My grandma passed away in April 2008 coinky dink, right when the morel season started. Made things damn difficult too.

sorry to hear that

At the funeral I talked with her sister about morels, and she was tellin me about how her and my grandma use to find them in the orchards and stuff. They loved them. Of course this is down in the hills of Kentucky down in Daniel Boone State Forest. Pass Clay City down there and Natural Bridge, all the pot smokers I know, are familiar with that area as the "Gorge".

Its a weird thing. When I was in those woods down there the plant life was different. Different types of plants than what we have up in Cincinnati.

LOL, I had found a morel on the main trail going up towards the "Natural Bridge". The only one I spotted going up to it.

I had my fears about getting into those woods though, thought I might run into some rattlesnakes but I figure that in the springtime its just
too damn cold for them.

Very Interesting graph data on morels.

Its almost obvious what is going on. And humidity wasn't much of a factor although being random on its averages.

But its definitely related to temperature. Remember when I said bacterial activity doesn't start to become active until temperatures are 50°F or higher?

You can see where I missed the black morels in 2007, I was too focused on April, and for years never knew they grew in my area.

April in my area is notorious for cold snaps around the first week of the month.

So it seems that if you were to grow morels:

Humidity is a factor that will determine yields. Low humidity will result in fewer fruitbodies. So 75% - 95% is good regardless of temperature.
Yet your temperatures will need to be above 50°F and around 64.4°F. So that's an obvious fact due to the graph. There are no 71.6°F peaks until the yellow morels show up. So blacks like it colder around 50°F - 64.4°F to fruit. Yellows like 64.4°F - 71.6°F to fruit.

Temperature is a factor that triggers fruitbody growth and whatever the mechanism is that causes them to fruit, whether its a bacteria influencing their growth in the spring or a bacteria influencing proper sclerotial growth during the rest of the year is uncertain as of yet.
But whichever, it still remains a temperature related factor for triggering growth.

So how do plants figure into this? or even trees? Maybe the bacteria aid in an opportunistic symbiosis with plant life. But I do not put any trust into the notion that they are dependent on trees for fruitbody production in a direct manner or mycorrhizal like truffles, amanita, chanterelles, or any other type of mycorrhizal fungi.

The first day I found black morels the trees had no leaves or starts of leaves.

blacks start fruiting when ground temps start to average 48f , at around 52 degrees  greys and yellows start to fruit.

this is echoed in their fruiting pattern,
early in the season south and west elevations on hillsides produce, a little later the east and north elevations produce.

hmm I don't know about that. Seeing that there have been long periods of 50 degree weather in the wintertime for more than three days.
52 seems too cold for the yellows. And they always show up when temperatures are bounding as high as 80. 52 would be ok for blacks though. 60ish for the yellows.

ground temps. not air temps

just because it gets 50 for a few days in winter does not mean that the overall ground temperature gets to 50.

the temperatures i gave you are for fruiting initiation...meaning at 52 degrees ground temperature, yellow morels begin to grow and form primordia.

Well the graph is of actual weather data from OARDC and NOAA, so those are recorded temperatures.
And the ground temperatures stay above 30°F in the winter and are warmer than the air temperatures.
The ground stays warmer in the wintertime than the air, thats a fact.
Because ground temperatures are warmer in winter than air temperatures, due to the thermal mass of the Earth

oh really? even when its frozen?

i can vouch for the fact the ground can be in a frozen state while ambient air temps can be above 50.

i work construction and have had snowball fights in may when a pile of snow was uncovered in the middle of excavation spoil.

deep below the frost line (4 feet or deeper) ground temperatures average around 52 degrees-- for the purpose of checking ground temps im referring to the first 12 inches of topsoil.

There are temperatures colder than the freezing point. 32°F or 0°C.

And another thing, since when is May in the wintertime??? When did May become wintertime??? Thats springtime!

"And another thing, since when is May in the wintertime??? When did May become wintertime??? Thats springtime!"

exacavation spoil Acidhorse, its when you dig a big hole and pile it all up...the extra is the spoil. The dirtboys buried some snow under the dirt, and in May, when it was 68 degrees out, they decided to put it back- they uncovered snow so we decided to have a snowball fight.

"Stop fucking with me."
i wasnt, i was providing rebuttal to your argument.

"Stop trying to find every little detail I missed where I wasn't specific. You know what the hell I mean from the context.

You're just wanting to start trouble. I don't like that kind of shit."

apparently having an opinion and data that differs from yours constitutes "starting trouble"
this is a forum- if there were no dissent we could all just sit back and watch you post your rhetoric, patiently waiting for you to produce a consistent method of growing morels for us.

"That's why you just work construction."

thanks so much for attacking my chosen profession. Im proud of what i do , and in fact have a degree in civil engineering and a masterbuilders card.
I doubt youre posting this from a tent, and you are using the internet-- someone had to connect and bury all the optic cable that is carrying the information to and from your computer- thats right, just us construction workers.

AcidHorse all of that flaming was uncalled for. You could have easily made your point without the excessive junk. You're a great contributor to this thread and we all appreciate your efforts to advance it. However we need to keep this thread informative and focused if we want to unlock the morel secrets.

LOL. get in line.

It was an exercise in logic. He played it just as well as I did.

Ultimately, he threw fire on to a fire in the hopes to extinguish it.

And yet I was right, and he was right about something irrelevant but used it to dispute something that was Ultimately true.

So now do you want to argue with me?

If I say that "fish breathe underwater" do you want to say "No! elephants don't have fins." ????

It's an aggravation to me. I was right the first time around.

So don't jump my shit because other people are carelessly posting rebuttals.

And let's get this straight, it wasn't flaming, but it was perfect political correctness being placed upon my peers.

I'm sure he knows about things in a different field that I'm not even aware of.

That's the problem with people on messageboards.
If someone is vehement about something and it looks like flaming they are ready to grill their butts
, even if that person is absolutely correct.

Be in denial of truth. Have it your way and end up in ruin.

Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, I'm just confused about what his belief was of my statement on this topic.

:1up:  <---- is this what you are trying to accomplish?

I'll jump your shit too.  Knock it off please.  This isn't OTD.  Please have an intelligent conversation or none at all.  Since very few mycologists have succeeded in growing morels in captivity, it's not something to argue about unless you can show repeated positive results from certain methods, which I haven't seen yet.  I now live in the middle of a major morel habitat, so am doing some work myself, but am not about to argue my points until I can show dozens of trays of fruiting morels.

We also have a rule about bumping your own threads within 24 hours, which you broke repeatedly above.  Nobody is perfect, so let's keep the flaming to PM, or better yet bottled up.  Thanks.
