Kush_Zombie,

I highly recommend that you bring some: Gloves, Scarfs, Ski-Mask (not for robbing a bank, for keeping warm), a very, very thick snow jacket, & some heavy duty waterproof boots. Someone from Texas going to New York is not going to be familiar with the winters there. You will be very cold.

Best of luck man.

It's in northern New York, pretty close to the Canadian border. I'll definitely be plenty cold while I'm up there haha.

Thanks man, I appreciate the advice. I'll need to grab some gloves while I'm up there (Texas doesn't really supply thick gloves for the winter) and possibly a good winter jacket if mine doesn't hold up to the weather. I have a ski-mask and heavy duty waterproof steel-toe boots so at least I have that much. I was in southern Oregon last winter so it at least gave me a small taste of the northern weather....Although I'm sure New York is much colder.

LMAO it's funny you say this because I'm actually thinking about seeing how difficult it would be for me to get passport and travel up there. I can only imagine how cold it is in Canada though ay?

Munchauzen's Cultivation Video Series
How EvilMushroom666 Prepares His Grains (I use jars with Synthetic Filter Discs)

Damion5050's Coir Tek (I use 5.5 - 6 quarts of water instead of 4. Also ignore step 13 and ignore the monotub completely. The only purpose of this tek is to show you how to make a simple substrate. I also add gypsum to it but not necessary)
Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful)
Use 6500k lights throughout the whole process. When you wake up, turn the light on. When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

Hitchhiking on the east coast is harder than out west in my experience.

Don't waste too much time working on other people's farms for free.  It is great to help out fledgling organic farms who need a hand, especially if they're competent and willing to teach, but WWOOF is highly unregulated and I've heard of some shady operators taking advantage of the free labor pool.  If something seems unfair, just skiddadle.

Good luck.  Keep us posted on where you're at and let me know if you make it to Central MA.  Don't have a place I can offer unfortunately but I'll buy you a beer and a nice meal.

Definitey appreciate this advice. Something I've been wondering about is how much the farms actually go by the program and how much are just looking for free labor. Don't get me wrong, it's cool to want free labor, but it's not cool to take advantage of people in the process.
I already turned down one farm because they seemed shady.
I'll definitely hit you up if I make it that way! :raisemyglass:

Yeah I've heard some horror stories from other wwoofers of people who had them cleaning and operating a run-down food truck for free.  People just digging ditches and doing mundane labor that has nothing to do with farming.  I'm not sure how common it is, I know there are some really good hosts involved too who will take care of you right, so just be careful.

Most of farming is mundane labor

"doing mundane labor that has nothing to do with farming." Like digging ditches and operating & cleaning run-down food trucks.

What makes you think digging ditches is unrelated to farming or maintaining the truck that is used to sell the products is unrelated to farming?

Yeah well perhaps that is a bad example.  You're right, these farms are dependant on human labor to a much greater extent than typical modern farms, and that entails alot of repetitive and strenuous work.

The distinction I'm trying to make is some people are genuinely into the whole co-operative model that WWOOF seems to embody, and are very fair and appreciative to those that volunteer.  Some aren't and should be avoided.  When I was a member (5 years ago?) the site was a complete mess and it was really hard to find good matches, so it takes some research and it's always good to try and find ones that have good reviews from other WWOOFers.

If you are working for nothing you are already a schmuck no matter what you are doing.  Farming involves just about everything.

Working hard for room and board is a sucker trap. Even min wage jobs pay better than that and farm work is very hard work. Think about it, 40 hours a week, if that's all they require, x $7.35 gives you more than enough to pay for a room and food and you won't be breaking your back. They may want you to work 6 days a week, and long hours. They can promise anything you want to hear but if they say get out and work or we toss your stuff in the street what can you do? It sounds like slave labor. Just because its an organic farm doesn't mean its a bunch of hippies who love everyone.

At least some salary would have to come with it. Or else how do you get by when things cost money that you have to pay? That will come up, trust me on that.

If its ny min wage might not pay for a room and food but they pay way more than min. Bus boy, sweeper, anything will be easier than farm work. What happens if you get sick or hurt? Farm work is dangerous.

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

Re: About to start hitchhiking [Re: Stonehenge]

I'm not doing this for money. I'm sure I'll need money for something eventually but as for the time being, I really don't care. To be fair, my grandma is helping me out with what she can (bless her heart). She told me I'm always welcome back home and she'd send me a little money ever few months if I needed it for soap and basic things like that.
There will come a time where I'll be on my own completely and no one will be able to help me but myself. I assure you, the idea of working full time minimum wage as a bus boy or a sweeper to pay for my apartment and Monsanto food for me to eat sounds more like slave labor to me than anything else. maybe that's just me.
I'm doing this to help out the planet the best way I know how, but most importantly I'm doing this for myself. I need this more than anything. If anything just to have it slap me in the face and tell me "See, you had it made back home."
But for right now, I just need this adventure and I need the challenge of just doing it with the things that I can carry. I have a lot of growing up to do in life and I tend to learn the hard way on almost everything.
I know it sounds as though what I'm doing is stupid and makes me a "schmuck" but this is really what I want out of life right now and at this moment that's all that matters to me.

Doing "slave labor" for the planet to provide organic food in my stomach and a roof over my head is a far better scenario than doing slave labor for a corporation that has no other intentions but to consume.

I've done slave labor for far worse than this, trust me. Maybe I am a schmuck but I know which choice I'll wish I had taken when I'm in my last minutes of life.

You are right though, just because it's an organic farm doesn't mean it'll be filled with hippies that love everyone. But I assure you I have a far better chance of finding that at an organic farm than I do cleaning dishes at a fast food restaurant.

I traveled for a year and a half and I would definitely hit the west coast, trim season is starting up. My suggestion would be ditch the suitcase get a good travel pack thats used and not flashy so you dont get robbed...Hitch or ride freight. Probably the best way to go...As far as what you plan on bringing clothes wise is way too much IMO. Theres resources everywhere for free clothes and food. Find a road dog, if you can. Safe travels...

OP even though you not career minded organic farms are a growth industry. My buddy spent years getting graduate degree then just said fuck it and started organic farm. I can't remember even he what grows and makes. He does all the packaging on site and sells to grocery stores himself. Says he's never been happier. Anyway you should be able to take your new farming skills and travel overseas too you sound ready to live on the cheap. Good luck!

That would be awesome to get a career started from doing this
Not expecting it though.

I'm heading out in a few hours guys. Packing up the laptop so that my suitcase is ready to go.

Wish me luck
