I did try wax at the start, I guess initially it was a good move. But I found it gross, it got all over my pillow etc...

Using cotton thread to bind the dreads is effective. :yesnod: It is good for maintaining shape and keeping them separate.

I think that whoever came up with the caveman on the Geico commercials must have spent some time in Humboldt county, CA, or somewhere else where there is an abundance of hippies.  It really is hilarious to see someone with dreads working at a property management office or some other type of traditional job.  The caveman idea is kind of the same thing.

Beeswax may help hold things together a little but it's stickiness also has some nasty shit attract to it, dirt and what not. Honestly the only up keep is keeping them seperate and maybe like rubbing them at the root. The best thing you can honestly do to help tighten up your dreads is ocean water. You really don't need any products.

I remember coming to the shroomery asking people for advice and tips on the upkeep of dreads. and someone was like "part of the charm is letting them grow how their gonna grow." I sorta just let them do their thing and played with them. added some beads and wraps, joing ones together even.

I used to play with my hair obsessively before i had dreads, so for me the lack of maintenance really has more to do with like, how fast showering is and how i don't really have to DO my hair? I don't have to put like smoothing balms and shit in it anymore. no more straightening irons. my hair is how it is. and they look awesome, they feel awesome.

One woman told me once they she feels like her dreads give her strength. There is something to be said for the weight you're carrying around. They certainly have an energy thats empowering because they are of you. every dread is unique. They are like your little babies. or plants. THey are extensions of you in a way. It kinda reminds me of the feeling of opening up an old book.

I used to have dreads, but cut them off when my son was born 3 years ago.

ehheh I got mine done about 4 months ago.  Got wax put in at the beginin, but now just been rubbing them not very often, and going surfing which helps.  I still have patches of hair which are still not dreaded.

If anyone is thinking of using the method of getting a woolen jumper, putting it on your head and rubbing it in little circles - I would caution that this doesn't make dreads - more like a big matted dreadlock hat.  I tried it on one section now I have a matte of hair that covers quite a large area :P

So here they are, they are still noobs but I love them XD

1)section and backcomb
2)let it be
3)occasional wash and ocean water

am I correct, or am I missing any other stuff I should be doing? my hairs really short now, but when it grows im getting dreads. I just wanna be straight on what I'm going to do before I do it

PH free shampoo too. Expensive, but unlike normal shampoo, it doesn't have the foaming ingredient which tries to untangle your hair.

Naw, just use a vegetable based bar of soap! Doc Bronner's is the best, Kirk's Castille is good too. A basic soap; Its way cheaper than the fancy shampoos.

yeah i've heard so many people endorse dr.bonners for dreadlocks. Is it available at many department or chain stores?

Yeah, Dr. Bronner's is available at some chain stores and small health food stores.  It's really good unless you have really hard water, in which case it doesn't properly wash out of your hair and leaves residue (even tho it's residue-free).

I personally only use it if I absolutely have to because of this.  I actually use about 1/4 cup baking soda with about 9 drops tea tree oil all dissolved in warm water.  Scrub that around and then wrap all my hair up in a towel for 30 min or so, then wash out and air dry.

As for sectioning and backcombing, do it if you want.
