about to case stalled jars.. a few questions
    #872615 - 09/09/02 01:53 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

well, my friends cat is about to case 2 BRF/Verm pint jars of his which are about 80% colonized, but they both stalled (probably due to his inexperience, it's his first try at cultiviation)

he was told to cut off all the substrate that the mycelium has not colonized (due to the high probability of contamination)... after that, he planson casing with just straight vermiclulite (because its his first time, and that there would be less of a risk of contamination).. think thats a good idea?

about how deep should each layer be? about 1"?

also, how should he sterilize the vermiculite? (without a PC)

1" will work fine.

Add enough water to the vermiculite so that it drips slightly when squeezed. Put all of this into a baking pan, cover well with foil, and bake at 200*F for 30 minutes. This has always worked for me.

Good luck!

Go for it bro, my first time the same thing happened. I did just that, cut away the part not colonized, cased in vermiculite... worked out beautiful!!  I mixed the appropriate amount of water and baked it covered good with foil at 350 for 30 min.
after which i checked water content and it was perfect ... just let it cool before removing foil to reduce evaporation...oh i used spring water!!

many ppl have said cut the uncolonised part off but is there a way to get that one small lil  stalled area to colonise. I tried puttin it on its side, turnin it upside down..upping the temp on the acq heater but it jus doesnt seem to budge.  Is there no hope and the ONLY solution is to cut it off???  My lil raw part is like 2/3rd down the jar...which should i do about the 1/3rd part..throw it or birth it as a short immature cake?

Thanks.. but should I cook at 200 or 350? ( i was thinking more around 300.. seeing how 200 isnt even above the boiling point of water)

Does cooking it have any bad effects? (by that I mean, does the verm sometimes burn, or something on those lines)
