hitched a ride
    #4557323 -

So, my good friend asked for me to fill in for him at work. His girlfriend is living tomorrow for school and they are basically ending/postponing their relationship. They both wanted one more night together. So, of course, I gladly worked for him (even though I am pushing overtime this week - which aint bad).

He works at a different store all the way the across town (about 10 miles), so I had to drive. I usually just bike it. I hadnt driven in a few weeks and the tank was on empty. I was running late (he called me at the last minute while I was running errands) so I didnt have time to stop at the gas station. I thought I'd just go on the way back.

Made it to work fine, but as I was leaving tonight, I totally stalled out. I had to push the car for several blocks to the nearest parking lot. I kicked myself in the ass for not stopping to fill the tank.

So, I lit up a cigarette and said fuck it & just started walking to the nearest gas station (no idea where it was). I was walking for about 30 mins with my thumbup. At least 100 cars zoomed past me. One car of teenagers teared past me and they yelled "Faggot!."

Later on, this minivan pulled up and the dude asked if I needed help. I ran up to his car and told him the situation. He gladly said he'd give me a lift to the nearest gas station and then back to my car.

The guy was young - a volin teacher. Very quiet. We talked - I told him how I used to teach social studies.

I filled his tank up with gas and bought him a Gatorade despite his protests. He dropped me off and I gave him my cell number and said if he ever needed anything to just call.

What a cool dude.

I missed my plans for tonight, but it's all good - I know there are some good people out there who arent afraid of helping out strangers.

I'm glad to hear there are still some decent people out and about.

I hate teenagers who yell shit out their cars at pedestrians/bikers. It's always some 16 year old punk who just got his license, you know he's elbowing his friend next to him "durrrr, check this out, man! har har har"

I'm desensitized to it now, I just keep riding like I didn't hear a thing. People yell shit at me all the time when I'm riding my bike. It's not always something bad though :smirk:

I've succesfully pissed people off before. Some dude yelled something at me when I was skateboarding. I gave this individual two enthusiastic thumbs up but he didn't seem to appreciate them. He yelled "Hey, fuck you, man!!!" and sped off.

I won!

yeah I get that shit all time - I ride my bike everywhere. To/from work I have to wear a dress shirt & slacks - I guess I look like a Missionary or something.

Whenever people yell vulgarity at me, I tell them to pull over come talk to me. I've never had anyone pull over.

They probably thought I was insane. One time it was a car full of kids who could have easily kicked the shit out of me, but they kept driving.

Sometime's it's better to not be crazy but let others think you are.

Whenever I'm feeling frisky and I see someone on the side of the road walking, I calmly and politely tell them to get a horse, then drive off. Nobody's gotten mad yet, but it's fun to see some really confused looks.

I hitch decent distances all the time - ive had people buy me meals, give me beer, drugs, money, a headlamp, water, books... places to stay, etc.

I've never really had a bad experience and hitched over 4000km this summer alone.

People are good.

Wow!

Respect, man. I don't have much experience with hitchhiking, but I travelled a couple of thousand kilometers to Holland and back this summer. Quite an adventure with a pinch of extreme.

Also, I read in the article about hitchhiking in Wikipedia that it's banned in the states of Utah, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Nevada. I have also read that it's illegal for truckers to pick up hitchhikers in Russia, where the law is based on safety issues ("hitchhikers" killing truckers and stealing the cargo etc.). What are they afraid of in the abovementioned states? The Vanishing Hitchhiker or is the criminal situation there as bad as in Russia which I find hard to believe?

It is illegal in more states than that.. Virginia, Florida and Maryland that I know of.
