Re: Agnostic, Theist, Atheist, Polytheist? [Re: deCypher]

I'm curious to see the proof that everything in the known Universe evolved from a big bang (where did that come from by the way?) and that all life as we know it, in all of its complex and diversified forms - all evolved from the same cell. It's all theory, another false assumption. Rather than go into the intricacies of human biology and the precious balance that is maintained for life to even exist in the first place, and have an endless debate where neither of us will change our viewpoints, I think this video generally expresses my POV somewhat.

Of course any situation offers learning opportunities.  The point is that it makes more sense to attribute genetic deformities to chance than to an unverifiable assumption about past lives, reincarnation, and gaining certain unfathomable life lessons from pain and suffering.  Moreoever, I would much rather believe in a God-less universe than in an Universe with a God who knowingly permits living creatures to undergo torment and agony.

That is your choice. I would believe that life is a school of souls. We have the ups and the downs, and everything in-between. And that is what makes it such an invaluable learning experience. It's all temporary anyway.

I'm more of the opinion that all things are cyclical, and so while I do give credence to the Big Bang Theory, to me it would be preposterous to think of that as the absolute beginning. It seems more likely that, on scales we can't yet comprehend or contemplate, the Universe contracts and expands, and has likely done so more times than we'll ever be able to count.

All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

The difference between my view and yours is that mine, in principle, can be verified.  We can theoretically throw a bunch of amino acids together, shake 'em up, and wait a few billion years to see if life is capable of being evolved.  Your belief relies on an untestable, and ultimately unexplainable Creator to start the process.  Deus ex machina much?

I agree that what happened before the Big Bang could possibly involve beings of which we have no comprehension, even though there's some theoretical argument towards time itself being created along with space in the Big Bang.  Thus, there was no before and therefore no need for anything to start the process (or at least, start in the traditional "God said let there be Light" way).  I have some sympathies towards this all being a simulation, but nonetheless, I think evolution from self-replicating molecules has shown to have much more empirical justification than any hand-waving argument that brings in a God to explain things.

Agreed.

I'd say I'm 50/50 agnostic/atheist.

Ignostic is very interesting.
I would say that one makes the most sense.

Define what you are talking about before you talk about it.

This is just semantics but agnostic is not an alternative to atheism or theism.  You either believe in god or you don't.  Everybody on the planet is either atheist or theist.

Or you could argue almost everyone of any religion is an atheist as they recognize only their own God(s).

I definitely believe in this theory. Although, I also think that there are long lasting effects from what we choose, as individuals, to do. Even into the next age(s). It's just a theory, though.
