Noobie question...Prob with bottom of jars...Use now or wait longer?

I have had some pint popcorn jars colonizing for a little over 3 weeks now.  The jars are completely colonized except for the bottoms.  I have seen that this is a very common problem.  I flipped half of them upside-down to see how that would work, and they have all grown at about the same rate - very slowly.  Over the last week the bottom layer of uncolonized popcorn, which is only one kernal thick, has colonized about 40 percent.  My concern is that I dont know if waiting for the bottom part to colonize will take too long thus having a detrimental effect on the mycellium. 

So, should I just wait for the bottom to colonize completely or should i just use the jars now and pick out the few uncolonized kernals?  Has anyone experimented with sonething similar to this?

I would think that the bottom is not colonizing becasue there is too much watter in it and its sinking to the bottom.

Well there isnt any visible water that i can see in the bottom.  There is actually condensation on the sides of the jars with healthy looking mycellium growing right over it. 

I have heard this problem comes from a lack of oxygen at the bottom of the jars.

i had the same problem on a few jars recently, it is most likely too much water just as 2Cents said. if they are fully colonized with the exception of the wet areas try to shake the jars to possibly spread the moisture. that didn't alleviate the problem entirely with my wbs jars but it was enough to work with. also try to case it using clean technique and contams shouldn't be a problem. good luck - :thumbup:

shaking the jars will allow fresh air to come in contact with most of the mycelium. jars stalling from lack of air exchange happens typically if you have only one small air exchange hole or none at all, or with jars a half gallon or larger.

I just tried to shake the jars up but the they are so colonized that nothing inside the jars move.  They will only slide up and down the jars as a whole mass about a thrid of an inch.

Just wait, they will colonize. Or they will become contaminated.  If the contamination is the reason the jars are not progressing then you wouldn't want to use them as spawn anyways.  What type of lids are you using? What temp are they at?

The bottom of a grain jar failing to colonizing usually means bacterial contamination. If you screw up the water contents of your grain, it will all sink towards the bottom and give any bacteria left over from PC'ing a fighting chance to fuck up your project.

Also - popcorn sucks and has a greater chance of contamination than WBS or rye.

Turn the jar upside down if the bottom is not colonizing..  Sounds like you have a CO2 Build up at the bottom flipping the jar will solve the problem..

I'll don't know if popcorn has a greater chance of contams.  it sucks because of the nute levels, and the large sized of the kernels allow for very little mycelium in a jar comparative to other grains. Not to mention the lack of moisture retention, and the when spawning a fewer number of inoc points.

I hvae regular ball lids with three holes that have paper tape over them.  They are at just about 82 degrees.  I dont think the jars are contaminated because there has been good growth in the rest of the jar.  I am going to spawn them to coir with gypsum and coffee.  I know popcorn was a poor choice, especially for bulk, but i didnt know when i first made the jars so i figure i will take what i can get from them.  I would case them but i have terrarium set up for bulk and I can't change the conditions.

I will just wait for the bottoms to colonize. 

Does anyone have tips for more additives to the coir to help with nutrients?  I don't have access to poo or straw right now.

RR has said in the past that when he tested out popcorn, he had something like 1 out of 20 jars contaminate, when he usually only has 1 out of 1000 contaminate with rye berries. The endospores in popcorn are a lot hardier than in other grains.

It's not recommended but you could scoop out the colonized kernels and break them up leaving behind the bottom of the jar.

If its stopped theres a problem, could just be they're drying out, I hate popcorn I tryed and tryed and could not get the moisture content right, one of these days...

are you using wide mouth jars? and how full are your jars? because if you can't get your mycelium to break up then you have another problem to deal with. try a roll of duck tape to break up the kernels, each kernel will be an inoculation point in your bulk substrate. if you really can't break up the mass then try to fruit in the jar. i don't know how well paper tape will work as a filter and with gas exchange. polyfil has worked very well for me and can be found at every super walmart in the craft section and is like three bucks. one bag can do many lids, look into it.

I made another batch of ten with popcorn a while after I made the first batch and i thought i had the moisture right but i looks like i might have messed it up because there is a small amount of water pooling in the bottom of 7 of the jars, and they haven't shown grown yet.

You can try to shake the jars up to disperse the moisture..

No, I have regular mouth jars.  Another poor choice, I know, but that's all they had left at Wal-Mart because and it's gone because it's a seasonal thing.  So, I have a few questions.

How would I get the substrate out?  Just try to spoon it out gently? How would I use duct tape to break up the kernals?

to get the mycelium out of the jar just break it up and tap it out, then mix it into your bulk sub. wide mouth jars are only needed if you plan to birth cakes really, regular jars are perfect. and let me clarify for you, you don't want to break the kernels, you want to separate them from one another. broken grains have a higher chance of contamination.
