11oz First Flush on Auto Mono(Pics and Process) 1

It's been awhile since I've posted anything of my own, so I thought I would share what I've been up to with the community. A few of the basic procedural pics below are borrowed from some of my previous endeavors, but the tub and setup along with the pin porn are all new.
First I'd like to say Hi.
I use rye berries, wheat berries, or rice as spawn. On this particular occasion I used all three.
Jar of Colonizing Wheat Berries

Mixed Rice Blend and a Colonizing Jar

At 100%

The Bulk Substrate Used
50% Coconut Coir, 20% Manure, 20% Verm and 10% Gypsum
I sift any lumps, stones, or chunks out to make it as light and fluffy as possible. Once hydrated to field capacity, I pasteurize.

The Auto Mono Tub System I use
I use Heavy Duty Tubs setup in the following way. I only drill 6 1.5" holes. One at the top and two at the bottom at each long side of the tub. I don't need extra holes for FAE because as you will see I regulate in a different way.
An outside view of the tub with a remote thermometer/hygrometer on top.

The black piece sticking out the top of the tub in the above picture is a outdoor light socket mounted to the the lid. This way I can screw a 6500K enclosed CFL bulb right into the underside of the lid as seen below.

Here is where the automated part comes in(only at fruiting). I have an ultrasonic set up on a digital timer that kicks on 8 times a day for 5 minutes. This takes care of Misting(bottom tube). That is quite a bit of moisture for a tub, so to keep up with evaporation of the substrate and FAE I use an air pump with tubing(top tube). I can adjust the airflow and it blows 24/7. After I got it dialed in the humidity never drops below 99%.

The air pump is heavy duty and runs several tubs as well as my pmp.

Now that I have my tub, fully colonized grain spawn and pasteurized sub I spawn at at around a 1 to 3 ratio of spawn to bulk sub as follows.
Bottom Layer of Bulk Sub 1 Jar of Grain Spawn Layer of Bulk Sub 1 Jar of Grain Spawn Layer of Bulk Sub 2 Jars of Grain Spawn Layer of Bulk Sub 2 Jars of Grain Spawn Layer of Bulk Sub Top
This creates about a 4" layer of bulk substrate. I switch to 2 jars of spawn at the top two layers to give extra nutrients for fruits to pull from(This is an idea I borrowed from Fahster). It seems to work.
I leave the tubs untouched with the bottom holes taped for 7- 14 days. Once I see knots and pins(see below) I stuff polyfill in all the holes turn on the ultrasonic. Open the valve on the air pump for FAE and set to a 12/12 light cycle.

Then I relax and let the tub do its thing

First Flush Harvest is just over 11oz cracker dry

With some monsters, this one is around 18"
It came way ahead of the rest and literally reached up and touched the light.

Thanks, I know some may say it is a bit superfluous, but I enjoy it.

I'll be taking prints from the second flush. I'll give one out to the first person who can tell me what novel the fictional location(Macondo)is from. No cheating(don't just google it)

100 Years of Solitude. It was by some South American author I think.
Nice grow by the way.

11 dry ounces? WOW.
Whats your average first flush dry yield? Are your yields that high without horsepoo?

I average around 6-8 on the larger tubs like the one pictured. I want to go on record and say that I've yielded similar amounts from your standard mono-tub. However, I don't think you get the most out of any standard mono-tub if you do the sat and forget method. I think most will agree they benefit a great deal from misting and fanning. I go out of town often for two to three days at a time for work and hence the benefit of something that is automated. If nothing else the constant flow of fresh air has cut my contaminates through the first two flushes to almost zero. The large standard mono tubs even with the adequate amount of holes drilled still tend to be contaminate prone in a stuffy closet. As far as not using a manure based substrate I'm not really sure, I always use it in my bulk.

I'd have to look, but the substrate was comprised of 24 quarts.

As mentioned before this was an above average flush. Another thing worth noting; I am not working with MS, but an isolate. When I get home tonight I will post the tub size.

Indeed, that is a very awesome first flush for that amount of spawn. I would think a little drier then 99% would do better, but I dont know if you could do better? About how long did that tub take to colonize before fruiting conditions were introduced (consolidation too)?
Enjoy your fruits!

Enjoy your fruits!
When first placed into fruiting conditions I keep the air valve on the tube leading to that tub at the half open position 24/7. It seems at this point the higher humidity really helps with pin formation and I get very few aborts. After full fledged pinning sets in and semi-mature fruits are forming(see picture below)I adjust the air valve to wide open 24/7.

That tub took around 20 days including consolidation before I introduced to fruiting conditions. Sometimes a little more or a little less depending on spawn ratio. That's my best guess. I don't keep track, you can just tell when the tub is aching for it. The picture below was the first full day the sub was introduced to fruiting conditions. Harvest came like 4 or 5 days later.

M11, So I went to the All Good Festival this weekend and came back to a second flush that had sporulated everywhere. Nothing left to print except the inside of a tub that is completely black. I'll get you on the next one though.

None of the flush, I do have a pic of how thick the dusting of spores was. I'll post later when I am at home.
