I've done a lot of hitchhiking and a little train hopping in the US. Hitchhiking in the east coast is definitely slower and spottier than the west coast but I've done quite a bit of it there successfully. Upstate NY is pretty good. For speed stick to the interstates - you can hitch on on-ramps standing prior to the "no pedestrians" sign. There are some interstates that it is illegal to hitch on - Mass Pike for example. You should bring at least a sleeping bag and a tarp with you and I second that you're bringing way too much clothing (but fresh socks are important) and should bring a hiking pack instead of a suitcase. Something I've heard and have found to be true is "the road provides."
Good Luck

I haven't seen a hitch hiker in years, they used to be common.

Hitchhike up to humboldt county. Then just go to Arcata and ask anyone in the center for what you would like. Fun area especially next month psi cyan mushrooms start growing. They grow everywhere out here. Mainly next to roads where alder trees are.

LMAO it's funny you say this because I'm actually thinking about seeing how difficult it would be for me to get passport and travel up there. I can only imagine how cold it is in Canada though ay?
It's warm and nice from June - September but pretty much from October - May you might as well consider it cold. From late November - early March it can be bitter cold with tons of snow.
If you do make it up here anytime shoot me a and I'll burn you a joint or something!
Also dude whatever you do I bet it'll be a blast! I never hitch hiked very far or for very long but all thru high school before I bought my first car I hitch hiked everywhere I went. It's a great experience you can meet some cool fuckin people; you can also meet some crazy people with crazy stories!

Definitely the people you meet and the adventure are the best parts of it - you get to see that there ARE many really good people out there. Doing it has really changed my view of humanity.

Oh but also - prepare to be illegally searched by law enforcement officers. Hitchhiking has also changed my view of cops - lots of assholes out there sure, but they overall have been pretty cool to me out on the road.

There used to be a show on hbo called the hitchhiker. He never got a ride, just talked. I can't recall the last time I saw a hiker. I bet this is a bad area to try it. Too many robberies and carjackings as it is, mostly done by the usual suspects.

You are very incorrect on that Zappa. It's illegal to be a pedestrian on the highway but not on secondary roads and as long as you are not on the actual roadway you're usually not breaking any law. Police can do a "Terry patdown" on anyone but not a search without probable cause.

Overview of hitchhiking laws by state. Green: Hitchhiking legal while on the shoulder of the road Yellow: Hitchhiking legal while off the traveled portion of the road, stay in the grass to be safe. Red: Hitchhiking is completely illegal. Gray: Specific laws

On one point you're right - they do whatever they want even if one doesn't have a thumb out. That doesn't mean it's legal for them to do so. One has the same rights as anyone-else not breaking the law. Including the right to be protected from unwarranted searches. - They need "a specific and articulable belief that criminal activity is afoot" for them to preform an unwarranted search.

You are mistaken. You are not protected from unwarranted searches. You are protected from having their results admitted as evidence against you in court after you are arrested and have a lawyer.. If you hitch don't carry. Duh.

Good advice though - "If you hitch, don't carry - duh"
But they usually gave me my weed and piece back - luck of the draw though, don't bet on it.

They didn't have to but they just didn't want to be bothered with processing you for bullshit. They hate that shit and if you aren't a fucking asshole they will let it go. Do not for one second think it has anything to do with rights. It has to do with cops being reluctant to make a tedious bust for bullshit

Sorry for the late reply guys. Replying right now on my phone is so weird on the shroomery lol. Anyways, I'm in New York now. They're going to pick me up so no hitchhiking for the moment. But daaaamn I've had a great time already lol. Sitting at my last bus stop waiting for them. So I rolled up 3 blunts to take with me on the bus right? I smoked one with this black dude with dreads, he was cool as fuck (met him while I was still in Texas then we split up after that) THEN when I got to Memphis Tennessee these undercovers came onto the bus and started asking to see everyone's tickets. I showed him mine and he started questioning me hard about me coming from Texas and going so close to the Canadian border and asking how long I'd be there and all this other bullshit (which is stupid because if I'm going from Texas to try and get weed I would obviously go to Colorado) and the whole time I'm talking to him I have 2 blunts in my shirt pocket...AND THEN once he stops questioning me, like as soon a he stops, they bring a drug dog on the bus and it passed me literally 4 times. My heart was beating so hard, I thought my trip was over lol. But then the bus started to take off again and I was so relieved. So then at the next bus stop I found the first person I could that seemed like he was 420 friendly and we went and smoked both of those blunts because I wasn't traveling with that shit anymore after that. A lot of people have been lifting me up about what I'm doing and it's been making me feel badass. I've met some cool people that I added on Facebook (one dude was from London). Idk this trip is just awesome, I've never felt so free an as of right now this is like the best anti-depression medicine I've ever had in my life. I feel alive as fuck I'll be at this farm for 3 months at least (maybe 6) and by that time I'll be able to get another bus ticket (bless my grandmothers heart) so I should be safe from the northern winter. Hahaha New York City is fucking crazy. I'll keep you guys posted in the next week or two. And thanks so much for the advice guys. I'm not planning on having my thumb out though, I was just going to walk with a sign strapped to my back that says something along the lines of "Oregon bound" and just keep walking. Nothing illegal about that
Cheers guys
