About to start hitchhiking
    #22199671 - 09/06/15 09:35 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

So basically I'm miserable in the small Texas town I've been living in for the last 16 years and I had been saving up quite a bit of money from selling weed to get out of this town...then my house got broke into one night and all of my money was stolen (my fault, lesson learned).

I started getting thrown back into my abyss of depression and started getting suicidal thoughts (this happened just a few months ago) and one night I was contemplating the idea when a small voice in my head said "fuck that, just travel."

So I went to my dealer and got some weed fronted to me, paid him back, made the money needed to get me what I needed (a good backpack, water pack, water filter, etc.) and now I have a bus ticket to New York pretty soon.

Why New York?

I do this program called WWOOF (WorldWide Opportunities on Organic Farms). I basically travel from organic farm to organic farm and work in return for my food, shelter, internet access, etc.
Anyways, one of the first farms to message me was in NY so I was like "fuck it". I have a very high respect and love for nature so I thought this would be able to tie into that.

My bus drops me off 12 hours (walking distance) from where the farm I'm going to is at so I'll be walking/hitchhiking the rest of the way there. After I get through working on this farm for 3 - 6 months, I'll move onto the next farm which I'll more than likely be hitchhiking to as well.

I'm sure this is what I want to do with my life. Call it stupid but I have no plan for a future career or anything else, I genuinely just want to get out there and see what happens for shits and giggles. Ever since I decided to do this it's at least given me what feels like a purpose in life and I haven't been having suicidal thoughts. It's just been nice to have this feeling of freedom of going anywhere I want to go.

Anyone have any experience hitchhiking? or any advice about hitchhiking or life in general?

How to get started in bulk:
Presto 23-Quart Pressure Cooker
BOD's Simple as FUCK Still Air Box
PastyWhyte's Easy Agar Tek
Munchauzen's Cultivation Video Series
How EvilMushroom666 Prepares His Grains (I use jars with Synthetic Filter Discs)
What is G2G? (Grain-to-Grain)
Damion5050's Coir Tek (I use 5.5 - 6 quarts of water instead of 4. Also ignore step 13 and ignore the monotub completely. The only purpose of this tek is to show you how to make a simple substrate. I also add gypsum to it but not necessary)
Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful)
Use 6500k lights throughout the whole process. When you wake up, turn the light on. When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

No experience here, just wanted to say enjoy life. Career, material wealth, or whatever other common, civilized concept isn't important. Get out there, feed yourself, and have fun! WWOOF is a program i've definitely been considering for a bit now.

So far I have (including what I'll be wearing):
7 shirts
9 underwear
4 jeans
6 long sleeve flannel shirts
3 sweatshirts
2 longjohn bottoms
4 longjohn tops
A good jacket
Insolated cover-alls

Hopefully I should be good with that. It's all in a suitcase that has wheels on it so it feels pretty light when I walk with it.

EDIT: I also have like 10 pairs of socks too lol. About 4 pairs of those are thick

You're practically on the other side of the state from me. I'm near Houston.

There's a good number of Texans here.

If I wasn't born and raised here, I'd probably pick any other state to live in. Having a car with no A/C is practically a death sentence.

Yeah to be honest the only Texas city I can say I actually enjoyed being in was Austin. Everywhere else just seems so grey

Good luck! I wish I had the balls to do something like that.
Unfortunately, I'll probably deal with my first world pseudo-misery long enough to save the money for a safe move.. blah. Mucho respect, sending you good vibes

*I say pseudo-misery not to take away from your story. I'm just weird, I think about how some people have it way worse than me but my perspective is still relevant blah-blah-blah. So I have this tendency to go off on verbose tangents. Point is, at least you're doing something about it. Right on

Thats cool I considered doing WWOOF for awhile but never did. I had an account but it expired. Hey, maybe you can learn all about organic farming while you're doing it, and then if one day you do decide to settle down somewhere, you'll have an expertise in something and might be able to find yourself a job

With my experience from traveling without somewhere to stay, combined with being homeless several times I would have recommended starting this adventure in Mid-Spring to avoid potentially sleeping outside in freezing conditions, which could be fatal if not prepared.

I wish you all the best luck, and safe travels on your journey.

You should! It's a pretty solid program for it only being $40 a year. There's farms everywhere on that website.
I'm hoping to learn a lot from this experience.
Maybe I'll find someone who's interested in my knowledge about DMT along the way

Thanks man. I should be okay with the WWOOFing program as far as shelter goes. But you're right, it probably would have been smart to wait until spring but I'm far too restless and impatient to wait any longer. I need to get out there as soon as I can and try to make a difference. I've been putting off an experience like this for about 2 years anyways with the thought of waiting until I got more money or waiting until it was warmer but it seems like the longer I do that the more time I'm running out of.
My impatience will either make or break me on this one.

I used to hitch hike in NY 40 years ago.  The interstates were OK but getting a ride on the local roads was from hunger.  Where's the farm?
