What informs your Morality?
    #8900015 -

Or do you even subscribe to the idea of morality?  Personally, I believe in following one's conscience, for starters.  I believe the conscience is hardwired into our being, an it should never be ignored.

Is the conscience independant of upbringing? (Do you trust the origins of that voice that's telling you what to do?)

As based in simplest yoga-nirvana philosophy which states that the state of inner union is when the waves of the mind are stilled, I contemplate morality as that state of being which perpetuates quietude or inner stillness over inner turpitude and conflict. Thus to even sit in peace for an hour one needs the good karma to do so.  Obviously one can't be a gun toting gangster and sit in peace. It all seems fairly simple to me. Morality equals ability to emit peace, thus spreading that carrier wave.

I go by the Golden Rule. Before I do something questionable, I think about how I would fell if it was done to me. It makes things pretty simple.

I like to take this a step farther, and imagine what the world would be like if everyone copied my behavior.  Extending the consequences in this manner can expose hypocrisy and self-justification that might slip under the radar of the individual-level Golden Rule.

My question to myself: am I living as a citizen of the world I wish to inhabit?

Nice idea in theory, but the trouble is that everyone in the world doesn't follow this rule.  It seems pointless to subscribe to an arbitrary moral code when there are others who can gleefully take advantage of the system.

Personally, I believe in doing what I consider to be right.  Going against one's conscience is a sure-fire way to leave one plagued with guilt and remorse.  On the other hand, I also believe in doing what is required for when the time comes--there will always be an exception to a rule, and if I have to kill someone for whatever reason that I deem important, then I don't think I would have any qualms.

What is the alternative?  Shall we set our standards for our own behavior by the low standards of others?  What does their poor ethical decision-making ability have to do with my course of action?

No, it just shows that one can reap more benefits from playing the system than by subscribing to a do-unto-others-as-you-would-have-the-world-do-unto-you type morality.

I guess it depends whether the benefits outweigh the costs.  For me, whatever benefit I might obtain through acting in a manner which is incongruent with my values is far outweighed by the cost of knowing myself to be incongruent.  Since personal congruence is significant to me, "cheating" just doesn't benefit me in the end.

The only person I can't get away from is myself, so I had better be someone I like.

QFT.  But your previous statement implies that playing the system would go against a set of values--are these moral values the same as your "am I living as a citizen of the world I wish to inhabit", or are they are a more fundamental feeling of what's right and what's wrong?

Well, since the world I wish to inhabit is one in which my preferences are the "rules," there is no distinction between this set of values and my own sense of right/wrong.

I'm simply trying to understand how you originally arrived at your preferences--was it through coldly rational inspection or through the more typically emotional moral judgements?

Both, of course.   Most of my "moral" ideas are actually ethical considerations.  I don't discuss "right" and "wrong" actions, but rather preferable courses of behavior given foreseeable consequences and personal values.

An example:  I prefer to live in a world where people take responsibility for disposing of their refuse, rather than throwing it on the ground for someone else to deal with later.  The foreseeable consequence of everyone refusing to dispose of their trash is a disgusting mess.  My personal value system places a clean environment above a disgusting mess, and judges the cost of taking the time to dispose of trash properly as less than the benefit of maintaining a clean environment.

If I followed your proposed moral system, I might say "why should I pick up after myself when others can avoid the cost of time spent throwing their trash away? They are getting away with less work, leaving them more time for entertaining pursuits!  It's not fair!"
