from LA.... LA is hard to hitch out of, by the way. this guy picks me up in an old pick up, but made me lie down in the bed because his dog was up front and "ole scruffy here, he dont like strangers too much". but he kept passing the whiskey from the front right on back to me. when he dropped me off, he handed me a 20. ahhh life.

Yeah, I totally noticed. So you're living in Bay area apparently?
I'm hitching on down to San Francisco in April to see my friend at the Art Academy.
What's the hitch down there like?
Oh, have you ever travelled 101? I mean, I've biked down it to San Francisco, but, never hitched it.

i'd be afraid. people go pretty fast in their cars on that road. there never seems like enough room for bikers

Well, sometimes it is slim for sure. But, we did it, me and my cousin.
We spent more time in the water than we did on the road.

damn that seems like an epic ride! i heart riding bikes. but should be a piece of cake. i saw on a show that the stretch between oregon and the bay is the most hitched in the country. no doubt its the easiest from what i know. i ve just moved out to london, but ill hopefully be living back in berkeley end of may. if you need a place to crash in the bay, ill probably have you covered. ill do my best to make sure you have fun.

why the HELL can't anyone be safe hiking alone anymore? especially females? this is fucking ridiculous.. hiking is one of the biggest ways to get away from everyone and everything.. now it's just too dangerous.
its really not any more dangerous then back in the day. hell, id even say less. i mean, do you have a cell phone? that might help if your a girl. ya know before yout get in a call text the lic # to a friend. but hey, if your in ore, i might be passing through there in may. you could come with me to the bay.

Yeah, I don't have a cell-phone, but, that is definitely a nice insurance on your safety.
I've even heard from fellow hitchers to always do that.
Hitching is surprisingly, VERY safe, if you're smart, polite and have enough will.

the only time i've ever had close to a problem, i was stuck hitchin out of santa barbara, hell of a place to try and get a ride, took me all morning. i decided to just walk around the streets with a sign say san fransisco and after a few hours, some guy driving by in a shady car does a double look at me, busts a bitch, and tells me he could give me a lift as far as this n that up the coast. i was a little sketched out, but said fuck it. this guy was from out of town, and like 40 and bald and all trying to impress me by calling actors and actresses by their first name "oh yeah my buddy leo, oh you probably know him as leonardo dicaprio...." whatever buddy. anyways, i had quit blazing for a couple of weeks, which back then was a loooong time, and this dude busts out his nug jar and he's all yeaaaaaah look at this, good shit huh? it was aight. anyway, guy starts bustin out his rolling kit, scissors, papers, crutch, etc. and i ask if he wants me to roll it. he rolls the most beutiful jay ever, one handed, while driving along the cali coast....awesome. So im stoned, and guy starts touching me, right? he says stuff like "you play volleyball? you feel like you do" while stroking my thigh. at first i was like, nah its weed paranoia. after a few times though, i tell myself that if he does it again, im going to ask to get dropped off. i look at the door though, and realize that theirs no door handle. uh oh. so i reach for my knife, just in case. and sure enough, guy leaves his hand on my thigh for too long. i say, aw man right heres fine. its like no where man, some deserted strech of coast haha. guy pulls over and gives me his number, has to open the door from outside though. and thats it! no problem! the best part though, i was stoned for the first time in a couple of weeks, and im hungry, no stores, and i decide to take a walk up this little road. lemme tell you, this shit was a PERFECT spring day. Deep electric blue skies, a couple of white definitive clouds puffing by, bright rolling green hills until the eyes could see. i was sooooo fucking happy. there were even cows with bells just eating grass all around me. i couldnt stop grinning. i hitched back down to the beach with a nice family, and when i got there, i just dropped my bag, got naked and started running up and down, jumping and swimming. it was the shit. no sirree, you cant get an experience like that through a travel agent.
