Atheism
    #9251312 -

I stumbled upon these two articles and was very inclined to share.

I was raised Mormon and I'm now not atheist, but I don't believe in God. I suppose my opinion doesn't matter. I am religious to an extent though. I believe in humanity and that we are a remarkable species and the entire universe is not just random happenings. I believe there's a purpose, I just don't know exactly what the purpose is and I guess my religion is to find out the truth.

But here's the articles for discussion (for reasons of keeping orderly I will put up the links.):

Atheist billboards to debut during Holidays.

Atheists see bigger picture?

I like the way you put that, albeit short and sweet. No answer unless given proof is definitive. So who really cares?

No, an atheist KNOWS there is no God.  A-Theist = Without God

An agnostic, such as myself, may also not necessarily believe there is evidence of a God while accepting the fact that he cannot prove the non-existence.  A-Gnostic = Without Knowledge.

So you can not believe in God and not be an atheist.

I treat atheists the same way I treat religious zealots.  Neither stance makes much sense to me.

I am very interested in the seeming innate desire for religious belief in humans.  Every culture we have a historical record of has had a religious belief system, no matter how isolated from other groups.  This is very strange to me.  I'm a scientist, so to me the independent popping up of a trait in various groups that could not have contact with each other speaks to some common seeking of this kind of experience.

I've heard it postulated that religious belief is a kind of societal-grouping mechanism of evolution, in which our willingness to form groups based on a shared mythology is responsible for an increased survival rate, and hence an increased contribution to the genetic pool, by the groups or peoples who inherit such a trait.

Very very interesting stuff.

But I myself am not religious at all, despite doing a great deal of independent study on the world's religions.  I'm fascinated by the subject.

Like Dawkins said, being 100% agnostic about God is like being agnostic about the existence of an invisible pink unicorn--although technically a valid stance as either side cannot be proven, it's absolutely absurd to hold it as some evidence will favor a particular side over the other.

I'm a pragmatic atheist in that my model of reality doesn't need vague notions of metaphysical beings outside of space/time.

The second definition is the one I was referring to.  The doctrine that there is no deity.  This is the core difference between atheism and agnosticism.  The former states conclusively that there is no god.  The latter says the jury is still out.

It's one thing to read mythology and say "That was a good read. I liked it. It was interesting." It's an entirely different thing to read mythology and throw years of biology out of the window because you just desire to believe something. I can desire to believe in the FSM because of the stories I've read about his noodly appendages. But that's childish, and ill thought out when there are basic principles that show me what's what.

Yeah truth is when someone says god they are referring to something specific you can not believe in god and still be spiritual or believe in a deity just not call it god.

No doubt.  But doesn't it seem interesting to you that so many people are so easily able to suspend their rational disbelief?  I mean, it's not that these people are stupid.  I deal with many P.h.D's all the time, people who I feel are definitely more intelligent than myself.  Many of them I know to be deeply religious.

These aren't your Christian reactionaries.  These are are hard-core scientists who both belief the Earth is 4.6 Billion years old and that Jesus Christ was raised from the dead.

It's hard to reconcile...
