a friend of a friends mushroom crop.........
    #893560 - 09/19/02 12:35 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

So, this guy that one of my friends knows is groing mushrooms. The strain is creeper. Twenty half-pint BRF/Verm jars were cased in a big sterlite container. The casing was 50% peat and 50% Miracle-Grow potting mix with AquaCoir. The bottom of the container was filled with just enough casing mixture to just cover it, very thin layer. Then the cakes were cut in half so that they were still circular. Cakes were packed in and then some were crumbled to fill in the gaps. Then the cakes were covered with casing mixture to a depth of about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch. For air exchange there is a fitting on the top of one side that is hocked up to an air pump that pumps filtered air. On the opposite side on the bottom, just above the casing layer, is another hole drilled and filled with polyfil. This is for the CO2 to escape. Pump is turned on a few times a day just long enough to fill the whole container with fresh air. Condensation is on the sides of the container, but not dripping.

Now, the mushrooms are groing great. There are over 100 mushrooms growing, but they are pretty small. The biggest stem is smaller then a pinky finger and the average length right now is about 4-5 in. They do not look deformed at all, they are proportional for their size. They will probably be picked in two days.

First question, the size??? From what hes been reading, since there are so many growing, that would cause the average size to be smaller??? He thinks that on the second flush there will be fewler mushrooms, but the average size will be bigger??? He doesn't think it is because of lack of water, because there is still condensation on the sides of the container.

Next question. The casing is starting to pull away from the sides. When this guy picks the first flush, how can he rehydrate the casing??? He plans on filling the gaps on all sides with freshly steralized casing mixture, and filling the holes left from picking also, making sure that all new substrated added is moist. But how to rehydrate more of the casing?? If the whole thing is misted wont it harm the hyphal knots that are already formed and and waiting to grow on the second flush??? Lots of these knots formed during pinning initiation, but only some turned into pins and grew into mushroom. Its his understanding, that the knots that are still there will make up the second flush, and misting my harm them. How is he to rehydrate???

Last question. Overnight the mushrooms all grew lots of white flufy mycelium around the base of the stems. It was all of a sudden and all at once. Is this normal? What would cause it?? Its not contaminated.

Sum up his setup... casing in a sterlite container, the whole container, that means no perlite or anything else. The lid of the container never comes off, he's had lots of problems with green mold, and this new way of airating them seems to stop it.

As soon as this guy gets a digital camera, I'll post some pics, but that wont be till late tonight or tommarow.

Please help this guy out! Thanks a lot!! Pics comming soon...

Thanks.

I think if there is a little more air exchange and the ambient lighting was blocked from the sides, the mushrooms would do a lot better.

Hopefully more to come.

These are my thoughts/impressions:

1) Awesome flush!!!

2) You ar ecorrect, an even flush will reduce the mean weight/size of your fruits. Your second flush should produce some larger fruits.

3) To rehydrate, spray along the cracks now, then fill w/ casing later. The water should be absorbed by the bottom casing material which wlll release the moisture into the substrate as needed. I usually try to pour any excess liquid from the casing container before filling in the sides.

4) Your understanding regarding the remaining hypha knots forming the second flush is correct.

5) The fluffy mycelium at the base of the fruits is a sign that your humidy is at the proper level. Sometimes this can indicate too hihg of humidity. An easy way I tell the difference is in how fine the mycelium apears. If it is soft and fluffy, all is OK. If it is more matted or stringy, your humidity is likely too high. Unless of course it is contamination, but that should be easy to tell.

6) Again, nice flush, truely textbook quality!

Joshua
