I don't think life is a metaphysical conjecture
    #9609369 -

The idea that life arised from the play out of matter acting as it does from following fundamental physical laws makes sense from a science standpoint.  But the probability of that is so ridiculously unlikely that i think its more likely that reality as we know it as a simulation in another beings technology for its own curiosity.  I think that treating life and consciousness in a materialistic way such as science which explain the material world and everything around us is very old fashioned.  How come life which is EVERYWHERE on planet earth from bacteria all over the place where u are right now all over your multi trillion celled body to bacteria in the depths of deep ocean vents.  However to date there is no such evidence for life anywhere else, ANYWHERE else in the universe exists.  Not even archea are known to exist anywhere.  There is no evidence that earth is the cradle of life, no one knows why its here and how it got here.  Life is so vastly unique in its properties in manipulating its existence from changing environment i find it a complete mystery that life isn't everywhere in the universe.  Its ability to adapt has me under the impression that it should be everywhere, not confined to earth.  It doesn't make sense?  If you believe that life formed from metaphysical conjecture, why only here?  Shouldn't it have been evolving to fit all the environments of the universe?  And because of this i think that something put us here.  We didn't just spring out of the primordial soup, something happened suddenly and abruptly for life to start.  I don't believe in a god in any formal religious institution would, but i do think that something that we cannot even imagine is responsible for our existence.  I don't know what it is, but i enjoy thinking about it:)

How do you know this?  We just recently found water on Mars; in all likelihood we will find evidence of bacteria or other organism on another planet in our Solar system within good time.  We're speaking from an extremely limited perspective here--how can you discount the possibility of life occurring on the billions upon billions of other planets in the Universe?

Yes this is a very good argument, but still even from our limited perspective don't you think some form of life could exist without water as its catalyst for evolution?  And if so it should be everywhere in our solar system?  And wouldn't it be likely that there would be other forms of life just as intelligent as us if not more intelligent that would be curious enough to contact us through some sort of means?  Even SETI hasn't been able to pick up a whisper of this in its almost 30 years in existence.

You're evaluation of a-priori probabilities is skewed by your disenchantment and unknown hidden assumptions. You make baby Bayes cry

Personally I think we "simply" need one or two breakthroughs in non-equilibrium statistical physics, self-organization and decoherence/quantum Darwinism and a god should pop out of well another gap (no accusation here). We might never get there though and I'm just as skewed I suppose.

So give me a scientific explanation as to how suddenly matter organized its self to become alive, and strive for novelty and existence?  It makes no sense to me.  If you have one i would like to hear it because i like making myself a more educated person.  To treat the world and make assumptions based only what we humans can perceive through our senses and restrict it to that is naive thinking imo.

It surely is yes, although that's all we have. Fortunately it's also ever growing. There is no scientific explanation as of yet, but my intuition comes from contacts with certain emergent fields of biology, complex systems, statistical and quantum physics. If you're curious, look for concepts such as "order for free", "self-organization", "dissipative structures", "quantum Darwinism" and see where it leads you in regard to the question of the origin of life, it might interest you.

Give me a spiritual explanation? Yes, it makes no sense but how does god made the universe make sense? Either way something has to of just sprung into existence. Science never claimed it was gonna have the answer to the mysteries of the universe. It's just a way of trying to get the closest to objective truth about aspects of the physical realm.

Sure, I don't see why not.

Just because life can subsist somewhere does not mean that life will be there.  I don't follow the implication, particularly if the series of chance collisions that created the first self-replicating molecule are truly as rare as they're made out to be.

Yeah, this is puzzling.  The first explanation is that all other forms of life have undergone extinction and thus aren't around to communicate with us.  Another is that we're the most advanced out of any form of life out there.  Another is that since the Universe has been around for so long, technological singularities and other exponentially increasing moves towards evolution a la McKenna have already occurred for other lifeforms; but why don't these interact with us?  Perhaps we're unimportant in the grand scheme of things, and these other intelligences have nothing to learn.  Perhaps UFOs really are alien intelligences.  Perhaps even our whole conception of life and/or intelligence is species-centric; if another alien contacted us, would we even recognize it as alive?  Perhaps this is all a test to deem us worthy in the eyes of the Other?

I can't personally disagree with life originating through a chance collision, but I also can't explain how consciousness arose.  Perhaps the best explanation is that the entire Universe is alive, and we're merely different facets at lesser entropies observing ourselves?  Naturally, this is all speculation, but panpsychism looks better and better the more I look into it.

BIG EDIT HERE:  This is why i was hesitant to to use god.  First off i don't think anything created the universe, secondly the thread is about life and consciousness not the formation of the universe.

I personally believe its more likely that some sort of "god" i hate that using that word here because it can be interpreted differently than what i mean by it, but for lack of a better word "god" than any explanation science has to offer:shrug:  I think with the progression of quantum mechanics we might get close to that, but from our current understanding of the unv i think its more plausible that a "god" gave life to earth.  Rather than the billions of coincidences that have happened for life as we know it to be possible.

I think that science has thus far been able to explain from our human perspective a great deal about the operations of nature and this has formed a pretty reliable foundation for the development of species and what not.

I do not claim to be an expert on this matter of the origin of life. But to me it seems that there very well could be deity out there, no science really explains why there is a will to life, no explanation can probably be given except that there is apriori a will within all beings that possess life. I think the will to power concept is pretty damn interesting. But then again

Quote:
Orgel's Second Rule

"Evolution is cleverer than you are."

Orgel's Second Rule is intended as a rejoinder to the argument by lack of imagination. In general, this rule expresses the sometimes experienced fact that "trial and error" strategies are better than centralized intelligent human planning.

Orgel's rule can also be used to counter creationist arguments in which often the hidden and non-provable presumption is suggested, that human intelligent planning is in general superior to trial and error strategies used by evolution.

The same principle has been given as an analogy to software developed in an evolutionary sense by group collaboration, as opposed to software built to a pre-ordained design that was created without reference to previous implementation. Although, the development is not claimed to be of the same random nature as is by evolutionary genetics.

As big thermodynamical machines minimizing their Gibb's energy by going from less probable to more probable states, I rather see in "life", "will" and "thoughts" the Taoist principle of Wu Wei and of Wu Wei Wu, meaning "action without action". The same apply to the illusion of free-will, consciousness, etc ; they are not something we have, or some state we are in, they are something we do, or more precisely, they are something done.
