What does it hurt to make up your mind that there is something greater? I have no evidence of God per se and therefore my faith is blind. Largely, I believe out of fear. Maybe that's the wrong reason. All I know is that I want to live my life trying to be the best person I can be in hopes that, if there is a God, I can interact with Him/It in the afterlife.
I gotta say I'm kinda weirded out by this. I don't understand how someone can "Believe" in something just by making up their mind to do so. If I want to believe in the tooth fairy, no matter how hard I try, I just can't do it. its to absurd. Living your life to be the best person you can should be on everyones list, not because they are scared of going to a bad place when they die, but because its kinda shitty to be mean. My views on the whole "Blind Faith" thing are already addressed in my above post.

Okay, I guess you do kinda have a point there. I suppose a lot of it is just upbringing.
For that matter, I don't necessarily view faith as an excuse to not think or question things either.

There are two types of people in the world, wolves and sheep. I generally would equate the religious to the sheep, as they put "faith" in an illogical concept of a higher being.
Personally, I believe the religious to be nothing more than individuals incapable of coping with reality, it's stresses, etc. and place the burden of such insecurities on this imaginary metaphysical chap named "God".
Now the Athiest, Non-Thiest, and Humanist are the Wolves, with logic as a weapon, only knowledge prevails.
-Put the burden of proof back on religions shoulders, proove your God is anything more then the rants of mad men.

I've done that on a drunken night, along with about 5 x pills, and 3 or 4 Oxy's.

These are my thoughts on the subject, don't think I am presenting this as factual, this is only one possible explanation I have thought about.
if there is a god, he transcends us so greatly that we are not of his concern. He was responsible for the creation of the Universe, maybe, but the fact that we are here and alive are meaningless to him, if a God exists. We will never know the creator of the universe, and maybe should not think of him as The sole creator and God of man kind, but rather some All Powerful sentient being. We need not think of this being, because we will never know it, and it either can't or does not care to communicate with us. It could be said that any religions in existence are only Man's crude explanation of why they exist, and do nothing to explain how the universe began, which far less is known about, as opposed to the creation of the human race, which is supportable through alternate hypotheses in a scientific manner. We will never even begin to understand the complexity of what caused our universe to come into existence, I think it is literally impossible to completely unveil the secrets of the universe. Mortals just are not capable of this.

Is it just me or are the atheists trash-talking the theists more so than vice versa?

Wow, I just read my posts and really got an idea of what a douche I can be. I get a little carried away at times. Believe me I know all about upbringing. Nurture is definitely more powerful than nature. It was not a smooth transition from looking at my parents like they were flawless to looking at them like they had no idea what they were talking about. To this day I think they are the only people in the world who don't know I don't believe in God. It would crush them. My mission is still to abolish religion from the Earth, but it breaks my heart to think of taking that away from them. Religion means a lot to people who really believe it.

Just Abolish It Already!
Everyone, Put Down Your Bible. Yes, do it right now. Go fuck a Hooker! Give in to your human nature. Religion isn't natural, it's poisonous.
Religion will be the cause of the end of time, stop believing in God right now. The survival of humanity depends on You!

Yeah, we do that. I guess when you don't believe in religion it starts really pissing you off how much it affects you life. I tend to take it out on the nearest believer. Since destroying religion is a totally unachievable goal, I just take pot shots at whoever happens to walk by. I'm a dick I know, but it seems like every time I turn around religion is affecting peoples lives and telling them what to do even if they dont believe in it. Things like that will piss people off.

It may also be that the Atheists heavily out number the religious dupes.
Atheism -- there's nobody home upstairs. 37 67% Theism -- I kick ass for the Lord! 18 33%

You're telling me. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how someone can be "born" a specific religion, like I was "raised" Catholic. But religion is something that's based on beliefs so

Dunno, best explanation, religious propaganda. The way people speak about religion especially to children is as if no one in the world doesn't believe in God. They do this so kids will not even consider the possibility God isn't there. (I've heard this told to Sunday school teachers more than once.) Anyone got any brainy ideas on how to get WBS out of your sink? I don't think Liquid Plumber is tough enough to dissolve that kind of stuff.
