I think your friend's goals are incompatible. You can grow potent mushrooms (grain substrates) or large ones (chopped wheatstraw, compost). For cubes of an 'intimating' size, an EZ-to-prepare substrate is a mixture of 10 percent brown rice and 90 percent chopped/blenderized wheatstraw, loaded in a 250-500ml jar and topped off with a dry vermiculite contaminant barrier as usual Sterilize and inoculate by spores or slurry.
For cubes of max. size, harvest all mushrooms at th moment that their tops are reddish. All except 1 - that mushroom will grow monster size,especially if it is a Golden Teacher or B+ and summer time (temps in the high seventies to eighties F)

The question kind of assumes that the composition of most substrates are somehow limiting the size that mushrooms can achieve.I don't think that is really the case-more a combination of environment and genetics.

Although not nutrient related, www.thelittleguy.com claims that the orissa india strain produces "extremely large fruits." Perhaps you should do a grow log on these and let us know your results?

Im currently using rabbit food with creepers. I have pins right now and I plan on posting pics of the fruits when the first flush in done. I wanted to post pics of the case but I dropped the casing on the way to the computer and its all broken up and shit. But its still growing. The mycelium rips through that rabbit food. As far as fruit size we'll have to see.

The spawn mate seems to be basically protein. Why didn't anyone say that mushrooms need protein? I could come up with some wonderful proteins.
In order to create a vegetarian protein you need to combine a grain with a legume. If you mix chick pea flour with brown rice flour or brown rice, the mushroom will have the makings of a protein. If you use whole brown rice and green lentils or split peas, you have the makings of a protein. You can also combine a milk product with a grain to make a protein. I suggest you do an experiment with the added legumes and see if this works for you. Perhaps something so simple could revolutionize mushroom growing.

You are mixing up "Diet For A Small Planet" with "The Mushroom Cultivator" or something...
Mushrooms have very different nutrional requirements than humans.They don't seem to be limited by any essential amino acids or anything like that.Plenty grow perfectly well in nature on wood chips or straw-mostly cellulose.Protein sources are often added in cultivation to increase yield,but that in itself wouldn't make the individuals grow larger.
