Have any of you done it? Another girl and I were talking about hitching to the mountains this weekend. Is it totally stupid? I suggested we bring a male companion. What's the word folks? How do I do it, how do I do it safely?

I don't know what it is like to hitch-hike as two women in terms of safety.
I can say with certainty that it is 1,000 times easier to hitch a ride as a man if there is a woman with you.

In my experience in this day and age... only females can pull it off with any regularity.. or a guy if a female is with him. You can figure that one out I'm sure. Guys do get picked up, but it usually takes about 500 times longer than it does for a female. I guess it depends on your area too. A lot of people advise against females hitchhiking without a male with them.. I can see the sense in that.. but that doesn't mean females can't hitch by themselves if they are smart. But there's no question that girls get picked up about 50 times faster than guys. I have hitchhiked solo many times, and sometimes it takes 1 hour or more before someone stops. The first time I tried hitchiking with a girl... TWO people stopped in the first 10 seconds. That's generally how it works.
Anyway.. in general most people who pick up hitchhikers tend to be pretty trustworthy and helpful people. But be careful who you get in a car with, there are some real freaks out there. Trust your instincts. And maybe back up your instincts with some bear mace. Nothing wrong with refusing a ride if you get bad vibes from someone. I'd say if you brought a male companion that would lessen the chances of one of those freaks picking you up, but it would also lessen the chances of anyone picking you up as most people aren't going to pick up THREE hitchhikers. I said most people now. But that doesn't mean much.. because most people don't stop for hitchhikers in the first place. You may get lucky and some nice old man in a conversion van will stop or something, heh.

i am a man and have hitched about twenty times by myself and a few times with my cats. i have been picked up by a guy who looked like a bear and drove around to his beehives all over the country. he scared me a little but nothing bad happened. two beautiful girls picked me up once, a gay couple once, some communist party folks once, christians,an old anarchist, surfer dudes, a mother and her two daughters, some pot smoking kids. i have turned down a few rides too and you should if you feel any sort of fear. one guy had a mullet and a rebel flag in his car and he kept trying to talk me into going with him, no way. another time this wealthy creepy arab tried to pick me up and i felt like he would have tried to rape me. only take rides from friendly people. once my wife and i blew a tire way out in the bohemian gold mines and needed to get into town and back out to change the tire. this old man and his dog picked us up and he drank beer the whole way and almost drove off the road but we stayed with him and he even drove us back to our vehicle after fixing the tire. don't be desperate for a ride, go with your gut instincts. all of my hitchhiking was done in oregon too so it might be worse in north carolina.

I'm pretty much of the opinion that it is a stupid idea and it will never come to be. Thirty years ago, I probably would have, but now? People are too scared to pick up hitchhikers and the people that aren't, well, you have to watch out for some of them.

Two females hitch hiking? In North Carolina? That may not end well. It could go just great, but its not exactly a certain thing.
Granted, I'm not from around there, but the last time we drove through, we kept those doors locked. Find a rideshare program online or something get matched up for a trip. At least you'll see the person coming and can communicate with them a little first.

I've hitched hundreds of rides, it's fun. Do carry a knife and be ready to use it just in case. I never needed to. Being male can have its advantages, I've had quite a few gay guys pick me up and give me their numbers. One of the strangest experiences was getting a ride from this junkie who was on his way to D.C. to pick up some smack. The dude was all over the road, it was a white knuckle 3 hour ride. The funny thing was, he was missing a leg and had a prosthetic because he'd shot up into it so much that it became infected and was amputated. Because he was disabled, he was put on disability and given all kinds of meds which he sold to go buy more heroin every month. That's where your tax dollars go!
